Needing cockpit camera options in NFS games aren't usually a big deal in the franchise since very few of them ever had this feature. Even the most popular and praised NFS titles like Underground 1 and 2 never featured them so I don't understand how this would hold any longtime NFS fan back from buying Payback.
More options aren't needed because in the past more options wasn't available? I don't agree, nor understand that sentiment. More options only help more people, so it would be nice for those that actually prefer interior view. They're meticulous with exterior customization, so why not expand that to interior as well? It would only add so much more in that case.

Many games didn't have interior view back then. Back then was over a decade ago, and things like this are very much the norm in most any racing game based in reality. The the issue here is that you're associating one single issue people have as if its the only one. There are plenty of things in combination to be weary of since NFS2015 that are holding people back, this is just a tiny nudge in that regard.

As for the game, it's good to hear that people with similar opinions as mine are enjoying it. That bodes well for me at least, but I'd still wish there was some sort of demo without having to purchase the EA access stuff.

I fully intend to cancel my subscription once the trial is over! That way it feels like I've rented the game for 10 hours for £3.99 :) (I might have a play of some other stuff too)

I have a tendency to always forget the dates I should be canceling at

I'm not saying that more new options are a bad thing. In matter of fact they are a good thing. But not many Need for Speed games had them and most people that i've seen on reddit all seem fine with a NFS game not having a cockpit view option since its not a sim racer and instead a arcade racer. Cockpit option in arcade racers are optional but should be mandatory in racing sims like Forza and Gran Turismo. I wouldn't mind a cockpit option in Payback, heck Midnight Club LA, another arcade racer that has a cockpit option did great with it because it had really solid interior customization. But even if a NFS game doesn't have a cockpit view unless this is shift we're talking about, would you still hold back on the game?

I think what we should be worrying about Payback not having that seems to be a bigger issue than what we are right now discussing is the fact that there won't be free roam multiplayer since literally the last 2 NFS games Ghost made had it. I mean seriously? For the most part, NFS although it didn't started off as one, has been a open world racer and as the series are moving onto newer hardware, this should be in the game at launch but you're telling me Ghost that you couldn't add free roam multiplayer to Payback with the 2 years you spent on developing the game? Why? :indiff:

Yeah, and again, not having something in a completely different game should have no correlation for what can be added into a different game. Following that train of thought, Need For Speed also never used to have customization, so they should have just stood like that, right? Cockpit views do nothing with physics simulation, so it shouldn't matter if its sim or arcade.

No, they should be optional in any game. I don't understand how a viewing option somehow differentiates physics simulation, it doesn't make much sense to me. Going off that, we should just remove all performance upgrades and tuning options since you keep pushing that it's not a sim, but arcade. There are plenty of elements in the game that share that sim like qualities from other games, so why stop at a viewing option?

But even if a NFS game doesn't have a cockpit view unless this is shift we're talking about, would you still hold back on the game?
I didn't say I am. I quite clearly said its a combination of things that would hold me back, not this alone, that that I said the view is holding me back from purchasing the game anyways.

I think I'll worry about what I want to worry about. It's a quite simple option that would only serve to help everyone, it would do well to only bring more enjoyment, not take any away. That is a separate issue completely, so go on discussing that one, but the good news is that we can discuss more than one thing at a time.

That is an unfortunate design choice, if that happens to be true. Its a game based completely around an open world, and not being able to cruise with your friends is a major downfall.

You mean I can actually set up the ideal photoshoot without having to worry about random attacks from online players? Huzzzah!

LOL

Seriously, this change in multiplayer doesn't affect me in the least, but if that's your thing, it certainly sucks.

Speaking of NFS2015 What they should do is give you the option to be in the open world by yourself, rather than being forced into a game world with randoms. What they should have also done is not make the photomode use the active world, rather a stand still image so you don't have to worry about idiots. However, that's a separate issue. Either way, for how this game is focused, its extremely weird that they wouldn't allow you to cruise around with friends. Some people just like to play with people, and doesn't make any sense for it to be removed.

