They're actually kind of slow. If you are planning on keeping it stock, or near stock, I'd go with a 3.8 if you can afford it.

Bit too much money for the 3.8 but that would of be a cool car.

How is that Toyota Subaru FT-86 car?

I am planning on buying a bran new car around the price range around summer of next year, They should be out by then right?

Or maybe I should get normal 4 door car to have it set for the future? Too many choices.

Forgot to mention it has to be an Automatic... 5 or 6 speed that is good and maybe with paddle shifters sequntial and what not. I have never driven a manual car in real life. As well i want convineice to just put it in D and go

Then why are you looking for something fun to drive?

So sorry but learning to drive a manual is NOT HARD. If you have to, spend a grand on a beater with a 5-speed, sort out how to drive it, and go buy a stick. You'll break even due to the cost of ticking that little box that makes them build your car as an auto.

"Auto" and "fun to drive" don't go together in the same sentence...EVER.

Just because you don't know how to drive with a stick doesn't mean you can't learn. Once you do, you'll be able to drive 99% of the vehicles on the road and reach a new level of driving experience.

Think of it this way...What sounds like more fun...Lifting your foot up and done on the gas pedal as you hit the twisties, or slamming a clutch as you rip through the gears on a normal drive to work? Exactly.

Hey guys, what kind of car of a brand new car I can get in the USA for around 18-22k that is most fun to drive? Prforably RWD, AWD setup, but still name the FWD cars. If car is around 23 or even 24K but its work it, post it. And yes it has to be brand new, 2010,2011, even for future 2012.

The Genesis is going to be your best bet if you want a fun car within a good range. But, you need to be sure what kind of features you want. Hyundai played a smart game by keeping features locked pretty well to certain models.

But, then again, you might have made up your mind by wanting an Auto, as Hyundai has made sure that the sport models stay manuals & that if you really want the Track Package w/ Auto, you have to buy to the 3.8 & that's out of your range.

As for never driving manual, do so first before buying a car with one. Regardless of what anyone says, there is always a chance you'll buy a manual car & just end up not wanting to drive it due so. And don't listen to someone who says "Auto" & "Fun" can't be together.

I was just going to say "Waits for Joey to come in and defend autos."

Too late. In any case, not to say they aren't fun to drive as an automatic, but they will be more fun to drive as a manual. Frankly, as a personal experience coming from driving literally hundreds of different types of cars, automatics are just a frustration when trying to drive quickly. They aren't ever in the gear they need to be in, and if you're going to put it in sport mode and do it yourself, then just buy a manual. People seem to have this misconception that driving a manual car is a hassle when you've got to do it on a daily basis, when in reality, once you get used to it, it's almost subconscious and doesn't require any thought.

"Waits for rant about 'purists' and 'elitists'"

You know the best thing about the word, "fun" when it comes to cars? It's all opinion.

Nox, if you want to know how fun the car is, just drive it in the specs you're interested in. You're the one driving it, not us.

You know the best thing about the word, "fun" when it comes to cars? It's all opinion.
So you would honestly have more fun in an equivalent car if it was automatic as opposed to manual? Because unless you would, then we share the same opinion. As well as 99% of people when they are thinking of the criteria for making a car as fun as possible. I haven't met anyone that disagrees, but I'm leaving the 1% for an exception.

Also, if you notice, I specifically said that I'm not saying those cars aren't fun to drive with automatic transmissions.

My bros AMG is a AUTOMATIC with sequential that i can choose at any point. That car is WAY FUN to drive. It's also designed that this auto acts like a manual, so if you need fuel economy just use it softly, if you need speed and redline gear changes just push the gas pedal in aggressive way. Heck that car can be as fast as it's manual competitors with same specs of power.
Also, how come even race cars are loosing the clutches? now a days its a lot of sequentials? some race cars have to just lift the foot off the gas pedal to change gear, some dont have to.

Not to mention, how much pain in the butt it has to be sitting in traffic, stop and go, stop and go with manual, or how to park in uphill/downhill tight spots.

I want Auto because its very convenient, sure I bet its fun to press on clutch pedal, but I bet most times I wont be racing and having fun, just drive it to work and back, so I want comfort of the automatic as well. But at the same time I don't want an AUTO with 4 gears. I remember an article on the Volvo S60R. When they first came out the Manual was faster over the Automatic. But later they developed the Automatic to use 100% of the engine power and it turn out to be as good as the Manual, and it would never miss a beat, or mess up with downshifts. So sometimes automatics can be more fun since you can be focused more on actual driving.

