No used cars

Quick question: reusing models from one GT to another... good thing or bad thing? Or does it make much of a difference? I'm just wondering...
Can be done with GT games on the same platform, GT3 was all new cars obciousely, GT concept featured new model, and GT3 models, you'll notice many of the cars you race against arn't selectable, the reasion is all the selectable cars are re-modelled to a slightly higher standard if you watch an opponent in a reply that isn't a selectable car you can see a diffference in quality. Many of the selectable cars in GTC were the re0used in GT4, I look at GTC as a kind of test bed for things including their new modelling process. It can be a good thing, tbh I wouldn't have complained if GTC and GT4 featured GT3 quality cars but PD wanted to improve them, so they scrapped tham after GTC.

Regarding Tenacious D's comment, regarding upcomplexing of models, it can't be done. You can maximise the usefullenss of each polygon by clever modelling and good use of textures, but you can't make a polygon do the job or 2 polygons ext. However, theres a point where poly counts become less relevant, that count according to Eden studio's is around the 10k mark (Eden are the guy's making the new Test drive game). My poersonal opinion though is that the cars in test drive, don't look as good as the 80k+ poly cars in PGR3, but they don't look twice as bad either, they arn't half as detailed ect. I personally think that once you get up and over 15k polys the usefulness of each extra poly ontop of that is lowered, as long as you use each poly properly and don't waste a load like just adding an extra few hundered polys to the back side of the wheel just because you can, ect.

Ok back on used cars

I like them and think they have a position in GT5

But there should be an engine reconditioning feature. This would keep the people happy that hate horse power loss.

hi. a long time le mans fan here who discoverd gt only recently, so don't be too harsh on me if i shift the wrong gears.

re the used cars' engine power drop in gt4 - correct me if i'm wrong as most likely i'm missing something, but from my experience with the game so far i have not seen such a thing as 'engine wearing off' due to mileage - there's oil burning, which degrades engine performance, but it's a matter of an oil chanege and the engine is up to nominal again - and that's how it is both for used cards and much-driven new cars alike. so what am i missing?

btw, on the thread's topic - i haven't bought a single new car since i started the game, i've been driving only secon-hand ones and prizes (i'm on my second year now) - needess to say that i find the used cars an essential part of the game. several of the posters in this thread have already nicely worded the view i share on the matter - the used cars and the well-ballanced maintenace element make the game more than just a racing sim.

You are missing the fact that car's with higher milage, when given the oil change, the power doesn't go back upto what it did on a brand new model. It doesn't happen over 500miles or anything stupidly short like that though. You can see if you buy a used car that you can also buy/win brand new, if the used one has say, 50k miles on the clock, give it an oil change, then buy a new one and give that an oil change as well, the new car will have more power than the used car.

ok, but what is the approximate function by which an engine wears off with mileage? as i am looking at my all-used lancers collection here, and i can't see much correlation. for the record, here is that collection in a table - power is taken after the first oil chanege following acquisition, and the figures are taken from the specs sheet in the respective car's garage view.

Code:
model/HP/torq/mileage at purchase (km)
evo GSR / 246 / 227.26 / 65,380.0
evoII GSR / 262 / 227.26 / 66,068.3
evoII GSR / 262 / 227.26 / 77,921.1
evoIII GSR / 264 / 227.26 / 73,595.5
evoIII GSR / 264 / 227.26 / 72,039.1
evoIV GSR / 273 / 259.66 / 56,770.4
evoV GSR / 306 / 305.08 / 38,807.6
evoV GSR / 306 / 305.08 / 41,581.7
evoVI GSR / 311 / 304.29 / 45,311.5
evoVI RS TME / 312 / 301.54 / 33,233.4
evoVI GSR TME / 311 / 304.29 / 39,653.6
evoVI GSR TME / 311 / 304.29 / 43,634.2
evoVII GSR / 314 / 307.04 / 15,897.2
evoVII GSR / 314 / 307.04 / 16,107.8
evoVII RS / 314 / 307.04 / 36,105.7
evoVII RS / 314 / 307.04 / 16,767.7
evoVII GT-A / 312 / 288.59 / 28,527.2
evoVII GT-A / 312 / 288.59 / 17,481.6

all cars have practivally no extra mileage but the one at purchase.
note the last four lancers in the table showing quite some difference in the mileage but no devitations in the power characterstics