^^ They had the option to be in the open world by yourself in 2015. The asinine thing about it was you were forced to load up the normal multiplayer world first, then go into options, log out of that, and load a new single-player world. :irked:

There's a couple of Youtubers who collaborate on build videos a lot. This new limitation will definitely affect them.

Have been playing the trial for 5 hours or so today, and I can say that I'm pretty satisfied With what I've seen so far.

Minor non-story spoilers!

Starter cars:

S2000, GNX or golf GTi (Rabbit). Chose the S2k myself, as the other two aren't that Close to me. They are all pre-classed to race, so you can't choose what spesification they'll start With.

A bit further Down the line, you'll get to choose the off-road car. I can't for the life of me remember what the Third Choice was, but the others were a STi and a Land Rover Defender. Chose the defender.

Along these, you'll also get 2 derelict cars unlocked to find, after beating the two Leagues. A 240z and a Mustang. These are free to choose what spesification they'll fulfill. I went With a racing 240z, and a drag Mustang.

The world is decently complex, and size wise good. I'd put it in the same range as the 2015 map, mabye a bit bigger. The roads are varied, and there are more roads (abeit small, and dirt) than the map shows.

The physics are improved, without a doubt. You can still feel the 2015 physics as the base, but its much more predictable and fun than the predecessor.

The Graphics seemes like a bit downgraded, at least to me. I couldn't help but think that the cars looked better in NFS 2015. Don't get me wrong, it's still good looking.

It was also strange how low HP the drag cars start With. The Mustang was a slog until I at least started fitting Level 6 parts. The top speed is also incredibly low, but I Guess the cars are geared for 1/4 mile drags, and not an entire airstrip.

The Upgrades will be very familiar for anyone who dabbled With The Crew. Parts you win will be better the more tuned Your car is. I bought an R32, and raced it up. It's now over 200 "PI", and I grinded the graveyard shift race. Fun addition: when Your car bumps up a tier, the opponents race in cars more fit in that tier. The older muscle cars and hot rods was swapped ut With Caymans, BMWs and the likes.

To summarize:

I'd say that buying Payback is worth it, or at least get the trial though Origin Access. I can see a lot of hours invested in the game when it releases.

Personally I love EA Access, aside from the fact that the game trials have saved me money from games I'm not interested in, I get the new NHL games free less than a year after launch so that saves me money and I just Mass Effect Andromeda for free. Plus Battlefield 1/5/etc, FIFA, NFL, etc.

I saved over $120 this year from it lol and they also keep adding old games. Also UFC 2 so $200 actually... although if we go by prices at the time its free it's closer to $120.

I’m in 2 minds with payback. Can’t tell if it’s reslly decent or a bit average. Car handling will take some getting used to but it’s definitely better than 2015. Still feels a bit wonky mind. Graphics haven’t wowed me at all, very jagged edges and some frame drops here and there. It’s not stunning by any means, not awful but like I say it hasn’t wowed yet.

I've noticed in watching some Youtube videos that there are some jagged lines on shadow edges. Only noticed it on cars so far. I'm sure a lot of it depends on settings, and of course you don't always know what settings someone is using.

I guess it depends on how picky you are, but apart from the occasional shadow edge, I've seen nothing that makes me think the graphics are a downgrade from the previous version. In fact, it looks like a wholesale improvement.

Is there a derelict guide for the bel air, c10, and beetle yet? The only videos on YouTube I can find is gameplay for the mustang and 240z.

I highly doubt it. In the trial, you can only progress up to the first heist and at that point, only the 240Z and Mustang derelicts are available.

From what I've seen, you can get the latter two derelicts early if you know where they are.

But with that said, I wouldn't be surprised if they removed the other ones because you aren't supposed to know their placements yet.

Twice last night during races I went through traffic cars instead of hitting them, has anyone else had this happen? I'm also seeing the traffic stopping when I come across it before it re-appears in motion a few frames later further down the road. Very odd.

