North Korea, Sanctions, and Kim Jong-un

Um if the tech is 20 to 30 years out of date it seems a bit on to level that against the guy that's only been in the White House for 8 years?

Do his predecessors not also bear that blame as well?
When he came to power the tech was only 12 to 22 years out of date. That's bad enough, but Obama only let it get worse. No he does not deserve all the blame here. But he does more than his predecessors.

-Clinton had just gotten us out of war. He brought a good portion of our machines back and put them in the garage.
-Bush was trying to upgrade the existing machines we had with modern technology after 9/11.
-Obama comes around and retires a good portion of machines that could have been retro fitted with modern technology like Bush was trying to do.
Then cancels a deal with Lockheed Martin to produce new planes(off topic: Lockheed Martin had a factory down here also, guess what happened after the lost contract...more jobs lost thanks to Obama) We can go on about Obama giving our weapons to our enemies and cutting our troops drastically, but that would really take this off topic.
Now don't get me wrong. Obama has done some good in advancement of war tech. Cyber warfare and Drones are a perfect example.
Bush could have replaced a lot of our stuff too, but the time of war is not the time to start producing war machines. Since Obama has "gotten us out of war", right now would be a perfect time to rebuild, not retire and give everything else away.
What are we going to do when the war hits the ground on our land? We have less to work with machines and troops and Military Bases. They shut a few bases down, here. One has been bought and is being turned into a Movie Studio owned by Tyler Perry. A lot of good that is goin to do us.
Even though NK stuff is out of date, they are not stopping production. You can die from a gun regardless of its age. But Ships, Subs and Tanks need modern radar and weapon systems to survive.

I have to say, I hate how y'all like to find that one line to criticize, instead of reading the point...
I probably should leave them out, but I'm entitled to my opinion right?
-----------------------------------------------
Now I need to vent. A lot of people who have not been affected by Obama see him as the best President ever. I don't. I have sat here and watched this state fall apart since that man became President. I voted for him, I drank the kool-aid, now lets see what the next man can do...

I would have point out the exact same thing had you picked any President since the end of the cold war.

Given that military investment has declined in pretty much every Western power since then it's an argument that can be leveled at them all.

I simply find the partisan targeting of single individuals for doing little different to many predecessors as odd personally.

You are of course free to do so, just as I am to highlight it and offer the opinion that I find it strange.

We have 30+ year old ships and subs. We have 20+ year old aircraft. And god knows how old our nukes are. From what my dad told me after talking to his Air Force buddies, they still have the same nukes in the silos at the Air Base has was at 40+ years ago!
New state of the art tech? Far from it. Ahead of other countries? Maybe.
-----------------------------------
Yeah, Obama really did help our military...
Sure you have many things that are old in the arsenal but America is still significantly ahead of every country as a whole in military technology when it comes to Land, Sea and Air, it's not even close, other countries just don't have the military budgets to keep up with what America has had for decades, and given there are no real international wars the need for high percentage GDP spending on Military isn't really on anyones agenda today.

When you have ICBMS that can be launched from anywhere in the world to hit anywhere in the world, you kind of hit the limit of development in that area, Gun technology is something as well that explains my point, there have been minor advancements in that area for 50 or so years anywhere in the world, but infantry has it's limits in todays world and the training aspect is more important then the weapon they use to shoot.

Same with Aircraft, stealth technology has been already been penetrated before the cold war ended and really is beyond redundant when you have satellites that can do the spy job much easier with no risk.

Cyber warfare, Drones etc is where it's all going these days, as it removes the congressional approval process for offensives on other countries.

Yeah, Obama really did help our military...
I'm sure Obama had bigger problems than overhauling old military equipment with no new wars on the horizon, and a budget and arsenal that dwarfs any other in the world already. But let's not turn this into another 'Thanks, Obama!' moment, please.

Certainly well beyond anything North Korea has anyway.

Interesting video from Asian Boss on YouTube, interviews with defectors, providing some insight that at least I didn't know about before, as well as their opinion on what's going on now.

I really wonder how much of the North Korean population really understand how backward their country is compared to everywhere else in the world.

I would assume the Older Pre Korean war Generation are the ones the Government fears most.

Happy new year of JUCHE 106 for our great leader of the best country on planet earth KIM JONG UN and eternal god KIM IL SUNG and KIM JONG IL!!!!

Welcome to the age of Facebook diplomacy.

...Wait a minute, did Baby Kim just comment on The Donald's tweet?! We NEED to see the screen shot pronto!!

Most likely a fake/troll account with that name and his avatar.

...I know that already. However, consider this scenario: even if it was not a fake account, many people will believe it is. That's the beautiful irony of this whole thing. No matter what the account holder says, people will always say it's fake. And I just find that extremely humorous.

