This is the first time ever that I think I only downloaded two things. I got Pulse and the H.A.W.X. demo. And considering what game launched this week H.A.W.X doesn't seem so exciting anymore.

I will give Guitar Hero World Tour credit for having the preferred DLC music this week.

Just a quick heads up... lots of content in the updates this week including four new demos:
  • WWE Legends of WrestleMania (currently only available in EU Stores)
  • Watchmen: The End is Nigh
  • Wanted: Weapons of Fate
  • Age of Booty

Besides several game add-ons, videos, themes, and wallpapers - there is a bunch of Watchmen content, including the demo for the game in the NA store... but it is sort of hidden. You have to click on the PlayStation Network Spring Fever thumbnail under New Releases.

I got the five demos from the US store and the free Reds theme. The Reds are winning the series this year!!! And I resisted buying the University of Kentucky theme. If anyone wants to be nice and make me one that looks that good I will not stop you.

Anybody play the Wanted: Weapons of Fate demo? I thought it was pretty cool, though I have a feeling the gameplay will be repetitive. The monologue when you start the game is priceless

I wasn't overly impressed. The slow down ability is getting overused. And the purpose of the curved bullet seemed lost when it was only really effective when it was a headshot. But since you can't actually aim where it hits on the body about 3/4 of my curved shots did almost nothing.

And the story does absolutely nothing for me. The voice work only made it worse.

My family and I are up in Dallas and while here I surprised the nephews with a new PS3, and while loading it up with games and downloads, my sister in-law and her husband were curious about the PSN Video store. I personally have never bothered to use it as I prefer discs over downloads, but I gave them the basic tour and explanations of how the service works... and while doing this I came across a few surprises.

For one, I had the impression that all the content in the Video store is fee based, however, when I was showing them the various download sections in the store I came across an exclusive free preview for NBC's newest drama, Kings... and in very good quality HD no less. However, the real surprise was that they also had available for free, the entire 2-hour first episode in HD no less, and without commercial, so it was really just under 1.5 hours. 👍

Just be warned... it's a 5.1GB file... but well worth it, as it looks noticeably better than NBC's HD broadcast.

This got me wondering what else is free in the PSN Video store, as I have yet to see any post, thread, blog, article, etc on any free content in the Video store.

It didn't take me long before I found at least two other shows that were free, MTV's Nitro Circus: Season 1, Ep.1 (480p) and Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory: Season 1, Ep.1 (480p)... both 30-min shows trimmed down to a little over 20 minutes without commercials.

There is so much content in the Video Store, I didn't have time or the inclination to go searching for every free video I could find, but for those interested, here again are the four that I did see and downloaded:
  • NBC: Kings: Season 1, Exclusive Preview (720p)
  • NBC: Kings: Season 1, Ep.1 (720p)
  • MTV: MTV's Nitro Circus: Season 1, Ep.1 (480p)
  • MTV: Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory: Season 1, Ep.1 (480p)
If anyone knows of or comes across other free content in the PSN Video Store, it would be great if you would let us know. 👍

I came across a very interesting item in the Japanese store:

100_2666.jpg

100_2667.jpg

100_2668.jpg

100_2669.jpg

I tried to find information about this, but so far I have not found any explanation of what it is. I also couldn't find any information about it on the official Japanese PS Store site or the official Japanese PSN site.

I went ahead and downloaded it (231 MB). After downloading I installed it, which like QORE, it is placed in the game menu:

100_2670.jpg

When I started it up, it simply took me to the following screen:

100_2671.jpg

By pressing the select button it showed a key to the controller button functions:

100_2672.jpg

After some experimentation I found the following to be true:
  • The directional buttons will let you highlight a specific 'day'.
  • The circle button will zoom into that specific 'day'.
  • The X button takes you back.
  • The left stick allows you to scroll around the 'image'.
  • Both the right joystick and the triangle and square buttons allow you to zoom in and out of the 'image'.
  • The start button takes you back to the default image size.

