Off-track reset?...or cheat?

I was 1.5s behind the leader and he went wide onto the grass, so I drove on past. Instantly, he was back ahead of me by 1.5s. So, either I am just revealing what a newbie I am and others have seen this lots of times, or this guy has an amazing cheat. Just my third online race on gt7...I know there is a reset, but it seems like that put you back on where you went off, and you lost seconds, NOT put you back where you'd be if you'd never gone off. What's up?

Sounds like lag and temporary de-sync.
That’s definitely lag
So are you saying that although I "saw him" go off in the grass, and I "saw him" driving in the grass as I went by, and on the replay, I "saw him " in the grass behind me, and I "saw him" disappear, none of that ever happened? (When I say I "saw him," I mean that was shown on the screen and I could see everything on the screen in the replay, up to the moment he disappeared from the grass and appeared uptrack.) The server didn't know where he was and showed him off track, but he was actually driving up the track the whole time and when the lag was over it showed me where he was? Or something like that? That would make sense. But, in iracing, I see people disappear and reappear and they are never shown on screen in a place where they aren't followed by an impossible, instantaneous leap to a new position.

Yes - when there is bad lag, the cars jitter and sometimes look like they have crashed or gone wide and off track, only to reappear again ahead of you later (presumably when the reconnection happens). This then repeats. If they reappaer in your path, then it is off putting and sometimes leads to collisions or you taking avoiding action when the other car is not actually where it seems.

This happens a lot in lobbies, which are fundamentally flawed in GT7 (unless they have now fixed this?)
