One Race, One Planet - GTPlanet.net & Gran Turismo® Official Guinness World Record Event For Pancreatic Cancer Support

World Record event organiser Shem, through the medium of GTPlanet.net, offers the opportunity to become a legend of sim racing to a handful of GTP members who are tough enough to go above and beyond to become official Guinness World Record holders and promote sim racing as an eSport to a wider, international audience. This momentous event will comprise of a 36 hour race and a charity fundraising drive.

About the World Record:

The current World Record for sim-racing endurance events sits at 30 hours, set in Germany by a pair of sim racers using a Need for Speed title. Hats off to those guys for their achievement.

My aim, with the help of GTP members, is to not just beat this record but to smash it using Gran Turismo and the Playstation as the vessel. The purpose of this page is to rally support for the event and claim this title for the largest collection of GT fans anywhere on the Internet (that’s us!).

Putting together and event such as this requires a huge amount of work. As a community I'm hoping anyone willing to take part can share some of the burden and help to get things off the ground as smoothly as possible.

What does it take?:

12 or more dedicated GTP members with the determination to race for 36 hours in pursuit of a prize that money can’t buy (but perhaps a cash prize if I can swing it). A host of gaming pods to accommodate the brave drivers. A secure, public venue with 24 hour opening to house the event. A crew of caterers, stewards, logistics teams and other associated support personnel. Corporate sponsorship for financial and moral support. A charity to collect donations for.

How do I get involved?:

If you’re keen to be part of this and can offer a small commitment to the project then you may want to check out some of the positions available below. Financial rewards cannot be offered to anyone taking part at any level of the event but being part of a World Record attempt is reward enough in itself (speaking from experience).

When and where will it be held?:

At this moment a specific time has not been set, but what you can know is that it will almost definitely be held in 2015 (these things take months of planning) and will depend largely on factors such as the availability of location, equipment and finances. For more than a few reasons the UK (England specifically) has be chosen to be the location for the event but that doesn't mean that a carbon copy of the event cannot be held in Europe, the Americas, Asia or else where, but anyone interested in setting up a cooperative event in another location will be doing so by their own means; all I can offer is advice on how to get things going.

What makes this event special?:

Aside from being a Guinness World Record attempt and putting GTP and its members at the forefront of sim racing? A charity will be involved. As of yet the charity is undecided and that is where the community comes in. I will be taking suggestions on which charity should be helped out by fundraising linked to the event so if there is one close to your heart, let it be known.

EDIT: GTP's choice charity Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will be the worthy cause for our fundraising attempts.

Aside from the obvious awesomeness of undertaking a world record attempt and raising money for charity there should be plenty of media coverage. The involvement of media sources will perhaps raise the eSport racing platform from a small time hobby to a globally recognised industry.

Be part of it!

There is a lot of work to be done and the majority of it will be my responsibility but there are only a certain amount of hours in the day and a collective mind is more efficient than a single one. Some areas of the events orchestration will require a little time and effort from the GTP community members who may have particular skills or connections that will further enhance the event and allow a broader scope for making this race a global success. The role of each crew member is important and should not be undertaken lightly, the openings for personnel and the duties involved are as follows:

General Managing Assistants to help Famine out with planning details.

Administrative Manager: liaising with stewards, record keeping & note taking.

Catering Manager: providing food, refreshments and comfort for the crew of the event.

Race team

12x dedicated GT racers with the ability to game for 36 hours straight – must be over 18 years of age.

3x reserve racers to occupy a race seat should a 1st team candidate drop out.

2x in-race stewards/ time keepers.

Other

Film/ photography director.

_other positions to follow_

There will be other personnel needs as time move forward. Although many of the roles listed below will fall under my responsibility I would be happy for assistance in any matters regarding:

Location

Sponsorship

Logistics

Media co-operation

Feel free to post any questions you may have and/or any interest in being part of the crew.

Specific event details and updates
Driver specification and requirements: Due to the high demand that I believe the driver positions will attract I will be personally interviewing potential drivers and setting assignments to complete before any driver is accepted. This is to ensure that the drivers are fit and able to take part in the attempt. Priority for the driver team will be given to members who are giving further support to the event.

I will be doing my utmost best to source sponsorship funds for the whole crew to provide food and drink but there is nothing that can be said for certain regarding this aspect right now. If I'm able to pick up a really good sponsorship deal for this then some national travel fees may also be able to be covered.

The Crew:

Director: @W3HS
UK Manager: @Famine. Assisting: @MildAshers, @Sprite (?), @Venari (Steward), @haitch40 (Oppressed person - he said he'll do anything),

Driver Team Candidates:

@MildAshers
@homeforsummer
@Famine
@m8h3r
@Mr. S
@MatskiMonk
@TheBook
@W3HS
@GTP_Ingram
@haitch40
@pezzarinho17

Possibles:
@SlipZtrEm (date dependant)
@Katiegan

FAQs
What makes it official? - I have been given approval by Guinness World Records to attempt this challenge and will be dealing with the evidence package required by them after the attempt is completed.

Who gets the World Record? - Any of the driver team managing to race longer than the current record of 30 hours (under event conditions) will be considered to have broken the record.

Is there a prize for winning? - While at the current stage I have to admit there isn't, one of the things I'm hoping for is a sponsor who will be willing to put up a prize for the driver who manages the full 36 hours (if multiple drivers pass this mark the prize would go the whoever has the most laps).

What happens in the case of a disconnect/internet issue?

Hopefully, considering the type of venue we're aiming for as a host location, a reliable connection should be available. Since It'll be LAN only a single data line from the ISP will be required from outside of the event. Source-Famine & dhandeh.

Can the average PS3 run for 36 hours without overheating?

I can personally confirm that they can. During summer I had my PS3 running B-Spec races for days on end, cooled by nothing more than a simple USB laptop base fan.