Only time I have driven with clutch was in GT5 Prologue (as well other PC sims) I remember I went back to sequential mode because with sequential it's very hard to mess up shifting especially in online racing. But thats just me, but we all know its stupid to say AUTOS are not fun.

About the Hyundai 2.0T yeah they are bit slow after bit of research, and the MX5.. not enough power and for 170 ponies they should be super cheap. Is the mustang V6 with 300 HP is cheapest car out there with such high power? its cheaper then the V6 Hyundai Coupe!
For the price of standard V6 Hyundai Coupe I can get a Premium V6 mustang , even the Standard V6 mustang comes with Limited slip. I think its awesome buy. What you guys think?

Driving a manual is not a pain in day to day daily driving. I think the only time it would be a pain in a car is in very heavy traffic in a city. If I had to do it every day there's some chance I'd have an automatic car (though it'd probably be a cheap beater so that I could have my manual fun car). My first car was automatic. Second a six speed. And I'll always choose a manual if its available to me, unless I really fall in love with some flappy paddle dual clutch thing (doubt it).

And having a manual isn't limited to just being fun when you're ripping on it. It makes a daily commute more interesting. Its something else to keep you occupied, to keep you engaged with driving the car, rather than having a "go" and "stop" pedal. And I believe you're more aware of what's going on around you if you drive a manual.

Situations where I'd want an automatic:
Heavy city traffic
Off-road
Drag racing
Trucks
High powered V8 cruisers. Something like a GTO, Trans Am (I'd take a six speed or automatic for these), as well as the usual German uber-sedans (you don't really get the choice for most of these, but automatic seems fitting).

99% of those people are also idiots because they think a manual is funner in any car, without thinking.

It all depends on the car, & if the person is happy with it. After driving a Cayman w/ both transmissions, I personally prefer the PDK. Shifts are better, allows for much better control, etc. If someone enjoys the 6-speed, then more power to them. For me, I can tell the PDK is the choice to have if you really want to take advantage of what the car can do, & I prefer to have that advantage should I have the car on the track or during a fun run. Apply the same situation to my Si, & it's obviously no automatic would make this car perform any better.

As said, depends on the car.

You can't go wrong with both, but if you're going with an Auto, the Genesis is the better car to have it in. Automatic Mustangs are not fun cars. The transmissions are slow shifting and not the smartest at determining shifts. It's obvious Ford engineers designed Mustangs to take advantage of a MT.

I doubt the ford engineers had anything to do with it. It would have been a decision to use a automatic gear box that was already in the ford family to cut costs. I think the same reason applies as to why they are still using a Solid Axle rear end. They want to keep it cheap, as their market is lower end.

They would have been much better using a ZF 6 speed auto straight from the Australian FPV as its probably the most similar car still in the Ford Family that the Mustang can borrow from.

Edit: Oh and just because I'm from Australia doesn't mean I'm biased (to the ZF) because I'm actually from the enemy camp (GMH)!

The 6 speed auto for the 2011 Mustang V6 is a new thing. I need to find some reviews of the 6 speed auto to see if its worthy or not. Any reviews around the web yet of the auto?

I think I will buy a Manual car in the future. I would need one car for everyday driving, and one fun car.

But lets not get Auto vs Manual war. Lets just give me some good choices. Even normal cars that are still fun to drive like the 170hp Impreza, (but wont buy it since it only a 4 speed auto)

when in reality, once you get used to it, it IS subconscious and doesn't require any thought.

Corrections in bold.

It's also designed that this auto ACTS like a manual...

...

...if you need speed and redline gear changes just push the gas pedal in aggressive way. Heck that car can be as fast as it's manual competitors with same specs of power.

Last time I checked, pushing the gas pedal in an aggressive way is the opposite of what you want when driving any car properly "fast".

Also, how come even race cars are loosing the clutches? now a days its a lot of sequentials? some race cars have to just lift the foot off the gas pedal to change gear, some dont have to.

They're not "loosing the clutches." They have the same type of clutches they had before. Sequential transmissions in race cars are still manual transmissions in their fundamental form but are operated through different means. Just like a motorcycle transmission only requires up/down "shifter movements" to change gears. And the gears can be changed when the gears are not loaded with no clutch use (a simple slight release of throttle.) the clutch is still there. They are not automatic transmissions with gear change options.

