Man, that's a good call, @Daniel. EGX is already hosting tournaments and what we're doing here is certainly not a mainstream, done before FPS competition.

Getting a venue lined up is the first step. I wouldn't like to approach a potential sponsor without at least have a few foundations. A high profile event also give great scope for marketing opportunities for anyone involved.

EDIT: EGX has been sent an inquiry/ proposal email. I'm not hoping for much but what ever the response I'll be sure to share it.

EDIT: and Ace Cafe has also been contacted.
I've put in a query to the Gaydon Heritage Motor Museum too...

Speaking of international drivers, I'd like to give it a shot. I've done 24-hour endurances in one go before (Nurb in GT4, in case you're wondering), but never tried 36 so I'll have to test that. About the only way I'll be able to afford a ticket is by raising some money of my own, so a question: is it possible to bring in personal sponsors?

I'll provisionally put my name down as a driver, or possibly back-up driver.

I'll happily take a 'back-seat' because I don't have much of a presence in terms of GTP or GT online racing, so therefore feel somewhat un-deserving. However, I have been an avid fan of Gran Turismo since the franchise was born, it's the reason I bought a Playstation, a PS2, and a PS3. Physically and mentally, I've done up to 48 hours awake in the past, I did A-spec the endurance races in GT4, albeit in a couple of sittings, and I've got plenty of 24 hour race spectating experiences under my belt... both at the circuit, and via teh interwebz. I'll admit I'm not the fastest driver in the world, but I do race race cleanly. Based in the Midlands, so pretty easy to get to most venues in the UK.

I can't sign up as a driver because of 3 reasons:
-I'm too young
-I can't afford a trip to the UK
-My knee locks after 2 hours of driving.

Anyway, I can suggest though, @W3HS, you should try to strike a sponsership with some big retailer or grocerie shop or whatever you call that, because they can supply food and drink, instead catering or some restaurant (maybe just to cook the food that shop might give). Unfourtunatly I don't have any important connections, to help you than brainstorming.

Good luck to everyone that participates and I hope you can chase down that record.

Depending on when this will happen in 2015, I might be able to offer my mediocre driving abilities, since I'll just be across the Channel for a few weeks in Spring...

I'd really like to be involved in this, but I'm not quite sure what I'd be able to get stuck into being such a young 'un. I obviously won't be able to be a driver (unless it's held after November 25th 2015 :sly:) but I'd love to help in any other way I can.

As for sponsors, you could always ask Monster. They sponsor everything. :P

Been having a think, and come up with a few things that may or may not need addressing.

Insurance - If it's being held in a public area (shopping centre, leisure hall etc), then they will have their own Public Liability policy, but as this may be considered different to what their normal business is, there may be a separate policy needed. Also, if sponsors are putting money in, they might want certain demands. You will need to make sure the is no nasty small print from them.

Risk Assesment - Follows on from the above, but some sort of risk assessment will need to have been made on the activity, this will include PAT testing of the equipment, potential for damage/harm to participants/public etc. (I can advise on this PM for more info).

Pre Event Medical - 36 hours sat in a chair racing cant be good for the bones, so some sort of professional advice should be available to limit and potential injuries, which could effect performance (no out of context quotes please!)

During Event First Aid -.I am a qualified first Aider at work so could assist with any insurance requirements for first aid to be available, but obviously not for the professional advice.

If Sony do get involved, maybe get Walkmans (or other brands if possible) music players. Listening to a vacuum cleaner for 36 hours straight will send the majority of us to the looney bin.

If you'd like to race then being a photographer would be a bit tricky. We will need somebody to manage the photography side of things for the purpose of record evidence but without drivers we won't have an event!

It would be nice to have some non-British drivers taking part so that it really can be an international competition (you're German living in France, right?). :)
True, I can do one of those - preferrably I'll take photos etc. :)

Correct for the nationality and location. ;)

Oh dear.

