I'm hardly a NASCAR fan but I'm inexplicably excited for the race tonight.. maybe I'm just a fan of Daytona.

Same here, except in Australia they only televise the main race.'Daytona 500'. They televise every round here but I only watch Daytona races, Talladega races and races at Lowes. I like those tracks.

You ever watched a Bristol race? Also Sonoma(Infenion) and Watkins Glen are very good.

Nope. When you rely on your parents, very little goes your way. So, no PS3. And welcome back, kart racer!

As for Jeff Gordon, he did a great job avoiding that crash. I'm okay with the new colors. I best remember the #24 for being that rainbow-colored DuPont Chevy when I got into being a racing fan back in 1998. The flame job was pretty new. But... it's ai-ight ("alright" in 'hood speak). Pole qualifying starts Sunday, then it's all about starting new seasons in the three premier series. Which even includes a little Valentine's Day racing for Nationwide. Sure to be some heartbreakers for that race (you knew a segway was coming!).

NASCAR's ready for '09... are you?

Oh yeah, I forgot to include the road courses. I like watching the road courses in NASCAR as well because Australia is all road courses. That's what aussies like.

I used to follow NASCAR a lot more when I was still in single digits as far as age was concerned (I was born in 1991, I must've taped every race from 1997-2000), probably because in Canada it was the motorsport most readily accesible. As I've grown older my taste has become far more 'European', in that I follow F1 and sports car racing almost relegiously and I usually don't give NASCAR much thought beyond that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these 'it's just rednecks going around in circles' idiots. I still love watching races at Talladega and Daytona, as well as the Bristol race (races?).

I've never seen them bounce around that much like that till tonight's race so I have no idea why they were acting like that. Could have been the no track testing rule that has messed everyone up.

That and Daytona usually gets bumpier every year.

Great race, a bunch of lead changes (23 between 14 drivers).

I really don't care for the new format (top 6 drivers from each manufacturer, +1 wildcard from each manufacturer), it takes away all the significance and importance of winning poles, all you get know is your picture against the Coors Light Board and bragging rights.

I questioned Tony Stewarts pit stop with 2 to go,but it worked for him,he stormed up to a 3rd place finish, after re-starting 14th. Impressive run Tony,of course the crash kind of helped too.It was a good shootout.

It's good to see an "independent" Sprint Cup team in the mix. What can I say but...Go Joe!

http://motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=318530

Through [his] NEMCO operation, he already had a fully equipped shop, requisite transporters and a staff of 10. Within no time, he acquired four Toyota Cars of Tomorrow from Bill Davis Racing and signed a quality engine deal. And due to the extensive layoffs among the NASCAR teams, he had some 300 employment inquiries soon after announcing his Sprint Cup plans.

Poor Joe he didn't make it. I was rooting for him and Jeff Gordon today. Congratulations to Jeff Gordon winning the 1st race of the Gatorade duel! Hope he has the same luck on Sunday!

JPM for the win on Sunday! He deserves to win at Daytona, especially after his world-class driving in the Rolex 24.

Go Ambrose, if he made it? I don't really follow NASCAR I just try and stay up to date on the ex-V8 Supercar Driver Marcos Ambrose. I watched the end of the Bud shootout, exciting finish.

Good for Jeff Gordon to win. Since this is a non-points event, he still now has some motivation and determination and focus that he can win almost any race this season. I believe in the psychology that winning a race (and this is going to sound obvious) makes you want to win more. The real challenge to NASCAR is... how do you race the Chase? Do you have some so-so runs just to try to stay in the Top 12, or do you have a lackluster (yet consistent) 26 races that by the time the Chase rolls around, you're basically rejuvenated and willing to go win a title?

Jeff Gordon's never won the Chase for the Cup while his teammate has done it three successive years. A fifth championship for the #24 sounds quite sweet, doesn't it? Go get 'em, Jeff Gordon! Also, go Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards!

Mark Martin needs a championship before he calls it quits. I am pulling for the veteran , although I am Penske fan.

As far as Hendrick cars # 24 and # 48 go no , no , no 👎 , sorry little E. , but you need to get away from Hendrick and start your own team. 👍

You know Jeff Gordon will be driven to win this year, he isn't at all happy with his performance last year and is even more disappointed about going winless.

I believe this is the best chance for Martin to win the title this year.

I didn't see all of the Camping World Truck race at Daytona, but man... TOUGH break for Ricky Carmichael(?). I saw he was up to seventh at one point until the big one (or a big one) happened.

Congratulations to the truck race winner. It's interesting the Nationwide series start on Valentine's Day. What other track says "heartbreaker" quite like Daytona (except for Bristol and Martinsville, I guess)? It's going to be a day of love for one team, and possible heart-break for the 42 others. Good luck to ALL NASCAR teams in all division of the sport!

NASCAR started today!? :( That means I missed the first one, unless I catch a replay early tomorrow or something lol

The Nationwide series ran today - Tony Stewart won , hope I did not spoil it for anybody who did not see it.

Sprint cup runs tomorow. 👍

So Tony Stewart goes in whining about the Goodyear tires... yet he won the race. I wasn't home because I went out with my parents. Congratulations to Smoke.

Do you know that he was "whining" about the tires on the Cup car which weighs more than the Nationwide cars do! Yes I do agree with Smoke on this issue Nascar needs to allow another tire maker again at least "Badyear" might start caring about what they are giving the drivers then.
Two years in a row they have had bad tires and Nascar and "Badyear" doesn't care. Are we going to see this issue all year just like last year I hope not. Go Smoke hope to see you with some Firestones/Michelins/BFGoodrichs/Hoosiers or any tire company thats not in Nascars pocket.

uuuuuh, don't forget that smoke was also a little upset at the fact that he is on his 2nd car at Daytona , and his teamate Ryan Newman is on his 3rd car at Daytona. If you were a car owner, this would bother you to.

If you can't watch the race and you aren't intending on sleeping tonight, you can see the live timings on nascar.com here (although I've never used it myself, but intend to when the race starts).

Lets all pull real hard for Mark Martin, this may be his last "real"shot at a Daytona 500 win. He has always been an example of what a professional racer should be.

Damn... I was hoping for a live stream like we had for the Lemans 24 hour race last year.

Kurt Busch leads at the half. Sadly, a tough break for Joey Lagano with that wicked whack he took. With the rain coming, the teams need to try to hustle as hard as they can to get high-enough positions.
