Ongoing PSN outages

I'm having problems as well. Can't log on to PSN. Would be a lot more helpful if they could write what's actually wrong instead of just returning an error code...

Today marks the release of the Playstation Home update, which is global and is perhaps the reason for this outage....Anonymous has stated that they're done with Sony so how come everyone blames them?

It just went down in Minnesota... man what's the point of this attack? If it's settled why bother hacking PSN servers, it's not like they're going to accomplish anything beyond angering players around the world.

They manipulated a program and got called on it, then they bring down the network. I don't exactly sympathize with them.

And you trust hackers? Lol. Playstation Home update sounds like a pretty opportunistic time to strike.

But regardless, like I said in the OP, we don't know if this is the case. But this is certainly not "global scheduled maintenance."

I just hope PSN is back up before my Playseat arrives!

Lol I keep hitting quote on myself instead of edit. Damn iPad app.

Ya ok. I would love to know where you're getting your information from...

this is not how ddos attacks work... also, it would be more likely they would want to compromise Sony's server. Gather incriminating or embarassing data, then post said data like they did to HBGeary. I wont bore you with technical tidbits but the way sony authenticates users, specifically that they use a secure-ish connection based on your specific ps3 unit and furthermore its location makes a "hack" on this scale very very challenging and would almost ensure that a majority of the perpetrators would get caught. This means that a.) they could easily filter various users from various locations before they had anything like a dDoS on their hands as failsafe measures are surely built in to their systems as various as they are. and; b.)the geo-location procedures would not allow a handful of users to take down servers world-wide no matter how many proxies and vpns they used because of reasons stated above. You can test this on a variety of games but one that i have experience with is F1:CE. Sony shut down the North america servers almost immediately and thus the only way for me to play online was to get a proxy, use an old ps3, make a UK account, log in securely to the uk servers using the proxy server settings in the network setup, and finally order a UK (pal version of the game).
Sorry but I just dont like people jumping to blame someone/ something that they dont understand, while discounting the fact that Sony has been all but ethical regarding their T&C's. I dont support Anon. but I do see their point and I also see that they are trying misguidedly or otherwise to protect people against oppression wherever they see it (wrong or right or otherwise).

It seems it's just server maintenance, would be nice for a heads-up warning but oh well.

ok so I have decided that there is only one way to settle this... A DUAL! or tripple etc... as it seems we are all anxiously awaiting the reinstatement of services. lets race when it does come back up

No, I agree. But I do like Anonymous. They bring something new to our world regarding the distribution of power in societies. That they helped take down the goverments of Tunisia and Egypt is no mean feat. This is what they wrote after the previously admitted PSN attack:

Greetings, Sony Customers And PS3 Users. We are Anonymous.

During the last few days, Anonymous has been targeting Sony for their outrageous treatment of not only PS3 users and jailbreakers, but also of the general public. Their propaganda regarding jailbreaking implies that it encourages piracy and thereby makes people lose their jobs, whereas jailbreaking actually just means you are making YOUR device do what it should do. Imagine if Microsoft forced you to use Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or Chrome. Imagine if they denied users from using any other web browser than their own. Many people would obviously be pissed... but then, why aren't you pissed at Sony?

The fact that their litigation demanded information on everyone who had viewed the material, was completely unacceptable. This is a threat not only to the gaming community, but to freedom of information in general. The fact that the privacy of individuals can be violated, simply for accessing information, and legal action can be taken for doing something with something you own, are steps far beyond the line. Anonymous decided it could not allow this to stand. If jailbreaking a phone for use of legal (unsigned) apps is found legal, why would this be any different for the Geohot case, seeing as Geohot explicitly states he does not support piracy?

Anonymous is not attacking the PSN at this time. Sony's official position is that the PSN is undergoing maintenance. We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.

Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.

This operation is a response to Sony's attempt to deprive their customers of products they bought and therefore own, wholly and completely. Anonymous will not attempt to fight this by following the exact same course of action. We have plenty of tricks up our sleeves.

As a last point, we would like to point out that different operations are "run" by different people. Those who are involved in the organisation of OpSony, are not necessarily those involved in that of SonyRecon. Anonymous Operations are generally independent efforts, and it would be a mistake to assume that the same individuals are responsible for every action taken. Anonymous is comprised of people with diverse points of view, of which not all coincide with one another.

That being said, our campaign against Sony and others that would trample on the idea of free information will continue, until we are satisfied with the outcome.

We are Anonymous,
We are legion,
We never forgive,
We never forget,
Expect us.

But this attack has ended or so they said. I think it's a Sony F'up as they try to reengineer the service to make it hack proof or something like that.

it looks like they (sony is rebooting their servers) as i cant get a ping from any of their ip's hopefully it should be under an hour til we are good to go... dont quote me though

Again, more confirmation of the servers being under maintenance.

posimosh, if GT5 was getting an update, only GT5's servers would be down. One update for a game isn't going to cripple everyone's connection.

No, but an update to Playstation Home might....

Here's another theory from the comments on the us blog (before that too succumbed):

I have had nothing but hassles since last Thursday – I’ve been able to log into PSN sometimes, but usually it’s down. Every time it’s down, I’ve discovered that I can’t visit us.playstation.com, or blog.us.playstation.com either. I’m almost certain the problem is that legit traffic is being filtered by Prolexic, the company that Sony has hired to combat the DDoS attacks. I’ve had NO problem getting to community.us.playstation.com, a server that isn’t protected by Prolexic (try a traceroute to those servers and you’ll see they end at a prolexic.com server).

I’m ticked, not because I’ve been unable to get online, and to the websites, but because of the time I’ve spent trying to fix the issue on my end. I nearly went out and bought a new router because I thought that was the problem.

I get this error 80710A06 this morning and no luck in connecting so far. Will try again at noon, cheers!

I got the same error this morning in the UK and the same result with my US and Japanese accounts as well. Web Access via the PS3 still worked though.

That is interesting but doesn't explain a global outage unless... Anonymous had infiltrated Prolexic! Sorry I had to do it.. Ah well, I waited long enough for it to come back up. I'm going to sleep. Hope it comes back up for you guys.

here is a nice summary about how sony looks inept and even shocked every time they have scheduled maintainence... ok ok so maybe it is a bit hyperbolic to say inept, but notice the lack of foresight and general cluelessness of each post. like the bosses said, "Dang the memo about the update didnt get posted? make the social media guy break it to our users... but dont admit any copeability, and try to act suprised... like we had no idea this was gonna happen @ or around midnight PST on a tuesday or more likely, thursday every other week."