Not to mention, how much pain in the butt it has to be sitting in traffic, stop and go, stop and go with manual, or how to park in uphill/downhill tight spots.

I have a manual Miata. I've driven it to New York City in the past and had to drive it around for a few days. I would agree it would not be the best idea to own a manual in a city such as NYC but even with that it wasn't bad. But I'm sure it would be if I was the typical entrepreneur going to my next meeting with a coffee in one hand and a phone on the other.

I want Auto because its very convenient...

But not because its as fun.

...sure I bet its fun to press on clutch pedal, but I bet most times I wont be racing and having fun.

So you're implying that the manual is indeed more/for fun?

So sometimes automatics can be more fun since you can be focused more on actual driving.

Isn't shifting part of driving? Either way it is subconscious just like steering. Or it wont be more fun because it's a slush box with nowhere near the control and feel that a manual provides and more often than not will stick you in the wrong gear for anything but steady cruising.

Only time I have driven with clutch was in GT5 Prologue (as well other PC sims)

Well maybe you should expose yourself to something before you decide to think which ones better.

99% of those people are also idiots because they think a manual is funner in any car, without thinking. It all depends on the car.

It is funner in any car and it all depends on their daily situation. If you live in Manhattan than a manual would be impractical.

After driving a Cayman w/ both transmissions, I personally prefer the PDK. Shifts are better, allows for much better control, etc.

Maybe the reasons shifts are better is simply because you're not very good at it. On the other hand I will agree with you if you were to say that shifts were consistent.
Nothing allows for better control than a direct connection from the engine to the wheels.

As said, depends on the car.

As I said, depends on the daily living situation.

Wow Speed Junkie, you are so biased.. give me some car ideas, dont rumble about it. Everyone has different views. Sure I say manuals with clutch can be just as fun, but at the same time for me AUTOS are fun because I am more focused on driving alone. Also its convenient in daily situations where traffic gets worse and worse! You probably live on a race circuit so you will blah blah blah and tell everyone is wrong because manuals are most fun..

But lets not get Auto vs Manual war. Lets just give me some good choices. Even normal cars that are still fun to drive like the 170hp Impreza, (but wont buy it since it only a 4 speed auto)
Because it's an after-thought design. Plus, a new AT Impreza will have you on a waiting list to get it; they're built to order.
It is funner in any car and it all depends on their daily situation. If you live in Manhattan than a manual would be impractical.
You've never driven my 5 in a manual, so you obviously need to rethink your statement.

Maybe the reasons shifts are better is simply because you're not very good at it. On the other hand I will agree with you if you were to say that shifts were consistent.

I know how to shift, thank you, seeing as I do own a Civic Si purely for fun driving. The PDK though, is designed for performance, so its shifts are lightning quick & designed to be smoother than anything a human can do. I shift just fine in the Cayman, but only a professional would be able to try & replicate the PDK.
As I said, depends on the daily living situation.
More than that.

I think it's hot when girls can drive a stick, but I still insist that I can do it better myself.

When I lived in the capital city of Norway (heavy traffic) I was considering an auto swap for my 82 then-daily, but shifting never really bothered me that much plus you can't beat clutch drop, sideways fun down a narrow gravel road, which I did a lot those days :)

I'd like a 3-speed cruiser.. Older Golf or a clean SoCal-driven Charade on 13s.. But I'm happy all my cars are manual..! Having said that, I owned a Merc 300D E-class for a while, being manual never suited it..

Booger car lives in shame after twister blister stole its wheels!

That would be normal automatic transmission behavior 💡

Also, how come even race cars are loosing the clutches? now a days its a lot of sequentials? some race cars have to just lift the foot off the gas pedal to change gear, some dont have to.

Mmmm point? When you spend upwards of 10 grand on a sequential box like those, they're faster that way than a normal manual. Thing is, manufacturers aren't going to put at least 5 grand of build cost into a friggin' transmission.

Not to mention, how much pain in the butt it has to be sitting in traffic, stop and go, stop and go with manual, or how to park in uphill/downhill tight spots.

Stop and go traffic is actually ridiculously easy with a stick... Especially if they're just crawling. You let the clutch out a bit, creep up, push the clutch back in, go to neutral, wait, go back to first, let it creep, etc etc etc

I want Auto because its very convenient, sure I bet its fun to press on clutch pedal, but I bet most times I wont be racing and having fun, just drive it to work and back, so I want comfort of the automatic as well.

