Quick rundown of the Playoff action as of now:

- Tampa Bay defeats Detroit in Game one, 3-2.
- St. Louis is scoreless against Chicago, who is also scoreless after the first. The Blues start the second on a brief Power Play.
- Pittsburgh is leading the Rangers 3-1 with a little over 13:00 left in the game.

Wow! Scoreless regulation turned into a lucky booknce shot off a defenseman's skate in OT. Both teams were rough, and gritty tonight.

The captian Backes got the biscuit in the basket at the end of the night.

STL. Wins by 1, and leads the series 1-0.

Four Series on tap to start tonight:

- On October 9, 2000, Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo made his NHL debut. 5,666 days later, he will make his post season debut against the New York Islanders.

Other series to start include Flyers @ Capitols, Sharks @ Kings, and the interforum match up in the first round, RedDragon and Northstar's Minnesota Wild vs. Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars.

All of the excitement of the NBA last night sort of diluted the start of the NHL playoffs last night. Yet still, it is playoff time in the NHL. I did see the Detroit at Tampa Bay game last night. There seemed to be a bit more fights than hockey. It was a very spirited match. If this keeps up, this is going to be one intense series.

Looks like time to drop the puck on some new series tonight. Good luck to all teams playing tonight.

Believe in the shield- the NHL shield. Before I talk about tonight's playoff games, it's time to take a look back at last night's games.

So about last night... this is a rundown of action from last night's playoff games:

* The better California team between San José and Los Angeles was the SJ Sharks, winning 4-3 in Los Angeles.

* If you love the color green, then two of the NHL's green teams competed last night. The GTPlanet forum rivalry series between Minnesota and Dallas started last night. It was Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars cruising to a 4-0 victory at home against the Minnesota Wild. The Wild had some key pieces out of that game including RedDragon's beloved Z. Parise.

* It was 5-4 in Sunrise, FL as the New York Islanders defeated the Florida Panthers.

* The Washington Capitals won at home 2-0 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Worse news for PHI is that Couturier is out with an upper body injury. It's going to be an uphill battle for PHI now to try to keep pace with the Capitals.

Tonight's games:

* DET Red Wings at TB Lightning (TB leads series 1-0)
* NYI Islanders at FLA Panthers (NYI leads series 1-0)
* CHI Blackhawks at STL Blues (STL leads series 1-0)
* NSH Predators at ANA Ducks

Enjoy some NHL Hockey tonight.

I know I predicted Lightning in 6, but damn... The Wings are playing so terrible right now that I'll be amazed if they even make to game 5.

Well to your credit, AnthonyD1993, you said the Red Wings would probably be ousted early should they make the playoffs. There's still some hope with the series shifting to Detroit this Sunday. Maybe some home cooking at The Joe will get the Red Wings re-energized. I will say that Detroit will need to turn things around quickly if they want to avoid being in a 0-3 hole after Game 3. And oh man... losing 5-2 in Game 2. Ouch...

Earlier tonight when I was watching all the Intermission stuff on NBCSN, I saw Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks roll into the Honda Center in a sweet car- a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG! Talk about riding in style!

Just wrapped up... Chicago defeats St. Louis 3-2 in St. Louis. That series is now 1-1. Game 3 is in Chicago.

Detroit and Tampa Bay have been playing like its the 1990s NHL. It's also a good example of what happens when NHL refs don't take control of a game. Abdelkader absolutely beat the hell out of Blunden, and Nesterov was trying to do the same thing to Richards. I have a feeling that all hell will break loose in game 3, and it'll be safe to assume that both players, if they don't get suspended, will be heavily targeted for the rest of the series.

I'm kind of torn about it. On one hand, it's classic playoff hockey with the fights and all out brawls, but on the other, most of the incidents in this series wouldn't have occurred if the refs would have taken control in the first game to begin with.