If you want an indepth answer it'd be a good idea to ask someone who's done more testing of things this, like Famine or Kent, they tend to really know thier stuff and to have done a lot of testing with GT4. What I know I've mainly got from reading tests from people like them, don't be afraid to drop any of them a PM. I could answer you but it'd probably only be half correct or less since I can't reemmber any specifics, I'd be basing a lot of it on guesstimates ;).

I think its stupid to suggest that either they cut older cars from GT5 or have manufacturers running 30 year old cars off the showroom floor.

I want more used cars. Lots and lots of used cars. I don't mind that they have less horsepower than a low-mileage or new car. I like used cars.

This was a dumb argument to begin with. I hate trying to bring life to a thread whose idea I totally disagree with, but would you still want to have the GT1 and GT2-style car shopping system for the older cars (manufacturers have their own Used Car lot)? Or do you like GT4's system better? How about a combination of GT1-2 and GT4, only that secondhand dealers still exist?

As long as it's totaly random and not on a set rotation that people can "hack" off of, then I'm fine with it... That way you don't ever know when a low miles car will come by, so you have to always keep a bit of cash on hand for those moments. And that way, all people in all areas get the same chances at the low miles cars, as every other region (i.e low miles Supra RZ). I'd like that they be sortable also so you can look at every kind of car, or simply the Hondas, the FR cars, or maybe even by contry. I've liked the used car lots more in previous games then in this one.

How about the dealers have their own used car lots, but for makes that no longer exist, like Plymouth, Triumph and others, there is a used car dealer?

I still think Used Cars don't need to go anywhere. We don't need another GT3 where all you have are newer cars (by the way, how the hell can you make the 1960s Mini Coopers Secret? What the hell? I actually liked the GT4 system since I don't really have manufacturer-specific car lots. I also thought it was a bit more fun looking through a pack of cars from different eras rather than a miscellaneous sort of cars in a manufacturer-specific lot.

I kind of want Used Cars of many kinds, but I'd also want it to be fun and full of surprises. You'll never know what you'll find! I think you win the Honda S800 road car by clearing the B-License with all-gold. But why go through the trouble when you can buy your own in the car lot even with a lot of mileage on it? One other thing... don't fret so much on high mileage cars in the game. You're going to be putting in even more miles on it regardless. It isn't like cars are going to fall apart in GT4 at some point. Hell, someone probably picked up a used car in GT4 with 65K miles to start with, then probably got the mileage up to 200K miles and not broken a sweat. Don't worry about it so much in GT4. Trust me.

^ I'd like to see a 'certified pre-owned' (in which, cars are no older than 2-3 yrs old) program on this GT1-GT2 style used car system while, cars that are significally older can go to a Car Max-style dealership on which just like in GT4 multiple brands in one place. And for classic and exotic cars they should belong to an upscale dealership (just like those exquisite dealerships in Beverly Hills). Just my two centabos. (:

Great ideas for used cars. 👍

There not just in Beverly Hills.... We have tons here in Marin, and SF.

Anyways, those dealers are not gonna want having alot of the older cars... Mostly just rare icons in motor history.
Ferrari, Old Benz's, Bugatti.. etc...

-> Right now we got 4 here in Las Vegas.

-> I think my idea will simplify this issues about used cars, and I really don't like what PD made on GT4 too much. (:

-> I think its an interesting topic, at least we can give some noobs their own opinion. And since that guy ClassicAnyCar's thread really bothers me until now. (:

 -> You said it dude!