Beta's usually have minor issues still there before final polish. Even if saide quirks make the game they 'shouldn't' be there for long. At the end of the day the code for these games is astronomical and it will take a bit of finessing and complaint for all bugs to be spotted. As long as the game doesn't crash at every turn or become unplayable in other ways then we should be alright to give Ghost time to polish over the cracks.

Oh absolutely, I'm not complaining at all, I work in the games industry so I have a fair bit of tolerance for bugs in games! I would hope it's not a beta build at this late stage though, most likely a final build just without the day 1 patch fixes. 👍

Here's hoping. I'm no insider, just a happy go lucky gamer. As long as it don't brick itself I'm happy. In anycase if you're on PS4 I'll see you all on the otherside, polish and all :)

For a Frostbite 3 with 2 years behind it graphics wise Im a bit disappointed. I feel Rivals had more style. Granted Ive only been watching Youtube videos. I have it preordered and it will be one of the first games I play on the X so hopefully game play will be good. Does the game support HDR? Every racer that came out this year supports HDR.

Since the last post about my impressions, I defeated Legaue 73, restored the 240Z derelict, and did the first heist, after which the trial no longer lets you proceed.

Off-roading in this game is passable. It’s not terrible by any means, but it’s not remarkable either. My biggest problem with the off-roading is that the controller vibration goes completely dead while doing it, so it doesn’t even feel like you’re driving off road. I was a bit worried about what off-roading would be like with NFS physics, however, it’s excecuted well enough. I have as much control of the car as I do on tarmac.

Finding the derlicts and their parts isn’t too difficult. If you can solve a word search puzzle, then you shouldn’t have a problem locating them on the map with the clues the game gives you.

Now that I’ve played the game, I think I understand why they didn’t put cops in free roam. There are a lot of little things to do on the map like speed traps, drift and jump zones, etc. There’s also 100 of these poker chips to collect scattered all over the map but I have no idea what they do yet. It would be pretty annoying to have cops chasing you while going after this stuff, so I don’t mind the decision now. However, I have yet to see any bait crates. Anything done with the cops so far has been scripted.

All of this being said, I went ahead and pre-ordered the game now that I spent some time playing it. My number one concern about the physics has been put to rest and the other parts of the game seem well put together and polished compared to 2015. I was pretty harsh on Payback when it was first announced, but it seems to be turning out to be a decent NFS game. I just hope Ghost can keep up this momentum they’ve built up.

Anyway, since I can’t progress anymore, I’m just going to spend the rest of my trial time grinding for money.

I do like the side bets that Marcus gives. Pretty much makes earning money easier.

So now I finally managed to play Payback thanks to the trial version and here's my thoughts:

The first thing that comes to mind is the physics, did the physics improve? For me it's a big yes. They may have used the 2015 physics as a base but there are some improvements made for example the drifting. In 2015 it felt like it was drifting on rails but on Payback, you have more freedom now and its similar to Most Wanted 2012 in terms of drifting physics. As for the grip physics, they still need to do some tweaking but other than that, it's better than 2015. The off road physics are interesting to say the least, I decided to use the Impreza as a reference point for the off road physics since both MW2012 and Payback happen to have it and fair enough they took pointers from MW2012 in terms of off road physics.

For the customization, as expected that they carried it over from NFS2015 with some new parts added but still good enough. But I hope Ghost adds the tire width and rake options in the final version or a day one patch.

For the map, again huge improvement over 2015 with a lot of open roads this time around.

Cops. Yeah it feels scripted but aggressive. Maybe Ghost should consider adding free roam cops though.

As for the story, another revenge story. I don't mind it.

Overall, they really improved everything from 2015 and made it look like its as if 2015 was just a test to see if they can pull off a NFS with customization and they did it here on Payback. Kudos to Ghost.

Tbh, i am liking the MW2012 drifting though it would be better if the front wheel counter steers rather than going at the direction of the turn.

With only 45 minuets left of my trial, I decided to quit playing until the game officially releases. I have over $400,000 from grinding races and getting shipments, so I’m definitely going to be hitting the ground running.
