Nice to meet you all, just sneaked my way into div2 bronze and hope many days of fun racing are ahead of me with some great racers :)

Missed this thread when I joined a couple of months ago. Better late than never.

My real name is Daniel (but Dan is fine too). I haven't been into racing sims for very long, although I remember spending many quarters a loooong time ago into an arcade game racing what looked like a formula 1 car at Fuji, if memory serves. So at my age (48 -- and a half!) I don't expect to be able to improve much, but I'll keep trying anyways!

Hey Dan. I'm of the older vintage myself (although you do have me by a few years). I also just jumped on this sim-racing fad earlier this year (in April) and thanks to the WRS I improved quite a bit. There is no better place to learn. And I still have a few loftier goals although I will concede that the alien/D1G tag will never be in my possession and for any hope of that I should have started 25 years ago

Even at our ages though I believe there is hope for big improvements. You might find that if you start to plateau a little with the offline time trials that mixing in some live online racing will help tremendously. I think both the offline and online together really improve all aspects of your driving and enjoyment of the game. The offline events really make you understand the proper line and perfect your approach to each corner and each track. The online events force you to think about risk, repetition and consistency. Running laps through a full tire cycle really helps you understand how to listen for and react to the feedback the car is giving you.

If you ever get the chance drop in on some of our 3D3 races (or even just practices) I think after a few weeks you will see the benefits in your offline time trial results.

I tell the reverse story to the guys in other online series I run. There is a ceiling on their skill/speed if they don't really understand how to find and execute the fastest lines around the track. Running online alone it's hard to find that since there are so many other variables to consider not to mention traffic, etc. I encourage them to join WRS and add offline time trials to the mix.

IMO, it's really the combination that seems to be the "magic potion" for rapid and consistent improvement.

(late) Welcome, Daniel. Had some nice battles with you already. 👍

Sounds like Pole Position you're describing. My favorite arcade racer was Race Drivin', spent way too much on that one. Favorite old-school PC racer was Stunts, with a pretty cool track creator. Ran it on a 12MHz 286 off of a new-school 3.5in floppy! :dunce:

Welcome everyone. I just qualified for the series as a D4 / Silver (not that great).

the Ring is not one of my better tracks but I dont mind at all the start from the bottom approach. It helps me level my skills out better little by little.

I look forward to playing now that I am able to in the GTP_ tagged races!

Welcome, ryanerb. I started out in Div4 Silver too, almost a year ago. Been improving slowly and steadily each week (only missed 3 or 4 GT5 WRS events so far).

OMG.... Pole position. That was my first "sim" now that you mention it. I always thought they got the tire model wrong.

I'd say we've come a long way since then.

Hey everyone. Name's Beau, guys online just call me Toy. Division4 Silver! No time to talk now, gotta get going on this weeks WRS!:sly:

Edit: While I'm in here, a couple questions: 1. Why can't I use the clutch on my G27 in these events? I'm guessing it's because using the clutch actually makes engine braking more realistic in the game, making it unfair to other WSR'ers without the ability to use a clutch. and 2. I saved my best lap replay, and when I go to view it, it says in the replay theater main screen that my best lap is a certain time, but when actually viewing the replay, the best lap shown is one that I ran almost a second slower than my fastest lap... why is that?

Hey Beau, welcome to the WRS 👍

The thing about the slower time in your replay, it's your previous fastest lap prior to the one you're watching, don't worry about it not matching. As for the clutch, I'm not sure, somebody else can answer that :dunce:

Yes, when looking at the best lap replay the "fastest lap" will show the best lap at the point you ran that lap which was prior to the lap being run -- your fastest lap. Confused yet? Anyway, you can see what the lap time is for the best lap replay by backing out to the replay menu and it'll give you the lap time with the name of the track/car/etc.

I got bit by this in my 2nd every WRS week and got my one and only red flag (in fact it was a black flag) because I submitted the displayed best lap time and not my actual time (which was faster)... so I'm sensitive about the subject :sly:

I'd say we've come a long way since then.

My first racing "sim" was Rad Racer on Nintendo...

Then I started doing Need for Speed on the PC (REALLY good for its time - the one that had the McLaren F1, I think it was the first or the second)

I feel old... lol... And yes I remember Pole Position too...

Ive been playing GT since GT1... I came online because nobody ever wants to play me in 2 player mode... lol, but I know I am not that great.

Another odd thing, I am a DS3 (specifically a Logitech Precision) user AND use the D-Pad... I have a DFGT wheel but my times on it in the year I have owned it are still slightly slower than the wheel... So I do flip flop between my controllers

Yes, I'm very very confused!:lol::confused:

So how do I get my fastest splits?