It's not that it's "fun to press on clutch pedal", it's that you're making every single decision about how the car moves forward. With a manual transmission you have absolute control over how the car accelerates, how high it's revving, how fast/slow you shift, how smooth/firm you shift, what RPM you take off at, etc etc. With an automatic, at best, you have control over what gear you're in and therefore how high you let it rev, but you don't have any control over how it will shift or how long after you tell it to do something it actually does, nor any of the other variables.

4-speed autos are really not a bad thing... They limit the transmission's choice of rev ranges slightly compared to 5 and 6 speed autos but with a proper power plant it's no real worry (see Eric's list of cars he wouldn't mind an automatic in. GTO and Trans Am both had 4-speed autos and didn't care whatsoever that they were down a gear thanks to the powerband)

Only time I have driven with clutch was in GT5 Prologue (as well other PC sims) I remember I went back to sequential mode because with sequential it's very hard to mess up shifting especially in online racing. But thats just me, but we all know its stupid to say AUTOS are not fun.

Part of that is the PC sims not correctly modeling the use of the clutch and H shifter as there's still the delay going into the next gear programmed in regardless and you can't feel the engagement of the clutch through a G25/7 clutch pedal. Real cars are much more direct in both the shifter and the clutch.

As for autos being fun or not... I've not seen anyone say autos aren't fun, just that they aren't as much fun.

Mmm "not enough power" from the MX-5 huh? True if you saddle one with the automatic, not true if you get a stick. The automatic inherently reduces the power getting to the wheels as there's an extra pump to be driven along with quite a lot of fluids to move and higher friction. A manual transmission MX-5 will be more than sprightly; no demon by any means but definitely quick.

And yes, I do believe the V6 Mustang has one of the best power to money ratios out now, add the LSD and it's near perfect. Probably won't quite have the same poise as a Track model turbo 4 cyl Gen Coupe though. Just... Avoid the auto in either... Neither have the low-end torque to make up for it.

F it, after doing research on NEW cars, except the Stand, everything is weak on everything pretty much so I rather buy a USED Mercedes Benz or BMW. Now to the questions.. which one are worth looking at? 25k MAX. Also BMW offers free services brakes and oil changes for life right?

But seriously, you're looking at the new car market with $25,000, what do you expect? Sorry, but you're not going to find something with amazing performance besides the Genesis, Mustang, & Miata.

Yeah I agree. Too bad, I always want a new car, to own it, but seems its always better to buy used one since I am not a rich guy. Heck today I found a low milage for 13k a Lexus IS300 2002, not bad 👍
Also lots of nice luxury cars i can buy for 22 k with good milage.

This is where you should have been heading in the first place, especially if you want rear wheel drive. The new rear wheel drive segment is not exactly friendly at the $25k mark. Buying used is also a much better idea, as you let someone else take the car value depreciation hit. It is especially nice when you find a vehicle that is very low miles and virtually still brand new.

Another question to ask is, have you looked at insurance on any vehicles? I would not let insurance make or break buying a car. But I would take a serious look into it also, as the costs can be prohibitive, even on a used car.

Good point about the insurance, but it should not be that extra cash fro Mercedes Benz lets say, I own a OLD Mercedes right now, and my brother a AMG, both are very similar in price, and also my moms Nissan Altima 2001 is even more expensive then the two. If I don't crash, the insurance should be GOOD. I wont buy lets say a Hyundai over a Mercedes because Mercedes will be bit more to insure. In the end where I live and my family does not get terrible pricing. Sure I can't afford insurance for a Ferrari but for a used M-B its not too bad. So I have a lot of possibilities.

Correct. There is also a throttle-cut on some of them (on the gear leaver) so they don't have to lift off the throttle.

Then I was wrong about race cars :P haha

But they stilll dont have to press clutch with the foot ;) haha I mean the ones that dont have it.

Guys you are long way of topic, came here to see some cars HAHAHHA

Double Clutch concept like the PDK or the DSG are not pure AUTOMATIC, they are semi-auto, like in racing. Speed?? explained it correctly

No human can beat double clutch gearing. (best exemple :walter Röhrl, who particpates in creating porsches and WR holder of Pikes Peak).

Americans like their Automatics, and that is alright. We all are free ( i hope)
Europeans like their manuals, which is also alright (i'm pro manuel, manual rocks, clutching rocks, drifting with clutches rock)
