This issue is entirely more trouble than it is worth.

Suffice it to say, Poverty, we're not going to waste our time being particularly careful about policing this situation, since it is very muddy and you're not doing a single thing to make it clearer, or even to make it look better for yourself.

Like it? DIGG IT!] Audi has revealed its 2008 S5 coupe, which will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the new A5 coupe. Although final specs have not yet been disclosed, the S5 is widely expected to get the same 4.2-liter V8 as the S4, delivering 340 horsepower and 302 pound feet of torque.



Like all Audi "S" models, the S5 has sportier suspension, unique front and rear fascias, performance wheels and brakes, carbon fiber interior elements, and the choice of a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox.

If I recall correctly, Audi is killing the A4 Cabio in favor of an A5 Cabrio. Wouldn't really matter I guess since they are essentially the same car.

...The S5 really isn't a threat to anything these days, so I'm not sure who should be worried...
 
Would the A5/S5 be 6 series competitors?


No, the Audi A4 and A5 compete against the four door and two door versions of the BMW 3 series and the like. Like the 5 series / 6 series deal, the A4 is a sedan and the A5 is the coupe and convertable. wayyyy back there was talk of a "BMW 4 series" following the trend of the 6 series but it was scrapped.

The VAG 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four was a staple of Audi and VW's product lineup for close to a decade, but with the addition of the two-liter turbo'd engine a couple years back, it quickly lost its place as the defacto work horse for both brands. However, Audi determined that with a few tweaks, primarily the addition of a direct-injection system, they could revive the erstwhile mill in a move to appeal to consumption-conscious consumers.

They've fitted the TFSI 1.8T to the new A5, making it the cheapest way to get into Audi's newest hotness. Before, a base A5, sporting the 3.2-liter FSI V6 would set you back just over £33,000. When the A5 1.8 TFSI (mit manual) goes on sale, European buyers will be able to get behind the wheel of the Teutonic coupe for over £6,000 less -- and they aren't going to skimp on features either. Buyers abroad will be able to get Milano leather, tri-zone climate control, parking sensors, and an electromechanical parking brake, all standard.

The first four-cylinder engine to power the all-new Audi A5 coupé joins the UK range this week, and fittingly it too is also a completely new design. The advanced, directly injected successor to the familiar 1.8-litre Turbo petrol unit that has powered A3, A4, A6 and TT models in the past creates the A5 1.8 TFSI, which is available to order now for an OTR price of £26,190. First UK deliveries are expected in late November.

Performance-enhancing turbo charging and fuel-rationing FSI direct petrol injection combine in the new unit to deliver 170PS at 4,800rpm and a healthy 250Nm torque peak that remains available from 1,500rpm through to 4,800rpm. As a result, the front-wheel-driven A5 1.8 TFSI with six-speed manual transmission passes the 62mph yardstick 8.4 seconds after take off, and can continue to a top speed of 140mph, all the while demonstrating a healthy dislike for petrol, with up to 39.8mpg possible according to the combined cycle test.

The extensive equipment list from which the first phase of V6-powered A5 models benefits is carried over largely unchanged to the four-cylinder version. It includes luxuries such as Milano leather-upholstery, advanced three-zone climate control and rear acoustic parking sensors, as well as sophisticated features like a space-liberating electromechanical parking brake which are more commonly to be found only in larger luxury cars.

Key optional features for this new lead-in model include Xenon head lamps with LED daytime running lights (£775), a Sport upgrade bringing larger 18-inch wheels, sports seats and further lowered sports suspension (£950), a 505-watt, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system (£525), the Audi Parking System Advanced with rear-mounted camera (£650) and Adaptive Light swivelling headlights (£325).

S5 will come with the 4.2 V8 with 390hp according to my sources.

This car is meant to be the modern version of the audi URquattro, and the audi S2.

This is the first audi car to use its next gen chassis.

It compete more with the CLK than the 3 series, or 6 series. Its sized between the 3 and 6, and also priced the same.