The 'image' is quite interesting, as it's not exactly an image in a traditional sense. This became extremely clear when I zoomed into 'Day 17' and saw information and pics of LBP, and when I manually zoomed in even further to what looked like a picture of a TV, all of a sudden a video began to play!

The folowing shows what it looked like when I zoomed all the way out, and then all the way into 'Day 17':

100_2671.jpg

100_2674.jpg

100_2675.jpg

100_2676.jpg

100_2677.jpg

If you have the chance, you should definitely download it and mess around with it just to see how it works for yourself. It is really a fascinating program. I'd love to hear more about it, so if any of find more information about it please let me know. 👍

If this is some weird organizer software I definitely want it for my PSP. That would save me from getting a smart phone without a data plan just for the organizer.

I bought Pearl Jam - Ten, Worms, and Pain's new modes and characters, plus some Rock Band DLC I was behind on.

Ten is the best album released for Rock Band so far. Amazing.
I've only played Even Flow and Jeremy so far, but yes, they are amazing.

I may still have to argue for Rush or The Who being better though. It's a tough call. No Doubt is probably one of the best albums for bass.

Here's hoping they don't do any of Pearl Jam's new and horrible stuff.

You guys are lucky, there hasn't been much worth buying for Guitar Hero World tour. Nothings came close to the greatness of Death magnetic. I'm getting GH: Metallic Sunday :) getting my double bass pedal too.

GH:WT had Queen this week. That is far from shabby. But as for the single band games; I am passing on those. I may consider it for Beatles, after a rent. The only band I would blindly consider that for is Led Zeppelin.

With Guitar Hero already listing something like four titles this year, and no promises of compatibility yet, I am really wondering what their deal is.

I still want to get World Tour, and if they are compatible I may get the World Tour greatest hits thing too, just because the track list will be worth the price alone.

I dont know if you've tried World Tour's drum set but its so much more fun than a 4 pad 5 note set up. It has a learning curve but its fun as hell. My favorite songs on drums are Scream Aim Fire(too awesome), One Armed Scissor and The Day Never Comes.

Also Activison released 2 GH games in 08. EA released 4 for RB with at least 3-4 more this year. Only confirmed titles are "a new Guitar Hero game" and "Greatests Hits"

Im not a Metallica fan but i'm just a metal head. As for the Beatles theres just no appeal for me.

Its shocking how bad Red Octane are at producing quality instruments recently...even worse than EA. Unsurprisingly, the Guitar Hero name has gone down and down and down since Harmonix left it.

Wasn't interested in one-band games before, but The Beatles: Rock Band I might try simply because Harmonix have repeatedly stated it won't be just some track pack like AC/DC, Metallica or Aerosmith have been. They haven't told us much about it, but it sounds hopeful that they are making more of a game out of it rather than just the Rock Band engine with Beatles tracks.

I'm yet to buy Pearl Jam's Ten because once again Sony screwed up uploading the Store again and I can't currently buy the album as a whole yet.
However, I did buy Rock Band 2 and it is brilliant, a massive improvement over RB1, in music variety and the engine itself.

I don't think I'll ever be trying GH:WT after all I've heard about the shoddy instruments, lack of musical variety and the fact I've already sunk a lot of money into Rock Band and its fun as it is. There are a few artists I'd like from GH:WT but I'm satisfied with what I've got in RB.

I propose getting together online at some point and playing the entirety of Ten all at once when I have it, or as much as we can. Who's in?

Also Activison released 2 GH games in 08. EA released 4 for RB with at least 3-4 more this year. Only confirmed titles are "a new Guitar Hero game" and "Greatests Hits"
What 4 games? Are you counting track packs? All I see is RB2 and maybe AC/DC (which I thought was utterly stupid). This year all I know of is a PSP version and The Beatles. I'm not counting track packs because those are just DLC put on a disc for non-DLC people.

For GH this year; Metallica, Greatest Hits, and "a new guitar hero game." I am assuming the new one may be the rumored Van Halen, if not then it is a possible 4 for this year. Or it could be the rumored Guitar Hero 5: Band Hero. And I realize the fourth I had in mind was just them trademarking "Sing Hero." So, 3 already confirmed.