But one part has me curious:

According to the official guidelines, only one person had to be playing at any one time and the team got a 10-minute break for every hour they played.

This is the exact opposite of what I was told in an email just last week. I shall have to contact Guinness again and have this explained. That particular part of the article just doesn't make sense to me.

If the case is that "only one person had to be playing at any one time" then it would mean a longer time is easily achievable.

Still 36 hours is more than 35.

EDIT: The exact question and reply I had from Guinness just last week:

2) the current record is held by two people. Did the current record holders race each other constantly throughout the attempt or did they take turns at racing against an AI (computer controlled) opponent?

I ask because I had planned to organise my own attempt using a team of drivers who would pilot the same car in a race against the computer AI with them doing several hour stints and changing driver every 3-4 hours the way in which real world endurance racing operates with multiple drivers on a team.

//For this attempt you are free to play against other players or have them play against the AI. However for the participant to actually count towards the record in the end, they must have all played from beginning to end together.

Am I misinterpreting something here?

It isnt clear! Sounds to me that as long as the same person starts the event and ends it, you can have as many people in between. So if you have one rig, the same person must be sat there at the start and finish. If you have two rigs, then whoever does the longest will get the record, the other wont?

To me it sounds more like the reporter hasn't got a clue and the participants - all of whom drove all of it - do.

It does come across in the article that they all ran. One saving up all his breaks, why if he wasn't driving it all.

Good effort to them though for 35, but 36 is a even number, always better. :sly:

I do believe they [website] have cocked up that article somehow and, like mentioned above, the reporter hasn't got a clue what happened.

So, the bar has been raised. I had expected something like this but not so soon. It happened twice while I was touring so I won't let it bother me too much, only that I need to reconfirm the exact guidelines for the attempt and aim for the nice, even 36. :)

More confusion from standard.net.ua:

The group of mates smashed the record of “longest video games marathon playing a racing game” set in 2009 by several hours as they finished with 35 hours and 46 minutes, using different games in the Mario Kart series on the Wii U, Wii and Nintendo 64 consoles.

So what exactly went on here? Did they all play different systems at the same time or did they run a race and then switch to another track for the next one as a group? Looks like I'm going to have a lot of figuring out to do tomorrow. :grumpy:

I think it might mean that they can't all go for a break at once, as long as one game is still being played it counts towards the record. I just don't see how the guy could have a nap and still be counted, otherwise I could hold the record for the longest time spent awake, if you don't count all the time I'm sleeping.
EDIT: At some point in the next couple of weeks I'll do an endurance race on gt and see how I get on and hopefully I'll be a possible driver.

If it turns out that we can have breaks longer than 10 minutes and don't need to be driving non-stop for 36 hours each then I am absolutely up for this.

To be honest this has got to me a bit. It's not that the record has been up'd but that I now have to go throughout the rules meticulously and double check with Guinness about any quiries that need to be answered.

I fail to see how they used multiple consoles unless the each ran on a different one without swapping.

The Guinness site is yet to be updated still.

I had a similar situation planning for my last attempt where media articles had claimed that the record had been broken but it turned out that it wasn't the case, though this one seems legit.

These recent developments don't take anything away from what we're trying to achieve here. I'm hoping our event will be on a much bigger scale.

Not having the use of international calls on my sim I'm going to have to deal with my inquiries by email which isn't that fastest way of dealing with the oraganisation.

How irritating.

If, somehow, I'm in the UK or free to go to the UK with sufficient funds on the date that this is eventually held, I'd love to drive or be a backup/relief driver. I've done some pretty long sub-24 hour stints before, but I also don't drink coffee or energy drinks. Hop me up on some Red Bulls and I'd probably be good. :D It would be nice to add a second World Record to my collection.

At the moment I have no idea if I'd be able to swing it, though. I graduate college in May 2015, and after that where I end up is uncertain. Could be London, could be San Francisco, could be Boston.