I'm more concerned about Trump's declaration that North Korea's plans for a long-range nuclear missile will not happen. What, exactly, does he mean by that? Does he mean that North Korea will not be able to develop said missile because they lack the engineering knowledge to build anything more than a really expensive javelin? Or does he mean that they won't be able to do it because he will stop them once and for all?

I believe it said:

"LOL ok."

Well, if someone is going to start a nuclear war, it would be Trump. Don't worry though, the mushroom clouds "are going to be beautiful!"

The Kim's faimliy has a long history of claiming it worked and failed afterwards for years.

It doesnt mean the US should quit observing the nuclear progress altogether, especially since the NK always send threats to destroy the USA. Its just keep it on low priority.

Interesting graphic in that article that shows how much longer Kim Jong-Un's Taepodong is getting - quite impressive, but size isn't everything - it's what you do with it that counts... that said, I can see why South Korea are considering "chopping the head off the snake" - I think China would react very badly to such a move, but then again, North Korea is a bizarre cult-like state where the supreme leader is venerated (and behaves) like a God, and if he was bumped off before he can produce any Kim Jong little-uns, then maybe the Kim's reign of terror in DPRK would be over.

The article says the unit wouldn't be activated unless in the event of war. By then it may be moot if the US gets him first.

"Bumping off" foreign leaders preemptively may seem attractive, but that carries its own fatal risks.

I think China would react very badly to such a move
China has lost patience with the North in the past. Whereas previously they have voted against UN resolutions, they have recently abstained from voting. I know that sounds complete benign, but Beijing is sending a pretty clear message. If North Korea were to do something stupid with a nuclear weapon, China would suffer, even if only indirectly; the fallout cloud would likely cover eastern China.

Their attitude seems to be one where they offer a carrot while the West wields the stick - when the West imposes sanctions, North Korea runs to China for a shoulder to cry on, and China uses that to get Pyongyang to see sense.

What will happen when the 'gifting politics' becomes too large to sustain? It grows by leaps and bounds and at some point a gold plated shotgun simply won't be enough.

Presumably rabbit meat is also very cheap there as they're so damned easy to catch.

...Rabbits? Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that. A little known fact is that rabbit meat is actually too "lean" to subsisted on for more than a week. True fact. {nods sagely, apparently failing to notice the meaning of the post he just quoted}

There is an old joke amongst poker players of old and you can ask anyone, even me as I'm an avid hunter; can you eat a quale a day for a year? lmao

it can't be done because it's simply too rich

Well, we now know that Donald J. Trump has an international incident on his hands the first day on the job if Austrailia's news service is to be believed. NK has threatened a launch on DC during the inauguration. The missiles themselves are approx. 15m in length, making them shorter than any rocket that the isolated nation has ever attempted to launch, according to news reports. The same news reports have said that two of those missiles have been placed on mobile launchers.

The move could be an attempt by the North to humiliate Donald Trump, who is due to take office at Noon on Friday.

Military experts predicted that any test would only involve a missile with a range of under 2500km, less than half the usual ICBM range of 5500km.

US-based monitoring project 38North said evidence suggested Pyongyang may also be preparing to resume operations at a plutonium production reactor at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center 90km north of the capital.

“Stepped-up activities throughout the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center indicate that it is operating at a level somewhat above what has been observed during the past five years,” the report said.

“The exact implications of that activity remain unclear except to reaffirm that the Yongbyon facility remains the centre of North Korea’s nuclear program.”

Plutonium from the Yongbyon reactor is believed to have been used in North Korea’s nuclear weapons tests, according to a US government report.

Traditional nuclear weapons use plutonium (or uranium) as their main fuel. The “Fat Man” bomb the US dropped on Nagasaki used 14 pounds of plutonium, producing a blast equivalent to about 21,000 tonnes of TNT.

The threat comes after it was revealed Kim Jong Un’s military will have nuclear warheads capable of striking US territory within a year.

Since taking power the North Korean dictator has dramatically increased his country’s nuclear weapons program.

According to 38North, his Musudan missiles — with a range of 5600km — will be ready within a year.

The US has announced it will deploy its state-of-the-art THAAD advanced missile defence system in South Korea in eight to 10 months to combat the threat from the North.

The rogue state caused international uproar after it conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and fifth in September in defiance of furious international reaction and stiff sanctions.

The North’s hard-line message comes as a new US administration to be led by Trump will take office on Friday.

Since Donald Trump wants America to be allies with Russia, do any of you think Putin will step in and threaten North Korea if they attempt to provoke us again?

Russia hasn't directly concerned itself with North Korea for years. It might vote on security council resolutions, but its attention has been elsewhere.