Even then, every Rock Band game (on the same system) works together. AC/DC and Rock Band can export to Rock Band 2 (as can all track packs). Currently, I now have over 300 songs from Rock Band, and I only need to put in one disc. The Beatles game is yet to confirm exportability, and that could be the deciding factor in me making a purchase.

Simply, any games that relies heavily on DLC should be compatible as much as possible. Heck, even SingStar found a way to become compatible across systems, even without backward compatibility available in all PS3s.

Is that what this is? I keep seeing them screw up teh full album/pack thing and didn't know if it was a purposeful delay or just a screw up.

I bought it over the weekend, and I agree. It took care of nearly every complaint I had with the original.

Rock Band instruments will work in World Tour.

Right here! There is a Battle of the Bands thing for it we could do too that just requires a drummer.

Yeah, according to Harmonix, its an issue with pricing when Sony Europe upload the album/pack content, they are apparently going to fix it and seeing as its still not resolved, I'll probably be waiting till this Thursday.

I realise my instruments work with Guitar Hero World Tour, I'm just referring to the "better" GHWT drum kit (as its apparently a selling point) and my real reasons for not bothering with the game itself is simply because I'm satisfied with RB and the core songs are not particularly interesting. Some of GHWT's DLC is nice, but like I said, I've already sunk money into RB and it lacks variety. I also don't want to support an Activision game ever again.

Have you tried purchasing it directly from the in-game music store?

I have the entire album as well, count me in. I usually drum anyway. :)

Yes, many have tried that before, Harmonix have acknowledged the issue and removed it from the in-game store.
If the album is unavailable in the PSN store, it appears as "purchased" in the in game store.

Awesome, we'll have to work out a good time. 👍

Ardius, what instrument do you prefer? I, for some reason, prefer bass, but I can do either guitar.

And does the EU version have the Pearl Jam DLC Battle of the Bands? We need to see when it expires.

And then negotiate whose band we use.

By the way, who is Reluctant Practice (I think that was it)? My band is King Eight Ball.

I'm fairly certain the Battles last one week? I'm not sure.

We don't have to use my band, i don't care about it.

Oh and i can sing or play guitar if Ardius would like to do drums, and switch to bass if one of you wants to play a guitar part. No worries there.

I'd prefer guitar cheers and I assume the band challenege has the same expiration as the US (yes we do have it for clarification). We don't have to do the band challenge of course, but yes that would nice.
I don't mind whose band we use.

I'm not sure where you come up with this but my GH Guitar is wonderful sturdy and gets the job done. Also your opinions seemed very biased based on"all I've heard" Never really sat down got a feel and played for hours. I own GHWT and RB cuz i love music games and dont favor either based on setlist. The gameplay is the draw in GTWT for me especially on drums. GH Metallica is an excellent game for fans of metal and music games.

Completely writing off a game you've never played makes one wonder why they even are into the genre.

I just checked and you are right. It doesn't matter though as it only has Even Flow and Alive. Just go to Quickplay and hit Play All. So, we have no need of using anyone's band.

I'd prefer guitar cheers
We each have a different favorite instrument? We should setup a GTP band.

Any singers? My wife we will sing on the handful of songs she knows. The problem there is that she only plays on easy and it brings down the rest of the band's rating. Of course, I am also contemplating busting out my PS2 headset and singing while playing.

The drums had known issues early one, but I have heard no issue from the guitars. I prefer thr RB Fender because the GH guitar is just way too tiny for me. I prefer the Nyko Front Man for GH because it is slightly bigger, kind of in the middle of the RB and GH guitars.

Gameplay wise I think that Rock Band has pulled it off better. I like the look, layout, design, and career mode better. I'm not exactly big on boss battles. I like the career mode style of Rock Band a lot.

Then the DLC and cross-game compatibility of Rock Band makes it much more convenient. If Guitar Hero wanted to get my attention more it should make it so that all songs are compatible across all titles, even if some can only have certain instruments involved..