And some people said VW's looked dull. When people said the BMW 3-Series was ''just a car'', they were wrong if you compare it with this. This is ''just a car''!
 
I take it you havent seen one in real life. Every journalist so far has praised the car for its looks. I think its extremely handsome car, and on teh road it certainly has a presence like none other in its price range.
 
My confidence in the 1.8T overall isn't quite enough to believe it to be a good choice over that of the 2.0T. The differences in power output, fuel efficiency, and overall effectiveness even in a "large" car completely outweigh the needs for a "cheap" 1.8T model.

Personally, I'm surprised they're using the American Passat version of the engine. You'd think they would have went with the later 190-225 BHP versions from the TT...
 
It does make you wonder though; if the pre-FSI 1.8T went up to 225hp (actually, 237 with the end-of-line TT Sport), that this could be quite strong if they wanted it to be. But then, the 2.0 would always have the extra displacement to work with.

In a smaller car, having both engines probably makes sense. But I was under the impression the 2.0 would be coming to the A5 range soon, and the small percentage difference in price can't really be swaying a lot of people.

The 1.8T in the car now is different from that in VW's and the audis of the past. If audi wanted it to have 225hp they could have done so but didnt because they wanted the refinement. The 2.0T will most likely be introduced into this car with 220hp or there around.

The A4 by comparison had the 180PS version that came in everything from Jettas and New Beetles up to TTs and whatnot.

Either way, the less-peaky nature of the 2.0T would have seemed to fit a bit more in the A5, particularly given it's size.

I have heard many journalists say the car is boring, and that de Silva calling it his best car design ever is a hilarious overstatement of epic proportions (he designed the 156, remember). The car's overall shape is actually rather generic, from a design standpoint. It has great details, though, I will admit. Except the grill. That looks just as bad as ever.

Yes it may have the same power but the torque curve is different, the engine drinks less fuel and doesnt harm the enviroment as much.

The Audi A5 was unveiled at Geneva to much fanfare, and within 30 seconds of pictures hitting the net the elegant coupe was been surrounded by rumors. We knew the S5 was part of the package, but since the newest Audi had two doors, cabrio conjecture wasn't far behind. Perhaps the most anticipated A5 talked about is an RS version, which could include either the high-revving 420-hp 4.2L V8 found in the RS4, or the Lamborghini-sourced 5.2L V10 found in the S6 and S8.
The scribes over at World Car Fans point out that the RS version typically one-ups AMG and BMW M cars, and with a 480-hp CLK out there, the Gallardo V10 would make a nice trump card. We're inclined to agree with that hypothesis, since Audi already has the powerplant in the corporate parts bin, and there isn't much tuning necessary to get it back up to 500 HP. Audi has also shown just how serious it is about keeping a power edge against RWD competitors after it had the lug nuts to slap twin-turbochargers on the V10 destined for the RS6 Avant. Either way, Audi is no longer interested in being an also-ran in the luxury market, and big-horsepower coupes will only make the brand that much more appealing to enthusiasts.

Sounds like this will be a little rocket. Audi is making pretty good use of that engine. Now let's see a V8 version in the RS4.
 
Meh-zasaurus... I still prefer V8 power whenever possible, and while the A5/S5 is certainly one of the few Audi products I really enjoy right now (yes, I still like the R8, just not as much as the Corvette or 911), it still won't win me over against the Mercedes CLK63. Particularly if we bring the "Black Series" model into the equation...
 
I like a "busy" looking interior. Makes me feel like I'm in the cockpit of an airplane.

I'd rather have 20 buttons with one function each than 2 buttons with 10 functions each. Much easier to access when in a hurry or frustrated. (Probably why the instruments in a cockpit are all single-function—HMM?)

I've seen several on the road. The first time I saw one I had to double-take because I thought it was a 3-series coupe with an Audi badge on it.

Yeah, I saw the S5 at the auto show and it's a handsome car. I just can't wait to see the A4 B8 in person.

IMO the A5 makes the 3 series look plain and ugly.
