North Korea, Sanctions, and Kim Jong-un

Can someone explain this to me please, if there is a good answer to this.

Why is everyone so reluctant to just get up and topple them? I know there would be a multitude of political hurdles to overcome, but surely it's always better to topple your enemy before they're strong enough to hurt you. China aren't going to go to war if the US or South Korea invaded.

Give them the chance to be able to launch nukes against you and you end up with a gridlock where no one will hurt anyone due to the fear of a nuclear war, then they'll be free to continue to violate countless human rights.

China treats North Korea as an extension of itself. If anyone invaded them, they would treat it as an act of war.

On top of that, toppling them and not making sure everything is wiped out would allow them to send a counter-strike. The counter-strike would then effectively just cause their war plans to accelerate.

At what point do North Korea become more trouble than they're worth to China? I feel like we are way past that point. North Korea needs China to survive, as their nuclear ambitions have driven them into famine, but do China really need North Korea constantly agitating South Korea and the US?

I am not worried about the US or the South not being able to wipe their defenses clean off the map, this is Cold War technology against state of the art tech. It would all be over within a week or 2.

...I'm more of the opinion that China is keeping NK in its pocket for the unhindered development of nuclear weapons technology.

Dunno if China has signed that atomic pact or not, but even if they didn't it'd still cause a bit of tension when they proactively test nukes. But by letting NK do it, no one's going to stop the tests from going forward. And if Xi Jinping wants to.... oh, I dunno, nuke Taiwan or something, then all they have to do is get the already piping-hot warheads from the NK goons.

Of course, I could be talking out of my arse here.

Surely they would be helping out a lot more than they are if that were the case. NKs nukes aren't too far off the yield of the 1945 bombs and they can't even get them off the ground yet. They'd be a lot further ahead of where they are now if they were just a loophole for China to stockpile warheads.

...They allegedly are already doing that. Rumors say China has been supplying NK with oil, munition, high tech equipment, the works, for years regardless of U.N. led sanctions or not.

And besides, it isn't just about the atomic yield, but the delivery system that matters, I think. Not many countries possess tech to build & launch ICBMs and if all the saber rattling's to be believed, then NK is very close to joining the elite.

You could say that about many places around the globe.
You could say that about many places in Fife.

My thesis is that China are quite happy with North Korea the way it is - a lawless little rogue state that poses no threat to China, but is a thorn in the side of the US and most (if not all) of their regional allies who are also major rivals of China.

China likes to be seen to be towing the line diplomatically when it comes to giving North Korea a telling off every now and then, but it continues to support the country by trading with it and supplying essential materials, without which NK would grind to a halt. If NK fell, China would be no better off and probably at a strategic disadvantage compared to the status quo. I reckon that China are probably quite happy with North Korea giving the US a headache in the region.

Yeah but a pitbull can actually hurt something..

...And NK hasn't? :odd:

Yes, yes, I know what you're trying to imply. I'm just slightly bothered by the certain.... shall I say blase attitude towards NK leadership exhibited by the denizens of The Interwebz nowadays. Regardless of how dangerous they actually are, it is still a fact that millions of NK citizens are under the rule of a horrendous regime that most likely don't give a damn about them.

Reffering mostly to the point of them attacking another nation. Anything coming out of NK on a rocket is going to come right back down.

Yes domestic issues wise it's pretty bad, although that's not what I was eluding to.

...I know. I was just venting out a bit. Sorry.

For the record, back in the late sixties, North Korea sent commandos across the border to assassinate the then-president of SK. It failed though...

Give me one country that has less human rights than NK.

North Korea isn't even in the top 10 of countries with a poor human rights record. Virtually every country in North East Africa and almost every country on the med between Turkey and Morroco for starters.

Going which direction? France finally achieved infamy?

In terms of :censored:iest places to live, IS-controlled Iraq and Syria, Pakistan and Somalia would definitely be up there. But I think no country exacts as much control over its people and gives as few freedoms as North Korea.

New sanctions!

North Korea isn't allowed to export copper, nickel or zinc anymore, and the export of coal will have to be reduced to a maximum of 400 million dollars worth. A reduction of 60%.

And the UN added 11 government officials to the black list for travellers.

Take that.

We have 30+ year old ships and subs. We have 20+ year old aircraft. And god knows how old our nukes are. From what my dad told me after talking to his Air Force buddies, they still have the same nukes in the silos at the Air Base has was at 40+ years ago!
New state of the art tech? Far from it. Ahead of other countries? Maybe.

Yeah, Obama really did help our military...

Um if the tech is 20 to 30 years out of date it seems a bit on to level that against the guy that's only been in the White House for 8 years?

Do his predecessors not also bear that blame as well?
