No, of course the game's automatic only... how are you even supposed to shift manually without an RPM gauge or any indicator when to shift up, and the physics aren't made to be used with a manual at all.

They made a compromise in trying to give us an automatic that behaves like a real automatic, and it does enable cruising a bit, but it's still just a compromise, probably the best we'll get in a NFS title.

I remember the cars in Burnout Paradise has infinite gears. You could hear gear changes even if you've reached and maintained top speed

Seriously though, in an action arcade racing game you don't need manual. Unless the racing is clear-cut (e.g. Ridge Racer, Outrun), there are enough things to keep you busy while driving (watching traffic, cops, switching mods, nitrous, etc). It boggles me when I see people asking for wheel support in an NFS game that's not Shift :boggled:

Listening to the engine is good enough. Often I'll come out of the corner and the car will get very bog down in the revs and acceleration would be compromised. At that point it would be useful to be able to shift down a gear so the exit from the corner is slicker.

^ Save nitrous before the corner, and use it all on exit. Arcade racing game is all about nitrous management.

And finding the best driving line (a good balance of collision risk and speed is the best). Coming from games like Gran Turismo I'm almost shocked by most people's driving online, leaving aside the arcade things, some people still seem to have no idea about driving (granted, the target group of a NFS includes kids, but from my own experience it looks like 80% of the random players online are such kids with no clue about corners... or even brakes :scared:).

Sure, it's still arcade and all, and you can still take each corner at 100mph when you go completely off the line, but it also slows you down a bit each time.

Yeah, the thing that I liked about Criterion's racing games is they have "believable" arcade physics. Proper braking and picking the right line to drift through can shave seconds off. On the easier wider corners you can just wall ride. But for races through downtown where you have constant 90 degree corners and the mountainous roads you can tell which players know a thing or two about sim racing theory.

The downside to sticking to a racing line is that traffic cars always seem to appear at the apex of blind corners   Most times I can avoid it fine, but it just feels so awkward to alter my line from the usual out-in-out, so I end up losing my rhythm and crash at the next corner

For those that still play this game on PS3, how is your console been acting up with the latest update/DLC? Still freezing after you leave in the middle or at the end of a speedlist?
I am planning to come back and finish the stuff on multiplayer but if the same issues remain, as much as it hurts me to do this I will sell the game.

Might fire it up and give it a go if my copy of FlatOut 2 doesn't arrive today. Haven't played it since January if I'm not mistaken. The constant performance and speedlist issues got pretty tiresome in the end. And the $35 worth of DLC just was a tad too much for me to consider it. Either way, hopefully some of it got fixed by now.

To be honest all the DLC that they released was worth it, great replay value there. The problem is that after every update a new problem came up, in the latest patch they tried to fix the concours freezing in a speedlist but it just got worse (haven't played for a while so I don't know if this was fixed or not), the last time I played I frooze 7 times in a row in a DLC event and every time I finished a speedlist my console would freeze in the loading screen.

Yesterday I decided to remove my savefile completely because it's just my single player progress that was wiped and I did completed everything before so I don't mind with that now. In multiplayer I still have a lot to do, if the game still freezes but rarely I will continue to play without changing my decision, if it doesn't well I know what I have to do plus I don't think that Criterion will release any more DLC or patches now that the Wii U version was released and they already fixed some of their issues.

I haven't play in like a month now. I'm craving some sim type racing but GT5 is boring as sin so I'm waiting for GRiD 2 which comes out in two weeks. It looks so so sweet.👍

As much as I'm looking forward to Grid 2, it won't be anything close to a sim. It'll be a nice tie-over for sure until pCARS or GT6 (maybe) releases later in the year (or next year).

I can't really tell whether or not your hating @Legend1; But either way, I am incredibly happy. They weren't really trying to get known for a "competitor" for the sim games, but it definitely imo is sim enough physics for me to take it seriously. I personally can NOT wait, and am looking forward to it. Can't really check right now, so if anyone could link me to a Grid 2 thread (there's gotta be one) that would be amazing. Also, @SpoilT; The customization looks epic, MP looks amazing, and in general people seem to be really pumped up for it. VERY OFF TOPIC, But, does anyone know if Universal Studios is considering doing another Driver game? It was the very first game I ever played and is by far my fav. game series ever, if anyone knows please let me know, thanks in advance.

GT games aren't real sims. They just don't capture any sense of speed. Shift 2 is more a sim than GT5 because when you do 200MPH in Shift 2 it feels like 200MPH. In GT5 200MPH feels like walking speed. I hope CM captures what Shift 2 did.

Play Driver: You're The Wheelman & Driver 2. (both PS1 games) Those were very very good. Driv3r was also pretty damn good.

I'm not hating. I loved Grid 1 and it looks like Grid 2 still has the same core gameplay but much improved, so I'm really looking forward to it. Unlike some people here who want every racing game to be a sim, I enjoy all kinds of racers from arcade, simcade and sim (though sims are the ones that keeps me hooked most). The most important thing is they're done well in their category. Codemasters has proven with Grid 1, Dirt and F1 games over they years that they got the balance between arcade and sim right. I'm certain that this will continue with Grid, and I'll enjoy it for what it is: the perfect simcade racer. When GT6 or pCARS drops however, that will be my main game.

Sense of speed is relative. And looking at a 2D screen without the fear of death will certainly make 200 mph feel slower than real life. Even in real life once you get used to 200 mph it'll feel slow. That's just how our brain works. GT doesn't exaggerate sense of speed, so you appreciate more how fast the really fast cars are. That's what I like about it. Drive a Fiat 500 around London at 60 km/h (normal city driving), then drive the F1 around the same track. Tell me you don't feel sense of speed.

NFS games feel like they have a better sense of speed because they overcompensate for that 2D and lacking fear factor with motion blur and camera shake. If that's what feels real to you then fine by me. Personally I like the clarity of GT's gameplay rather than the stylized pseudo-realism NFS Shift provides, even if it feels 'flatter'.

And for the record, I realize GT games are not full hardcore sims either when you look from the physics side. I'd say it's 80% realistic currently. But it's what feels the most 'right' to me relating to real life, so I will always be partial to it.

Getting so pumped for GT6 as well :D This year is getting better and better for virtual racers everywhere :D

It wasn't Universal, but Ubisoft released Driver: San Francisco a while back. I haven't played it alot but it is a fair amount of fun in it's own right, even if the story can be a bit bananas.