Nevermind! I think I've got it figured out... :D

Yep, that's the one, although the arcade version was a bit more colourful. There was a sit-down version of it, too -- cost 2 quarters instead of just one, IIRC. I remember quite well the female voice saying "Prepare to qualify" :nostalgic face:

Oh, and I have been thinking of participating in 3D3 races, slowly getting mentally prepared for it...

Same here, mostly for convenience, when setting up my wheel isn't possible. The wheel can take a ton of time to get dialed-in on, when you've been playing on the pad for 10+yrs, but one day it will just start clicking, and you'll never want to go back to the pad. A lot of that is actually due to the pedals, not so much the steering wheel, once you teach your feet to be better than your thumbs for throttle/brake. I'd recommend driving with 2 feet, one for brake, one for gas.

I understand. I was the same way earlier in May and didn't run any OMRS events... but once I got my feet wet I was all in pretty quick. Come join us for free run practice and get comfortable that way. You don't have to worry about contact or any of the formalities of racing and can just run laps and come and go whenever you want. Usually there is a NA practice scheduled on Monday evenings which starts early enough and goes late enough that it should work for just about any location in Canada. I'm on the west coast and Marc (Hydro) is on the east coast so we keep the room open for quite a while. You'll need to send a friend request to GTP_3D3Racing in order to join the lounge. I'll be away for the next few weeks, but hopefully some west coaster will step up to host the later practice sessions.

I'd recommend driving with 2 feet, one for brake, one for gas.

Am I the only single foot driver around here? I keep my other foot for the clutch which of course we can't use and I don't have a shifter anyway so it just sits there and waits patiently. I'm so used to driving a stick shift in real life my left foot is programmed for the clutch and not the brake. It's probably about time I start working on that... maybe a new years resolution along with dumping the driving line once and for all. :dunce:

I was a single foot driver with my DFGT until I started Rally Racing in GT5... I'm now onto my G27 and still have my left foot hovering over the brake pedal. I still manage to go for the clutch pedal and gear shift after going for a spirited drive in my IRL MR2... but that only lasts one or two wallbangs until I realize that I'm not in the real world anymore...

Hi everyone, Anastasis here. 15 years old, turning 16 this february, I love GT5, it's actually my first contact with the GT Series after GTPSP and some momemts in my friend's GT4.
I consider my self a good student in my neighbourhood's school. I accelerating with my right middle finger and brake with my lefty middle finger. Parents won't let me buy a wheel till summer(maybe earlier if a put a lot of pressure of them and some good marks will make the job too :sly:)

Go man go! Concentrate on learning tracks, and I expect you will become a potent force when that wheel finally arrives!! 👍

Two feet driver here. I just imagine I'm in a kart with gears. :)
All my real life cars have been stick shifts.

I'm fairly sure that Hyper-Dan is too.

Yeah, Dan drives with one foot and berates the rest of us for using 2. ;)

He liked driving with the clutch on Prologue, but I think his current wheel is a T500RS without the shifter, so not sure what his excuse is now. :P

I only use one foot. Ive been driving manual transmissios for 15 years in real life. I cant even think to use my left foot to brake.

Even with the contoller is brake or gas... i never mix.

Actually my favorite part of the wheel is the petals. It actually the wheel that kinda irritates me and makes me slower. I guess i like laying back in te recliner and driving with thumbs. I do see the benefits with the wheel but still end up slightly faster on a dpad

I'm new to WRS, just submitted my qualifier times yesterday. I know I'm not in the registry yet, but I figured I'd participate in the new week 45 event. I'm having trouble getting my splits though. I go into practice mode, A spec free run, do some laps, then go to save my replay. I hit "Save Ghost Replay", then I go back to the Replay Theater to watch. When I go to the Live Timing Monitor, it will only show my T1 split. It doesn't show T2 or T3. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

My latest ghost replay seems fine, so I guess nevermind :odd:

I got my qualifier results yesterday! woohoo! :dopey:
i thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself here!

My name is Mike, i noticed the WRS div1-2-3-4 or 5 in many sig without really knowing what it meant, until a couples week ago! :D

I already know a few of you because of the Nurburgring leaderboard thread, i did a little search to see what it was all about and i was impressed with the structure of the system, and how helpful and friendly everyone is.

Cant wait to participate! 👍

Welcome Mike - just stumbled across your video thread and admired the McLaren F1 lap. Very nicely done, as is your <1 qualifier

Another fast Canadian... oh boy! Hydro will be very excited.

Welcome Mike! Or should I call you Mr. Alien. 👍

And if you like online racing as much as hot lapping be sure not to miss our weekly WRS Online Events.

Thx WRP001!
Is hydro canadian too?

I rarely race online, im not used to the different physic, cars react so differently i would not perform very well :scared:, i will practice though and i will for sure join some events! 👍

Mike, I hope you are a Habs fan!! :D
Welcome to everyone!:)
