Playstation 3 System Update Thread

I doubt that the problem is that the PS3 cant handle it. Im sure it would have no problem with in game xmb and in game music, but it just hasnt been implemented yet. I wish it could have been in from the start, but Im patient enough, and no doubt Sony will deliver.

But dosent the lack of ram the Playstation has cause it to have some limitations in that way?

This probably just shows my ignorance to how computers work but I just wanted to raise the point and maybe learn something!

Dude the ps3 has eight processors to distribute the load along with like 256MB of ram. Its should be fine, but I ain't any PS3 specialist.

heres a preview of Firmware 2.40 running on a debug console :sly:
shows there will be ingame music and ingame friends list and Trophy Awards
enjoy

Apparently new update is for PS1 and PS2 compatibility, nothing special.

Roll on 2.4 with in game XMB.

Where did you learn this? And I thought they where no longer doing ps2 compatibility updates. Maybe just PS1 then I would guess.

The Playstation Blog mentioned that it was improving stability when playing select PlayStation format titles.

I also haven't heard anything about added stability for PS2 titles.

Although I never heard that they were no longer working on PS3 BC issues.

I know I heard that the XBox 360 has quit getting XBox BC compatibility updates. But I suspect that was because they are now selling XBox games online for DL.

And...

CVG
CVG has managed to get its grubby hands on the final list of features for the hotly anticipated Firmware 2.4 update, which was yesterday rumoured to be due early next week. But that's not the case we've been told...

Update: Since our original story went live, we've received further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.4 update. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a levelling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 levelling up system, we reckon. Update Out

Speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, a source has told CVG that Firmware 2.4 is expected to launch in around three weeks' time. A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would be the perfect time to launch the Sony XMB assault.

Announcing something and making it available at the same time is the way forward, as Microsoft proved by revealing Doom isn't just coming to Xbox Live Arcade, it's on Xbox Live Arcade a few E3s ago. Apple is known for this approach too.

We've also scooped the following list of XMB features that you'll be able to access in-game. Here goes:

Friend category
View, send, receive messages
Manage downloads
Set the vibration feature of the controller
Sign in to PlayStation Network
Register friends
Manage Bluetooth devices
Terminate the game
Music category
Use the system BGM
Work the system BGM operation panel
Settings category
Assign controllers
View profiles
Game category
Set audio devices
Use the voice changer

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column. It's unclear whether this feature will be compatible with all games or just new titles created with more recent development tools.

The system BGM will offer functions such as Play, Stop, Previous track, Next track, Change repeat mode, Change shuffle mode, Change volume (five levels). When you stop the playback of your tunes, playback of the game music will then begin.

Sony has yet to confirm or deny any of this and won't comment on rumour and speculation. If you ask us though, this is bang on the money. Not long to wait and see...

Yes! The long awaited in game XMB with music!:dopey:

Even if its PS3 games only I don't mind if I can't play music in my ps2 and ps1 games via from the HDD.

FINALLY! Friends list and messages to them while you play your games!
As well I am excited about in background music. I wont use it as much, but i will from time to time. friends list is more important, as well managing audio device! :)

You all remeber playing GT4. You turn your music off to enjoy the pure race sounds.. then you find yourself in the middle of a 6 hour endurance race... but wait, you forgot to turn the music on! Now all you have to do is press the PS button, choose songs you wnat to play, and continue with the race! WOOT!

Wait how did Solid Fro and D-Nitrate get their profiles up there?
:sly:

yaywalter, thanks for sharing this new info. 👍

Speculation or not, here is my take on some of these new features:

  • Friend category (in game)
This is going to be very useful. 👍

  • View, send, receive messages (in game)
This is going to be even more useful... although I really wish they would add an option to the Notification Messages settings such that we would have an option to turn off just the "sign in/off" messages so that we can still get altered if we get a message or invite from a friend. 👍

  • Manage downloads (in game)
I guess what this means is if you are downloading several files while playing a game, we will be able to pause the game without quitting in the event we want to pause or cancel a file that is downloading or schedules to download? I guess that's OK, although I can't really see the need for it, but I'm all for giving us more options. 👍

  • Set the vibration feature of the controller
I don't understand what this means either. We have that already right, as far as turning it on and off from the game options menus.

  • Sign in to PlayStation Network
Now this could be useful for those that want to get a jump on downloading newly added content ASAP, and thus can regularly check the store without having to constantly quit and restart a game. 👍

  • Register friends
Again, I don’t really understand this feature as listed. I mean we can do that already, and we even have a list in our Friends category in XMB that allows us to add friends we have played online with.

  • Manage Bluetooth devices
I hope this will mean we will be able to register multiple Bluetooth devices and then simply pick which ones we want to use at any given time... as I am really tired of having to constantly re-register and pair up my Bluetooth headsets each time I switch from one to another. :ouch:

  • Terminate the game
Uh... don't we have that already... it's called press the PS button and select quit. :)

  • Music category
I guess I am one of the few that just don't understand the desire to be able to play your own music in a game. Then again, I'm the kind of player who almost always turns off the music option in the games I play. I much prefer to listen to the sound effects in a game, and not music.

  • Use the system BGM
    Not sure what this means.

  • Work the system BGM operation panel
    Ditto.

  • Settings category
    Huh?

  • Assign controllers
We have that option already as well.

  • View profiles
Now this will be very nice, especially if the PSN expands on the info and what you can put in your profile. Right now you are VERY limited to what you can have in your profile, making them pretty much useless.

  • Game category
Not sure what this means either... we already have that in the XMB.

  • Set audio devices
We have this option as well... these headings are far to vague don't you think?

  • Use the voice changer
We already have that option as well.

Clearly there needs to be more details on these "headings", but seeing as they are speculative, and not officially announced features, I guess that would be asking too much. :)

I really hope they include a fix for this retarded "error" connecting to the net in the next fix. I can't play RSV2 because I can't download the 1.20 "update" because it keeps erroring out. Thanks Sony.

BGM means Back ground music. Listen to music while you play

I understood the BGM part, but what is the system BGM?

The best guess I have regarding what that bullet point might mean is that perhaps it will be a new option to play BGM while simply navigating around the XMB.

If you are talking about the recent error message, that was simply because the network was down for recent fixes. Other wise, if you get error messages liek that, or have slow download speeds (as you have often say you do) then it has nothing to do with Sony but rather your own network. So you may want to thank either your ISP or your modem/router for your troubles. :indiff:

It isn't because my laptop or desktop would lose the connection at the same time then.

Also, when I start my PS3 and it connects it seems to make everything else disconnect and then reconnect. No, I don't usually have my computers on while I'm playing but then again it shouldn't matter...

Except if it's on Sony's server it should effect a lot more people then just you.

I have two desktops, three laptops and the PS3 all connected to the same wireless router and often more than two downloading and uploading at the same time, and yet unlike you, was able to download the latest update in just a few minutes... and based on other peoples posts, they to were able to download it just a few minutes.

If you're one of very few experiencing problems, it suggests the problem lies within your set up.

Sounds liek a router problem to me. Like a lot of people I've got loads of devices on my LAN and have never had a problem. You just need to make sure the right ports are open.
