They finally did it. As expected, North Korea launched their missiles. All three of them landed in the Sea of Japan, without causing any damage. Here's a good article with a map: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=nation_world&id=4333663

North Korea is like a big baby, whom other responsible nations have to babysit. If I were North Korea, I would be embarrassed about that.

from the article
The missiles all landed hundreds of miles away from Japan and there were no reports the missiles caused damage within Japanese territory, Abe(JPN Foreign Minister) said.

He said the first missile was launched at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, or about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday EDT. The two others were launched at bout 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., he said.

If the timing is correct, the North Korean missiles were launched within minutes of Tuesday's liftoff of Discovery, which blasted into orbit from Cape Canaveral in the first U.S. space shuttle launch in a year.
They are such amusing people.

I wouldn't call them amusing. They're more along the line of "out of their frickin' minds." Threatening the last remaining superpower with nuclear weapons is not something sane people do. I don't think North Korea's leaders understand what they could be getting themselves, and the world, into.

Looks like they fired at least two more after that, bringing the total to 5 or 6.

Not good. We’re not talking about France or Japan or China here – Kim Jong-il is absolutely nuts and incredibly dangerous. And I don’t fancy living within striking distance of him.

The ICBM he fired seems to have broken up within two minutes of its liftoff....wonder how that happened ??

Yeah well the way things are looking, if the UN can't convince that crazy son of a bitch to stop firing his crap, the only place NOT within striking distance would be the moon... I say we fire on him first before he even knows about it. Just like, BOOM gone.

They have nothing to lose. They're desperate. If Kim Jong saw North Korea and himself become completely destroyed by a US nuclear assault, he wouldn't think twice. He'd still starve his people, threaten everyone with nukes, etc etc.

Easier said than done. The person who succeeds him may be even crazier than himself.

The boost phase of an ICBM is five minutes long, and the bird below will knock them down in that time.

EDIT: Looks like we were prepared for this; we were on alert.

COLORADO SPRINGS AIR FORCE INSTALLATION ON HEIGHTENED ALERT
Four Installations Across The Country Are Affected By Order From U.S. Space Command
by Baaron Pittenger

6/29/2006

An Air Force installation in Colorado Springs and one near Denver are operating with heightened security.

The Cheyenne Mountain Air Station, which houses NORAD, is now at "Bravo-Plus".

There are five levels of alert: normal, Alpha (low), Bravo (medium), Charlie (high) and Delta (critical). “Bravo-Plus” is slightly higher than a medium threat level.

The Cheyenne Mountain Air Station And Buckley Air Force Base are among four installations in the country at the higher alert level ordered last week by then- Acting-Commander of Air Force Space Command, General Fred Klotz.

Space Command would not comment on the reason for the security increase.

The order also affects Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and Patrick air force base in Florida.

Yeah I know, sucks. Too bad someone in his close personal company doesn't just either a)realize what he is doing or b) do something to cripple him....

I live near Wright-Patterson Air-Force base (south-west ohio)

I wonder if all of this has effected them at all in someway...

I called them amusing, because it looks like they timed their launch to the Space Shuttles'. I agree that North Korean leadership's pretty nuts. I've heard their comment on the U.S. before, it was along lines of how they were going to burn U.S. with hellfire. When I was hearing this, it reminded me on Klingons for some reason.

They fired more missiles!?

Are you suggesting that U.S. shot it down, possibly with missile-shield? If that's the case...... Yessssssssssssssss! But U.S. gotta be careful. IMO, North Korea is nothing but a China's puppet. With the Taiwan Strait Conflict coming up, they could be testing the missile shield's capabilities.

After hearing this and reading about all of this... I am really starting to get concerned that some World War III could happen in the future now. Since those nuclear missles landed in the sea of Japan, I hope the US will try to do something about this problem. I think Japan is too important for the US to simply let them be destroyed DEFENESLESS!!! :scared:

North Koreans are just testing the missiles, so there weren't any warheads in them. Of course, it still is far from OK.

According to the news here, 1 of the missles malfunctioned and blew up in the sky.

As for the ones that hit near Japan, my thought is if they did do any damage, the Koreans would be looking at some pissed off Japanese folks
.

I wonder how close it was! :scared: I wouldn't worry about the Japanese military. After learning from their mistakes in WWII, they are not looking to solve issues with violence.

True, but what other choice is there? The Koreans already seemed to have made it clear, they'll act good during the peaceful meeting, but afterwords, they'll say, "Screw 'em!"

It's still all bluff and blunder. Kim Jong Il is acting exactly like a Korean Kruschev... all fire and brimstone... but he knows he's talking from a position of weakness. The nukes are little more than a political/economic poker chip to him... though one shudders at the thought of him actually thinking of using them.

Somebody ought to clue him in that we don't play politics that way anymore. Heck, he should take a cue from the Chinese... "if you can't beat them..." :sly:

Yeah it does. Basically it tracks the missile from launch then lasers it to bits. AFAIK it was still experimental, but who knows what goes on in the USAF.

I'm not sure about the timeline, but it seems that North Koreans launched one more missile, making the total 7. I guess that Russians are reporting 10.

Yeah, the black dome in the very front nose of the ABL YAL-1A jet is where the laser shoots out from. The jet, an old converted 747, but there are 777s, is one big flying chemical laser, as seen here in this pic...

They started working on the ABL (Airborne Laser) program 10 years ago. Tests around August of 2005, September of 2004 were very successful, as were tests in August of 2001. Click this link, ABL News for a more accurate time line.

Actually, the ABL program was started after the Airborne Laser Laboratory program from the '80s. An awesome '80s movie called Real Genius dealt on this program a bit.

A lot of companies, and a lot of countries are working on this program. Boeing has the biggest foot in the door so far.

Here are several great links to start with. Try Wikipedia, too.

Maybe they just wnated to give the US a really big Independence Day fireworks show.

I'm surprised we haven't used force against the North Koreans yet.

An attack on North Korea is more justifiable then any claims against Iran or Iraq with the knowledge we know of them thus far.

The world...like the Chinese and south koreans and Japan etc. needs to Unite against them first with crushing sanctions then with force if needed.
The US shoud not...actually can not ...take action alone ..because the price will be paid by japan and South Korea .

Its time for CHINA to earn their Wallmart money and curb their dog .

If not lets see how Americans feel about boycotting Wallmart until they do .

The justification for an attack (based on treaty violations etc.) is less for NK than it was for Iraq. You're right that it's more justified than Iran.

In terms of treaties broken, all three have a nasty record. But we gave Iraq a lot longer to comply than we have so far with the others. That doesn't mean that with the others the need to correct the situation isn't more urgent, but it's also more dangerous.

If/when we use force against NK and Iran, expect it to be in the form of a precision attack. No prior warning, no ground troops, no US soldiers conducting damage repairs. It'll be over before it's begun and there will be smoldering wreckage where there used to be treaty offending facilities.

North Korea is not signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran is. Iran developing nuclear weapons is a breach of NPT, North Korea developing nuclear weapons is not.

Of course we don't know for certain that they're up to that... we just have a whole bunch of circumstantial evidence.

Good luck with that. Even towns that fight getting a Wal*Mart end up shopping there once it opens.

After watching a good days worth of the news, it just gets scarier and scarier. The US State Department is livid, and with the UN toiling over the proposals in the Security Council, it is all up in the air.

Granted, I want to see action taken, but it is probably the dumbest thing we could do right now. Seoul, South Korea could be decimated within hours of a strike, and the economic reprocussions of it for not only South Korea, but China and Japan would be huge.

...The American military is stretched far to thin to do anything right now, so this will again have to be a UN operation in Korea.