Should be heading to OT right now in Dallas but because some blind piece of 🤬 people in Toronto couldn't 🤬 make the right call to save their 🤬 life and the 🤬 refs were calling veey few Dallas penalties we aren't. Such a 🤬 call on the "goal" from behind the net, after a soccer kick, net off its moorings. 🤬 the refs, 🤬 the league, 🤬 the 🤬 NHL and the 🤬 Minnesota North Stars and Norm 🤬 Green.

To be honest, the rule is kicking the puck into the net is a no-no, not kicking the puck to the front of the net, which would have happened had it not take the funky bounce and in. Also the netminder didn't help his own case as he tried to lodge it against the crossbar, and dislodged the net in the process.

So in the end it was kicking the puck into the net. Also, he was lodged against the cross bar. The puck NEVER entered the net until it was all the way off the moorings which is always called a no goal. It doesn't matter that Dubs was the one who took it off the moorings. It never fully crossed the line and thus would have been called a goal under normal circumstances until the net was a good 6-12 inches back from where it should have been.
The league really messed up on that review and they need to make some changes because it's not the first time something like this has happened. It cost the Wild a playoff game

Here is what the Rulebook has to say on the subject:

NHL Rulebook: Rule 78.4
If an attacking player has the puck deflect into the net, off his skate or body, in any manner, the goal shall be allowed. The player who deflected the puck shall be credited with the goal.

NHL Rulebook: Rule 78.5
Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public Address Announcer for the following reasons:

(ii) When the puck has been kicked using a distinct kicking motion.
(Which as I said, you can kick a puck to the front of the net, just not into the net.)

NHL Rulebook: Rule 25.2
A goal will be awarded when an attacking player, in the act of shooting the puck into the goal (between the normal position of the posts and completely across the goal line), is prevented from scoring as a result of a defending player or goalkeeper displacing the goal post, either deliberately or accidentally.

As I said, Dubnyk really didn't help his case when he dislodged the net in the second period. This is why.

The Wild had every reason to be upset with that circus shot that was eventually called a goal. Heck, I'd be upset myself if I was on the Wild. I don't think that should have been a goal. The game probably should have been 1-1 with Overtime pending. Well, I do know this... Dallas is going to really hear it from the fans once the series goes from Dallas to St. Paul. Going to be some Midwestern hospitality served up- Minnesota style. So this series is going to go from the Lone Star State to the State of Hockey. But at this point, I think the Wild are going to have to step up to make sure this series doesn't go 3-0 in favor of Dallas after Game 3. The Wild can still win this, but the Stars are a tough out.

Elsewhere...

* It was the New York Rangers who evened up their playoff series with the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 4-2 victory in Pittsburgh.

* At the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., the Washington Capitals took care of the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1. This series is now 2-0 in favor of Washington.

Congratulations to the eventual winner of San Jose at Los Angeles (currently 2-0, SJ, 2nd Intermission).

I would be too had it gone the other way, but facts are facts. Dubnyk dislodged the net preventing the puck from being in the net, that is a goal under 25.2 of the NHL rules. The fact that it was on his back, and how it got there is really irrelevant.

So yes, there was a distinct kicking motion from whoever it was which you can clearly see in the replay and you so helpfully grabbed the rule which shows that it should have been disallowed due to that.

And you'll notice, if you look closely at Rule 25.2, that it says "in the act of shooting." That is the important part of that rule right there. It's what gave Haula an EN goal in the stadium series game when Kane hauled him down while shooting. Anyway, I think you'll agree that there is no act of shooting here. The only thing that could be an act of shooting was the player behind the bet trying to pass to their teammate who tried to kick it to their stick. From the pass there is nothing that could be considered shooting the puck and the pass would be negated by the kick. Anyway, the net was dislodged in the course of play due to the scramble in the crease after. The play should have been blown dead, the net replaced and a face off to the right of Devan Dubnyk, tied 0-0. There is nothing else that should have happened. End of story. The "goal" was a poor review, a total disaster. The people reviewing it should be stripped of position or fired and we can continue

As you said: facts are facts.