-> I just like to see on how noobs react to this sort of topic since we got a stream of noobies lately. (:

I like having used cars in my Gran Turismo. I'd like to see more wear and tear. I want to see rust on a 64 Falcon 4 door. Whats not fun about racing a used Volvo station on Ice? Keep the used cars. When they took so many out in
GT3 I didn't bother playing it at all. Another thing is if damage is in GT5 I think that I should repair it when i want to not after a race neccesarily. If i'm not racing at 170mph why would I want to fix a dented bumper. I liked Sega GT because sometimes the cars would break down. You never knew when it would happen. It was entertaining for me. Just keep the used cars. I'll be happy.

It depends on what theme GT5 goes for as well. If you look at GT3 & 4, they both seemed to focus mainly on 'iconic' or 'historical' cars, and didn't have just any old clunker in there. Do you want an auto-alley used car setup where you can go and buy any old bucket, or do you limit it to 'collector's edition' cars? What used cars do people want? I'd be all for keeping the used car part of GT, but I do agree that it could be streamlined a bit better.

While the 'set car lists' in GT4's used car section didn't bother me, it would have been much nicer to see it randomised.

I have suggested it elsewhere, but I'd like to see a specific used car section for used race cars (like the black beauties in GT4) - retired race cars that are stripped of their livery (and hence black), for sale. I found it a bit odd that these four super exotic black race cars would appear in a used car lot along with povo pack daily drivers. You don't walk into your local used car lot and find an indy car for sale, now do you? Give them their own lot.

It would also depend on what PD are doing with damage modelling in GT5. If they have full damage modelling, would they have damaged or 'near write-off' cars that you can buy for a pittance and then do up? I don't really have an opinion on that, since I don't know what it would be like.

I think 'simple' maintenance has a place in GT. Hardcore gamers could probably handle the more complicated stuff, but GT's audience also includes kids and casual gamers who probably wouldn't handle it too well. It might be interesting to have it as a 'difficulty' setting, and maybe even have tutorials on how stuff works - based on real life. Imagine 'cam-timing 101' on GT. It's just a thought.

All in all, I don't think GT would quite be GT without used cars. GT3 was nice, and I loved the cars in it, but getting GT4 was just great for the extra range of cars available.

the used cars are verry good but they must putt more european cars in the list like bmw 850i or 740i & more americans like ford mondeo or ford escort:crazy:(more cars from gt2)

I would like it if you could buy these old amerikan muscle in the used car lot, and repair it, give it a nice colour, make it the way you want it.
Maybe a nice idea: give it some more modding possibilities, like you'll have in the used car lot a place for the used car parts(body, tuning, etcetera..) in the tuning cars section the new car parts(sparco seat, nice bumper, etcetera..)

Not to much need for speed, just a little;)

I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but the thing that got annoying with GT4 was buying used cars on given days. GT5 should let you buy many used cars in the same day, or no rotating schedule and just one huge used car lot. It was annoying getting all the cars in GT4 and having to wait for 233 days to pass just to get 1 or 2 cars

Perhaps it could be made more realistic by adding used cars on a weekly basis, but varying how long each car is available for. i.e. some baragins are sold out in a matter of days whilst other vehicles stay available for a month or more. This would not address your issue, but would be more realistic and interesting.

As for one huge used car lot, I'd have to disagree. The way it is now is annoying, but at least the cars are partially sorted by age. Better would be to sort the used car lots by type. i.e. Bargain Basics, Classics, Executive Saloon, Sports & Race. This would IMHO make it easier to find the type of car you are looking for.

I do agree that it shouldn't take all day to buy a used car - nor should it be possible to travel to, tune for and race a 24 hour endurance race in just one day.

kinda working on the posts above.........I like how it's done. Finding a used car with low milage gives you that same sense of feeling when you see an old old old car in good shape in some guys garage for sale.......a gem in the world of dirt.

However, I dislike having the low milage cars on a set schedule......I'd like to see ALL used cars show up with a 3 percent chance of low milage or something.........not just a specific model of car show up in a predetermined way...it'd be nice to "never know what you're going to find".
