Word has it that Sidney Crosby will return tonight to take on the New York Islanders. Not sure how effective he'll be, but I do wish him well in his return to the ice.

Super Effective. Crosby got 4 points on the night... 2 goals and 2 assists and the Pens/MAF got the shut out. Awesome night for a comeback.

Huge shakeup coming to the conferences next year.

They are going to a 4 team conference system with two 8 team conferences replacing the West and two 7 team conferences replacing the East. Each team plays a home and away game with every team in the NHL and a bunch more within their conference.

Top 4 teams in each conference make the playoffs each year. You play within your own conference where fourth plays first and second plays third in the first round. Second round the 2 remaining teams in each conference play. 3rd round the winners of each conference are left and the two teams representing the old west conference play and the two east play. Fourth round is Stanley Cup Final.

This is the same format back from the 70s 80s and 90s in the old division format.

I'm pretty excited. Out on the west we rarely see East teams even if it's just on TV so now Crosby and Ovechkin twice a year :) Also you now get intense playoff rivalries because teams in the individual conferences play each other so often in the playoffs. Finally the NHL makes a decision that makes sense!

Cool. Is there a div mockup yet?

edit: Found it on their site. Anyway, why did they have to put the Cats in Div C? Sabres, Leaves, Sens, Habs, and Bruins? FUUUUUUU!

Haha yes. I don't mind the divisions too much. They kept all the rivalries somewhat together and I really hope some heated ones get started as a result of the playoff format.

I don't think the NHL sees the Panthers staying in Florida much longer. Either way though I think that preserving some of the big market rivalries was a higher priority than making the best possible conferences geographically.

Still can't believe Tomas 🤬 Kaberle is a Canadien. 2 assists in his first game, both on the PP. Spacek for Kaberle straight up, damn that's a good trade.

Why not? It's not so bad here. Not as bad as the Thrashers were.

The stadium is right next to Sawgrass Mills which is a huge tourist spot. Usually fills with Canadian snowbirds too.

Except you could get vouchers for 4 tickets if you went to hooters the day of the game. Not sure if you still can but just because a stadium is getting 75% full for games doesn't mean they sold anywhere near that many tickets.

With that said I think Phoenix should be the next to go. Should be moved to southern Ontario or Quebec City. They say they don't know if Quebec City could support a team but I think nearly any decent sized Canadian city could. I think it's more a problem with Montreal or Toronto losing some fans.

:grumpy:

This is even worse than having to watch him play for Boston.

Still think they should bring back the Hartford Whalers. I mean, seriously, Carolina Hurricanes? Really? Hurricanes? Was never a fan of that.

My first hockey game was Panthers vs. Whalers at Miami Arena. You know, when hockey didn't suck and you could still throw rats on the ice.

Hahaha.
And yes I entirely agree it should be the Hartford Whalers, PETA might have a problem with the Whalers part of the name though

You should see the reaction on the Canadiens forum, people were crying bloody murder because they thought Kaberle was over the hill. Get real, we got him for Jaroslav Spacek. Highway robbery.

How bout them Canucks???

I know :), 9 of the last 10. They finally woke up from the Stanley Cup hangover. By they of course I mean Luongo.

I can't believe people are upset about Spacek going. A bag of pucks may have been considered fair. It is amazing how Kaberle all of a sudden remembers how to play hockey again though.

I can't believe it still, Spacek for Kaberle straight up, no draft picks, no prospects, just one 37 year old pending UFA for Kaberle. Man, when Markov comes back, that is going to be killer. Kaberle and Markov, what a PP pairing.

Although I don't think people are upset about Spacek leaving, more just that they think Kaberle's contract is bad and that he's over the hill. His contract really isn't bad, and MTL can bury him in the last year if need be. To his credit, Spacek was a pleasant surprise this year, but he's 37, there's not much left in the tank, and to turn him into Tomas Kaberle is pretty amazing. I'll admit it'a weird though. I still see him as a leaf, when I see his face, I think of the leafs, and it's weird to see him in a Canadiens jersey.

THIS JUST IN...

...Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms. More info from Yahoo! Sports: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=AliSaKHUkEBOPK9sWtOt.vd7vLYF?slug=ap-penguins-crosby

I hope Sidney Crosby will shake off this injury.

Oh no way!

I really hope this isn't career ending. I don't play anymore because of concussions (8 total now) and it scares me too much to think something like this could happen to me. I had post concussion syndrome for a few months but I can't even imagine more than a year of concussion symptoms its brutal. No TV, no video games, no bright lights, no loud noise, no exercise... pretty much sit on the couch and don't move which must be awful for a professional athlete.

I mean my first concern is for his health of course, Post concussion syndrome sucks, I dealt with some of the symptoms for a few days after I got hit pretty hard by a kid sliding into my head when I was covering a puck (I'm a goalie, my D-man tripped a guy on a breakaway and he slid directly into my head at full speed when I was covering the puck). I saw stars then then had to avoid bright lights for a few days. It must suck to have those symptoms start again after 10 months of it.

Also, it sucks as a fan because he's amazing to watch.

What division are you playing in Noob?

Oh, I'm playing Midget local league (I'm 17, in my 3rd year of Midget). I just play for fun and to keep myself in some semblance of shape. I've been playing very well this year though, one bad game with 6 goals against (our team played pathetic that night), but otherwise I've been 1 or 2 goals against almost ever game. I play a bit like Tim Thomas or Dominik Hasek, it works well for me in LL but in any sort of competitive hockey? no.

But the game I was talking about in my last post was from last season (also Midget LL)

I play U16 AAA in Wenatchee, Washington.

Oh ok very cool both of you guys.

I'm done with hockey now. Too many concussions. I had my last competitive hockey one in my 3rd year of midget. We were top ranked team in the province in minor hockey but we choked and lost our last game to go to provincials. I got another concussion just playing beer league so I'm looking at coaching now. My name drop is Evander Kane who plays for the Jets, used to play against him in Bantam and Pee-wee (who came up with those names) and Noob your next big prospect in Montreal Brendan Gallagher I used to play against too.

Back on topic however, Sportsnet power rankings today has the Wild in first. I never thought I'd see the day. Finally their loyal fans actually have a reason to sell out that rink. Longest sellout streak in the league I think they have right now.

Gallagher had one heck of a preseason, really cool you played against him and Kane. As for the Wild, yeah, nice to see them doing well. Althpugh as far as sellout streaks go, I'm pretty sure Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Minnesota have all sold out every game since the lockout.

And Jacques Martin gets fired. Meh, long term it makes no difference but I hope they at least get the typical short term boost fom changing coaches.