Has anyone shown interest in organizing something like this in North America yet?

Not in this thread and not, to my knowledge, outside of it either. If somebody was interested in setting up an event to run in tandem with the UK event then they can feel free to contact me about it.

36 hours on a wheel, must be tough on the shoulders. I assume it will be wheels not controllers?

The target is to get rigs/ pods with wheels, yes. Using a controller for 30+ hours would be soul destroying.

Is it possible to bring in personal sponsors?

I see no reason why not. If you want to raise funds for travel to the event then trying to pick up a personal sponsor isn't a bad way to go about it.

Sounds amazing! Naturally I would love to have an opportunity to be a driver in this and could possibly help provide a photographer and catering supplier. Catering supplier may well depend on location, which again, if you need any help with my partners mum runs an events company in Norfolk so might be able to get some tips or some dibs on a venue. East of England might not be ideal for general travel reasons however.

Traveling to across the Atlantic ocean for the sole purpose of breaking a record?

I might could get in on that..

If there is enough drive and motivation in you to do it then you will find a way. I will say, however, anyone volunteering to be a driver will need to give full commitment and do some preparation. I think I'll even go as far as Skype interviewing any potential candidates.

You sound like you would be a big help to the event, mate! If you were willing to be involved to the extent you mention and could pull off 36 hours of racing then I'd be more than happy to consider you a spot on the driver's team. :) 👍

100% willing! 2015 gives a good chunk of time for preparation and getting things done, particularly as I know the business of events like you say can take months to setup even when everything has been planned. So I shall certainly throw the East of England into the hat as a host, I can have a chat with a few people and get some ideas on what types of venue would be suitable for this kind of thing. At last at a preliminary level, even if we don't go for the East it could help give you some idea of what, logistically and cost wise will be involved.

@MildAshers, that would be fantastic and really appreciated. As you are the first person to offer support for the event would you like to be considered for a place on the first team of driver? Obviously some minimum requirements should be met but I feel that a place on the driver's team is a fair reward for the support that you've offered.

This would be an amazing feat to pull off, Shem. 👍

I'd consider getting in touch with PlayStation UK to do this. Helping out with a GWR would certainly be some good publicity! :lol:

I think I mentioned in the Infield when you first brought this subject up that I'd be interested, and that still applies now.

You know I'll be involved in every respect I can be.

Which includes everything - driving, managing (ask anyone who's done a UKGTP LAN :D ), shouting at people (ibidem), media/PR, yadda yadda...

For reference on the charity front, GTP's nominated charity is Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and @Jordan usually donates December's Premium subscriptions to them.

I would totally want to be a driver on this, but being in the UK makes it tough for me to be present at this event. If this was in America, I would most likely be able to talk Diaego along with one of the Casinos in Connecticut into hosting the event. Those 21+ would have a blast there also :-) but alas UK :-(

Can we call it a deal and put you down for a managerial position? Also, would you like to volunteer as part of the driver team because I remember how much fun the 4 Hour Nurburgring Endurance was for us all, think 36 hours is your cup of tea?

@homeforsummer, would you like to join the potential driver list?

You wouldn't be able to stop me doing either.

Pods are a possibility, depending on your schedule (difficult to get hold of May-to-September, relatively easy October-April), but venues themselves are a nightmare. I tried Meadowhall ('cos central, really easy to get to and large public space) back when you mentioned it in the Infield and, though they'd be happy in normal circumstances, they can't facilitate anything like a 36hr stretch.

I did a bit of scouting and found that some of the larger, South-England based centres around the capital are open 24 hours but I'm yet to make any contact. I do realise that the it will inconvenience somebody no matter where it is held but obviously the easier to get to and the more facilitating the better.

At some point next week once a few more people have found have realised they have a way of helping out a conversation can be set up and more thoughts processed. For the large part this will be a team effort and to be honest I was dreading having to organise something of this scale on my own from the other side of the world.

I'll be getting myself back to London for the event (I'd like to be on the driver team) but I doubt if I can any time before the month of when it'll take place.

Just so I've got this straight, does everyone drive continuously for 36 hours straight or do they do shifts like in Le Mans?

That would be fantastic. And as I said, whether driver or not you have my full support regardless.

Hmm.

Let me subscribe to this thread. Definitley interested in this!

If it's being held in the UK that'll be much easier for me.

I'd love to help in any way, a driver, organiser or even just making a few sandwiches :)
Since you're asking for 18+ how about trying to host it in a pub? I know a few of those :lol:

Well from the casual chat in the infield you know my answer. I am willing to drive 36 hours straight.
And thank you for organising it all.

I am happy to do anything else as well if there is no room for me as a driver.

In shifts.

From what I have read in the infield it is straight.

I'm getting more and more interested in this. I honestly don't think I could go 36 hours straight, but I'd love to be part of the support crew! Any team will do, and I don't mind doing 2 or more positions. If it's held a convenient time for me, I want to be there and I want to help. :)

EDIT: If I have the chance, I might try a trial run on my own and see how long I can go playing GT, if I find I can do 36 hours I'll definitely reconsider being a driver.

Agreed, I read the quoted article, and it's 36hrs straight per player (with a 10 minute break per 2 hours, I believe).

It will be hard. I haven't played that long before but I have been up and attending lectures with that little sleep before and it really kills you.

I'll only do it before term starts, I couldn't do it if I had lectures a day or two afterwards. The main event, though...

Oh also I am willing to help publicise the event beforehand to attract visitors. I will need a platform though as my twitter account isn't exactly the most popular in the world. If it involves delivering flyers round the local area a day or so before then I would do that as well depending on date.
Also willing to do media interviews and stuff although for trying to convince media people to report on us there are likely better people than me.

Also willing to help with the planning.
