opinions on the use of 4X4 or SUV's in GT5 prologue or GT5

Let's not forget the Jay Leno Tank car

There's a lot of place for all sorts of novelty motors but NOT at the expense of any cool ones. I'd hate to think the batmobile made it into the final release but they had to take the '69 GT40 out to make room :nervous:

SUVs (Chelsea tractors)?

Err, no.

Some proper 4x4's (Land Rover/Bowler Wildcat etc) for the offroad stages?

Yes.

I'd love a go in one of them Wildcats, ever since the Richard Hammond 'Driving god' incident on top gear - they look like big fun!

Why not? it's the main difference between gt and other games.

Family cars? why not.
electric/flex-fuel/atomic cars? why not.

I can understand certain cars being included in GT for novelty (That Renault F1 supervan) or promotional purposes, but to include a large number of SUV/trucks/vans in GT is just idiotic.

Firstly because SUVs and road course is like trying to mix oil and water. Everything about an SUV is opposite of a what a road racing machine should be.

Secondly, including a large number of SUVs would undoubtedly mean that some cars like the one in the pic (Ferrari 330 P3) would get left out. And honestly, who here would rather drive a Ford Excursion (flopping and lumbering around in the Nring) over this?

GT is a racing game, but more so it's about driving cars that your average joe never even knew existed.

It would be cool to see some performance SUV's like the Infiniti FX45, BMW X5, Jeep Gran Cherokee SRT-8, and a personal favourite the GMC Typhoon. They are still vehicles and if PD wants to reach out to be the number one driving simulator it needs to give it's users all sorts of vehicles to drive.

That is pure BS that can apply to a dozens of cars that have appeared throughout the series over the years. How many people wanted a dozen Nissan Skylines over some European sports car? Who wanted the Honda Today G over and American muscle car? Exactly. You can't quantify one car over another just because it would be a better car to drive in the game, as the series has stood for years as not caring about that fact and instead trying to appeal to all.

A SUV would probley be just as fun or funner than what some people had with the Ram. Imagin a Suburban in the Sunday Cup!

And I collect Today G's in GT4...

At the rate GT5 is being developed is obvious PD is gonna have to make a lot of "cuts". Like I said, they already include novelty cars in GT, why do we need to throw SUVs in there too taking up space that could've been used for something better. With online racing being the new thing in GT, I hope PD includes more race cars and less of the other stuff.

In any case SUVs have never really been a big part of GT, and I hope it stays that way. It has worked so far. SUVs may be popular here in the US, but people in Europe and Japan might not be too fond of seeing a Dodge Ram on Spa or Suzuka respectively.

So the whole testing the Porsche Cayanne and BMW X5 at the Ring is irrelevant then? There are some SUV's out there that should be included in the game because of their performance ability.

Er...why wasn't this moved to the GT5 forum until now?

I didn't care much for SUVs in GT4, although I will admit the Dodge Ram 4x4 was fun for a few races, as long as you weren't expecting sports-car like handling. The Audi Pikes Peak wasn't bad either, but since it had 500+hp, you could look the other way even though it handled so tippy. Of course, the Q7 that it became is nowhere near as much fun (more like riding an elephant).

you've never heard of the X5 M, X6, TRD Tacoma X-Runner or cayenne turbo?

all 4 would destroy a 350Z on the track

Perhaps if they had an off-road course, like those C.O.R.R. uses, or an S.S. from the Dakar Rally, we might be able to justify it better.

On what planet does this race take place? Let me spell it out for you, lower weight and centre of gravity counts for a hell of a lot more than bhp. Otherwise a challenger tank would beat a formula 1 car :dopey:

Plying an SUV with horsepower won't always equate to a faster laptime.

The Cayenne for example, 550hp but it still weighs 2355kg. That's not far of a ton more than the 350Z. Throw in the heightened centre of gravity and I'd actually suggest that it would struggle to keep up to a Z.

