NEW Drawing Comp 4

Congrats again to VIPFreak!

The concept for this week is to design a production lightweight supercar for Lotus. This car would be relatively small, compareable in size and performance to a TVR Sagaris. Make sure it doesn't look bulky; lightweight sportscars are Lotus' trademark, one reason why the Esprit got clipped. I wouldn't recommend revisiting the Esprit looks, unless you can really pull off some magic. Lotus is really coming off today with a great style and it should be well represented in a coherent prototype for this comp. Entries due December 4.

Well, this is more of a W.I.P. since I'm not really happy with it and will probably just draw it over. What do you guys think?

Dark Skyline: Nice work, loving them wheels. Keep it up. 👍

It's pretty cool, a lot of Lotus references there, which is cool. I'd suggest making the hood vents less square. Making them round (like current Elises) will punch out a more aggressive, round nose.

I guess it's your style (you don't do anything else) but try to fill in some areas, right now all I've seen are basic line drawings, with that thick black border. Fill in the darker areas and give the car some tone, the drawing would look 100% better. The way you present them, they look completely unfinished.

Mine will be reincarnating the Lotus Europa from the 70s. Instead of just designing a Lotus supercar and naming it the Europa (what seems to be happening at Lotus right now), mine will actually be a modernized Europa, complete with the huge refrigerator on the back end. 👍

Thanks Vipfreak. About your drawing, I think that the front should flow a little more, instead of those gill like vents just shooting out of no where and no roof scoop. Other than that, its freakin amazing.

Hmm... ok, thanks for the info. The Europa actually does sound more interesting than my current design, it's kinda just a restyling. I guess that's another reason I don't like it. Or maybe I should try doing an Esprit on a diet. :D

The Europa sounds fantastic. Those breadvans don't get enough attention.

VIP-Pretty much everything Ansisk covered on. Before you draw in the wheels, give the rear one some negative camber. That positive camber really kills the flow. Am I the only to note the Sagaris vents in front of the front wheels? :D

Eh... I thought it was just more my signature "gills" (people call it that). :( I'm pretty much gonna ditch that drawing now... and do an Esprit on a diet. Thanks though, I'll keep it in mind. :D

Probably a good call for this one, VIPFreak. On the deletion of the vents, not the Esprit rebirth. :D

Here's an early study of my concept....
I don't like this one much at all. I want it to look more like a handbuilt car and less like an Elise with overnight parts from Japan. I just can't follow the flow. But I like the overall body massing.

It looks a little boring (sorry, can't think of another word at the moment) It also seems like the spokes of the rim isn't there or is it spinning really really fast?

my crappy two hour p/s render over a scan

ideation
no 6 was chosen

sketching out perspective (yeah its a bit off on the green house)

ill sketch out a rear view before the 4th 👍

Hardly crappy! That side vent is the crowning achievement of that design. Fits so well with the rest of the car, especially the shape of the nose. Looks cool!

The rendered view's angle is putting a kink in my neck. Interesting angle though. As for the design it's ok, a little sparce. It reminds me of like a Lotus version of an Aston Martin. Please lose the mirrors, other than that it's cool. :)

needs more extreme styling? thnx for the honest crit btw. i know a lot of ppl are too nice even when it comes to crits. i know its not personal at all and it only helps the competiton get better 👍 . at least we dont have nazi instructors tearing pages off the wall... :scared:

Well... I'm try to be as objective as possible. I'm giving the nessary or helpful comments, not trying to tell you what to do (I hope). I know what you mean about crits though, my Industrial design major got pretty brutal many times. Some were nessary but others out of line IMO. :grumpy: Anyway, I'd expect the same kind of comments to me from everyone else.

thanks for the comments everyone.
its fr to better compete with the sagaris, but not sure if the design language is "lotus" enough. i has elise cues in the back but fornt is a bit too soft. ill see if i cna whip upa new front end this weekend, got an essay to write by friday :grumpy:

I'd agree with making more interesting styling. The current lineup is pretty out-there. It could also be my personal taste, but I'm not liking the PS rendering. I'm just not feeling it.

I'll like to see how you do the back end, I had noticed you had pointed towards the Elise with those side sketches. The best lines of the Elise are right there, at the back. Good luck.

I might run up and get mine done right now.

Esperante: I'd suggest trying freeer (whoa three E's) lines, that intersect at soft angles. Try drawing more with your shoulder, and on a bigger paper if you need. A lot of car guys I know draw standing up. I, for one, can't stand it, but I do have a commanding sitting stance over the surface (pun intended on that one).

I'll keep that in mind. I typically get my arm into it when I do bigger drawings, but usually my sketches are just little doodles that depend on detail.

I did a few more, the latter two of whose design I want to continue.

I abandoned the mid-rear engine mounting, I felt the car kept getting shorter and looking like a modified Elise/Exige.
elegans20aq.jpg

I did a series of drawings and concluded a front-mid would be more optimal for the class and design of the car.

The finished product will likely be a cross between the latter two.

My biggest concern is that it looks a bit like a 612 Spaghetti. Of course, it would be much smaller, but I'm hoping some more definition of the nose would help.

hehe, yeah im having that prob too. the current lotus family look is hard to distinguish a new model from the elise and exige.

a sketch at school on *gulp* notebook paper! oh well it's all i had at that time......

Not as good as it could have been....went through many changes, but I have some new ideas

Esperante, you're rooflines and greenhouse shapes seem a bit un-modern, like something from the 80s or early 90s (or Noble cars). I'd suggest trying the current Elise "band" around the windscreen, and then have the rest sort of attached to that.

Check the real Elise, and VIP's also has it going on.
