If I knew that, Shem would have a harder record to aim for.

I'd love to take part in this, but I'm at the other side of the Atlantic...has anyone shown interest in organizing something like this in North America yet?

I would definitely be interested!!

Just a suggestion, but given their involvement in GT Academy and all other events relating to GT in the UK, might it be worth contacting HPS Jardine to help raise the profile (and therefore potential for raising money)?

I'll be tapping them up at the UK final next week. Or next next week. Or whenever it is. It's in my calendar.

I've been a Race Steward for the Red Bull Gridsters before (2012) so I can volunteer for that, schedule permitting.

I think you'll need more than two though - more like four for shifts and keeping timekeeping separate. Your Guinness personnel might have something to say about it too.

What sort of time were you thinking of the event starting? 9am?

I was just thinking if you allow people a lie in it may improve their stamina to last the 36 hours.

You would need to start as early as possible to compensate for body clocks and such, as I wouldn't want to finish at 2am on what would be the 3rd day.
Just to clarify, I was 99% joking about it being in a pub, since the pub I currently work in would no doubt be available but there's nowhere near enough space for it all. Luckily in my shifts we don't have enough customers to worry about drunkards.
Also, my 80gb fat ps3 which I got as a refurb 5 years ago is still going strong. It just needs about 6 inches of space behind it for the heat to escape 👍

If everyone wants to do 9 that is fine. I wouldn't mind a late start and a 2/3am finish though no matter what job I end up doing.

Guys, we are a long way from setting a date or time and I think I will probably consult some professional types to enquire about start times that will best aid staying awake. I think, personally, 9am is a tad early and was thinking a lunch one start but this is a group event and the group will get the vote.

RE PS running time: during a hot Chinese summer I've run B-spec racing for days on end using the Slim PS and only had a laptop USB cooling fan to help with ventilation.

Ok, so next week I'll be contacting companies about sponsorship. While I have a collection of firms I will contact does anyone have any bright realistic, ideas for sponsorship? Not like "ask the FIA, yo!" Because that's a bit unrealistic, but any sensible suggestions will be taken further and I'll get my blagging skills warmed up. ;)

Potential companies you can ask:

  • Playseat, Thrustmaster - They could sponsor the seats and wheels.
  • PlayStation - It *is* Gran Turismo, after all. They could sponsor some PS3s for you to use, too.
  • Any UK Internet service provider - To give us the interwebs!
  • An energy drink company - While you guys might not actually drink it, an energy drink to sponsor the event seems quite fitting, as you'll be staying up for a long time.
  • A local radio station could be up for sponsoring you guys, too.

What about holding the event at the Eurogamer expo next year?

Red Bull are high on list of people to approach since they already do sponsor esport events.

An ISP is a pretty good idea, as too is Sony. I've browsed a few companies that hire out their rigs for events but I've a feeling they aren't in the business of lending as sponsors since their profit ones from rental.

I'll check out the details for Eurogamer but think it may pose a problem with the date; I think the most practical time would be during the summer when I think more people will have the time to spare, I could be wrong though.

Good point. But definitely look into it. EGX last year sold at least 70,000 tickets over the weekend. That expo is big.

Man, that's a good call, @Daniel. EGX is already hosting tournaments and what we're doing here is certainly not a mainstream, done before FPS competition.

Getting a venue lined up is the first step. I wouldn't like to approach a potential sponsor without at least have a few foundations. A high profile event also give great scope for marketing opportunities for anyone involved.

EDIT: EGX has been sent an inquiry/ proposal email. I'm not hoping for much but what ever the response I'll be sure to share it.

EDIT: and Ace Cafe has also been contacted.

I'll take a look a that, thanks. 👍

Edit: seems that's more of a private hire type venue which isn't ideal for the scale of what I'm hoping to pull off here. I'm sure it won't hurt for me to inquire but I feel a more publicly open location is more suited for promoting the event and where there are more people there is more opportunity to raise cash for the charity.

I didn't see you'd got a new thread up for this. It all looks like it's picking up speed which is great!

I'd love to put my name down. Not sure what else I can offer away from the racing except making some coffee's or something.

I'm not saying I'll manage the 36 hours without blacking out but I'm happy to try. I'll do some long endurances at home first to get a feel and build up to it.

Like everyone else it's date and time permitting. I'm having a baby at the end of 2014 so if it's say January-March I'd probably be too busy to do them things but other than that I'm up for getting involved.

Great to hear you'd like to give it ago. I'm happy to put you down as a driver if you think you could give it a try.

If you can test yourself and see if you can survive the 30ish hours needed then great.

I'm hoping to race myself but at this point I'm so wrapped up in the planning I don't want take a position that someone else could fill. I'm going to try staying up (not gaming though) for two days next weekend as I have 4 days off to try it.

@W3HS

I'd be in for either driving or doing photo stuff thingies...going to the UK to play a game, hell yeah! :D

If you'd like to race then being a photographer would be a bit tricky. We will need somebody to manage the photography side of things for the purpose of record evidence but without drivers we won't have an event!

It would be nice to have some non-British drivers taking part so that it really can be an international competition (you're German living in France, right?). :)

Great work Shem, as ever!

I'd like to help, but I've really got no particular skills to offer :D

I've done 36 hours awake a few times, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not, but the longest I've played GT for was probably about 8 hours straight! Anyhow, it'll probably be worth speaking to a professional about fitness (physical and mental!) training for those that will need to stay awake - it is after all key to the attempt!

I'll keep my eyes on this, I'm not a good enough racer to drive, but depending when and where is help I'll be happy to help out anyway I can.

Can you tell me the current status of who has put themselves forward for what? Mostly out of interest.
For sponsorship. Have you considered asking some local restaurants? We are going to need food during the event so this could be a chance for them to provide it and us to advertise them.

1. Not yet, I don't have a computer so can't collect a list of who has volunteered for what. I should be able to sort that out in the week.

2. Local restaurants are small scale, and as of yet there is no decided location. While I'm looking or sponsorship it will be to cover things like food and drinks. The more sponsors there are the more difficult things get to juggle.

Sponsorship can be broken down quite easily.

Title sponsor, several key sponsors, and then sponsors that pay for space on tshirts, banners and flyers.

Don't forget guys, you'll be allowed a 10 minute break so micro sleeps are certainly an option and probably necessary.

I've done over 30 hours while travelling half way around the world and that wasn't too difficult.

Ten minute breaks will be available every few hours but I think they'd be better spent using the loo and scoffing down food!

Several sponsors would be welcomed (if I can generate enough interest) but too many will just be a headache.