There was a distinct kicking motion by the Dallas player which directed the puck
The puck never crossed the line and entered the net before the net was completely off the moorings
The net was never dislodged during "an act of shooting" the puck and thus Rule 25.2 is not relevant to this. It was displaced during the mad scramble after anything even resembling an attempt to score took place.

The NHL has some explaining to do as to why they overturned the call on the ice. Regardless of whether it was legal or not in the end, it's going against so many of the precedents that we have seen in the league that either the entire NHL changes course and this becomes ice soccer or people in Toronto need to be gobe.

The last thing anyone wants to think after two games is a series being "over" once one team leads a series 2-0. If in Game 3 a team leads 3-0, it is serious panic. So trailing teams are going to need to step up to try to make a series out of it. Think about the Los Angeles Kings a few years ago- winning a series after being down 0-3 in the series. Still plenty of hockey left to be played. Don't give up on your team(s), because the teams themselves surely aren't going to back down or concede!

Having said that, good luck to all teams playing today and tonight.

The refs have been pretty bad across the board this playoff run. There have been a lot of bad calls/no calls and a whole lot of inconsistent calls as well. It really sucks because a lot of the serious incidents (notably the Tampa Bay/Detroit line brawl at the end of game 2) could have never happened if the refs had control of the games in the first place.

Only one game has gone final as of the time of this post. St. Louis leads their series against Chicago 2-1 after winning today's game 3-2. I read a penalty by Patrick Kane was a big difference maker in STL picking up the win. If St. Louis ends up winning the series, they'll get the winner of the DAL/MIN series. We may have another GTP inner-forum rivalry if that happens, either kolio (STL) vs. Sanji Himura (DAL) or kolio (STL) vs. RedDragon and Northstar (MIN). Again, that is IF St. Louis wins their series with Chicago.

Other games still in progress as of this post:

* TB at DET (2-0; DET; 14:00 left in 3rd Period) (TB leads series 2-0 currently)
* FLA at NYI (2-0, FLA; 15:27 left in 2nd Period) (series tied 1-1)
* SJ at LA (hasn't started yet; SJ leads series 2-0)

Congratulations to all winners from today and tonight.

Petr Mrazek gets a shutout in the Red Wings 2-0 victory over the Lightning. Series 2-1 Tampa after 3 games. Another fight broke out at the end of the game. Refs still were terrible (missed plenty of calls on both teams), but they at least had shown some control of the game tonight even with the attempted line brawl at the end of the game.

Expansion news: According to Complete Hockey News, the NHL in May is expected to award an expansion franchise to Las Vegas. No other franchises are expected to be rewarded at this time.

Also, Winnipeg may be some hot water with the league for inflating attendance, also according to Complete Hockey News.

Friggin offsides.
Yup.

*NHL Head Office*

"Hey guys scoring is way down, what should we do to make the game more exciting"

"How about video reviews done on bush league discount tablets so we can have more stoppages and disallow more goals"

GENIUS.

___________

Honestly I'm kinda curious about the idea of hockey without offsides and it seems a lot more reasonable than I first assumed. I honestly have a hard time coming up with a good reason for the rule, I know the idea is it prevents cherry picking but if you want to give the other team a 5v4 possession for free then more power to you.

Brooks Orpik just took a massive shot in the Flyers/Capitals game. He looked out of it after taking the hit. I have a feeling that he just got a concussion out of that and is done for the playoffs.

I don't even understand offside in [association] football. I barely understand offside in hockey. I do have a little idea of what qualifies as offside in hockey after seeing one review process. Just not sure about this deal here.

I wonder what the new Las Vegas team will be named, team colors, and stuff like that will be. I still think at least for a Western team, Seattle should get an expansion NHL team over Las Vegas.

No games final as of this post, but here's how all the action is shaping up as of the time of this post:

* WAS at PHI: (4-1, WAS; 7:43 left in 3rd Period) (WAS leads series 2-0)
* DAL at MIN: (2-1, DAL; 1st Intermission) (DAL leads series 2-0)
* LA at SJ: --- yet to be played --- (SJ leads series 2-0)

Congratulations to all winners once each game concludes on this Monday night.