I can't find the link, but I've read the Cayenne Turbo is faster than the 1st generation Boxster S on the Ring...

...And that says a lot considering the Boxster is one of the best handling cars out there.

I like the idea of a Cayenne on a Rally course, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow etc.
If Porshe will be in GT5 in the first place...

The Cayenne would be great in a situation like a Raid stage...at least after modifications. all of my SUVs and trucks in GT4 are put on their highest suspension setting, dirt tires, and nice, compliant, off-road springs.

I highly doubt that.

sorry to burst your bubble, but an BMW X6 50i lapped the ring in 8 minutes 35,which is only 2 seconds of a Porsche Boxter S. So obviously saying that they are not as fast or as fun to drive as other cars is rubbish, and as this shown by this time and many reviews.👍👍 Just look at this review for example, written by a respected journalist;

Suvs in GT?!?!

No
Non
Nein

I would infinitely prefer PD to spent more time on including all those historic race cars from Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, etc. than a single second on one of those things.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I don't like the fact that there are pickup trucks in GT4. A lot of time was wasted on creating these and the many same model replications while many legends were overlooked. I guess I have a preconceived notion of what to expect to see at a race course but that perception was created by reality and seeing a field of micro cars with a Dodge Ram stuck in the middle of the pack is just silly. A truck is used to tow the racecar to the track. The car goes to the track and the truck stays in the parking lot with the SUV's and minivans. Besides, if you put the truck on the track, what are you going to do with the spare parts, toolbox, grill, lawnchairs, and beer?
And what sort of tuning would be available for SUV's? Heated seats, accessory outlets to charge the cell phone, LCD screens for each headrest? It would be rather strange racing against one of these, pulling up close to the rear, looking through the back glass and seeing some kid in the back seat playing Gran Turismo.

You guys really need to get in touch with this guy:

And silly me, SUV's can't go racing, especially on the 'Ring

Seriously some SUV's will work just fine in a racing game. I would rather have the Cayanne, X5 or Typhoon over some cube looking Japanese car that has 40hp and isn't worth anything at all. I'm not saying put normal, everyday SUV's in like the Ford Escape, but rather stick with the more performance oriented ones.

-> I kinda replied about this topic before from an another thread:

TVB on 12-01-2007
-> I'd like to post some comments in regards to the post below:

My votes for the 8 Dumbest requests ever, no particular order:

Offroad/ SUV Great idea, with tons of potential even. Offroad driving is really very difficult and technical in real life, but you know that the vast majority of people who play a game like this will put their foot to the floor and bounce off whatever comes near them to get to the finish line first. This seems like another good candidate for a separate game, for the right crowd.

SUV/Pickup/Trucks-> The trucks that me and BuickGNX88 are talking about are not rock-crawlers you were implying, like these:

^ There will be games that will feature this type of sport.

-> What we were implying are ONLY for racing in the proper race track or street circuit and/or rally type/point-to-point off-road (both traditional GT rally course and Baja/Dakar type). Like these ones:

I stand corrected. And stunned

So does this mean we've been lied to by those evil aerodynamic boffins? What we need to do is make our cars heavier and taller?

I have a cunning plan -Quick someone fetch me a gokart, a tractor engine, half a ton of concrete and a ladder - I'm entering formula1 :D

The source I use timed the Boxster S at 8:23...

But I digress, my issue was really with the idea that they'd destroy a 350Z.

While I respect the X6's time, it's 9 seconds off the 350Z's time (8:26).

Most of those shouldn't be even thought about, honestly a Ford Aerostar? A Jeepster? A Caravan? An Astro? Seriously who wants to even think about racing this?

The only SUV's and trucks that should be include are the ones that are fast in the first place. The SRT-8 Cherokee would be good, the Sy/Ty would be good, and to some lesser extent maybe a VUE Redline.

ROFL - that pic looks like a british transit! Which reminds me - the german girl in top gear looked like she was having a whale of a time taking one of those round the Ring 💡
