So jealous of the Z right now mate, how much did you pick it up for?

I am looking for one this year as a first car, its that or a 3rd gen liberty but to find a good z is around 7000AUD here...

Sorry to be so late to the party, but I would suggest no for the Z. Especially not for 7k.

I, too, was looking at 300ZXs when I was your age. Back then, you'd be looking at 13.5k for an example that had under 150000ks and semingly reasonable service history, but after searching for almost a year I concluded that every example from like $9-13k had something terminally wrong with it and to have a 300ZX which would supply a hint of care free, awesome Zededdness motoring would need about 20k - so I'm guessing around the 15k mark in today's standards.

On top of that I'm going to be all parently and say you don't need that much power in your first car (says the guy with an SV6 :P), insurance is going to be a bitch (even if you list it under your parent's name), it'll chew fuel and it will need attention, regardless of if it is Japanese or not - Its about 15yrs old. On top of that, if you intend to move out of home when you go into uni, a 4 door car is better so you can pile all your friends in to go somewhere - girls care more about how accessable the back seats are when they are drunk when you are being the designated driver than the fact that what you are driving is a class sports car from the 90s.

I can completely sympathise with why you want one. It means you drive a Nissan Z - one of the greatest line of sports cars in motoring history. You drive something with street cred that gets an appreciative nod from guys who know what they are talking about. You can rock up to school....in your Z. You are bored on the weekend, so you can go for a drive....in your Z....and all the rest of it. But really, just, no. It would be more trouble than its worth.

👍

I completely understand where you are coming from and I have thought about it all before. Its something I have wanted since a kid, a car from the famous Z line.
I understand that they can have problems, that insurance will cost me 2000 grand a year and that it is a powerful car that will eat the fuel as it goes in.
But thats half the fun, its a first car, a learning curve as such. If it has problems, I can gain knowledge and understanding towards the engine and all its counterparts.
My mind is almost set on one thing, the only reason I will not pull through with this is if I can't find one without problems which are too much for me at the time.

Thanks for putting in your two cents and all but I will remind you of this post when it all goes well (cocky 15 year old statement :P).

I don't think it'd chew THAT much fuel, but by today's standards..... I suppose it depends on how you judge.

Lol ahhh to be 15 again :P. And thats coming from a soon-to-be 20 year old - so I guess what I've learnt is that even in 4 and a bit years a lot can change lol. It all depends on your circumstances. I grew up through the teen years absolutely certain that I would rock an E30 coupe, MX5, 300ZX or a 205GTI as a first car, and I had the money to do so too. But after spending a year at uni a good 6 hour drive from my house in Wagga Wagga, I learnt that right now in life I want something big and lazy that eats the highways and is big enough to take all my crap and ferry friends around the place. Running a Commodore in the city is stupid and hence I wouldnt do it if uni was here - I'd probably rock the 205GTI. But can you imagine driving a 205 for 6 hours on the highway? Urgh!
Of course I had to get a car that somewhat satisfies my needs as a petrol head - hence the SV6 part. It has the FE2 suspention, and a pretty punchy engine to get me where I want to go when I want to get there.

As for working on your own car, again, I doubt it. You first car isnt a hobby. Its not something to tinker with after school should you have romantic visions of Wangan Midnights. You will want reliablilty and you will want to give it to someone else to fix for peice of mind that it wont crap out on you while you are driving it. I'd still love to have a car to tinker on, but if its my one and only and if you 🤬 it up badly, thats it. No car, no insurance claim, no asset.
I have two friends - one with an AE86 Sprinter and one with a 205GTI. Both guys are my age but are doing payed apprenteships meaning they have a pretty steady income so they can affort it. The guy with the AE86 has had to do that much work to his own car. He works at a family owned mechanic so its easy for him, but his car is generally off the road more than it is on. Its his only car so he keeps having to buy $400 rust buckets that are illegal and rubbish to get himself around while he works on his car. The guy with the 205 is currently putting an MI16 engine and g'box in it and it is going to be mentally bonkers. He's done it up really nicely. But it hasnt been on the road for over 8 months so he gets around in his mums tarago. They are awesome cars I'd love to have for a weekend, but day to day they kinda defeat the purpose what with them constantly yeilding problems, and thats before they start attracting the fuzz who are looking for things to defect.

I don't say this to crush your spirits. Not at all. You remind me a hell of a lot like me at your age with this whole attitude (and its kina eery :P). What I guess I am saying is keep your mind open for what life throws at you and how you may need to change/sacrifice a few things to make it all easier for you. 300ZXs will still be there in a few years shoud you decide to buy a sensible Pulsar or something for a few years first. I still have every intention of getting something stupid in the future, but now is not the time I spose. :) 👍

My 2002 bugeye WRX after a wash. Haven't really done anything to it yet apart from getting it tuned by HPF. Plan to get a CAI and a retune in a few weeks and would love to replace the headlights with some JDM STI ones.

300ZX started making a faint knocking noise today. :nervous:

Did some (by some I mean a lot, lol) spirited canyon driving last night. I'm crossing my fingers it's the VTC acting up like they do, but I have a gut feeling I'm starting to loose a rod bearing. Gonna go to the shop tomorrow and rig up my mechanical oil pressure gauge. Then drain/strain the oil and cut the filter open, see if I have any copper in it. FML. 👎

JDM STi's are nice. If you clear out the orange it wouldn't look too bad as the car is silver, and it'd be pretty much free. Nice ride, always been more partial to the wagons in that body style though. Love seein' the wagons dust people...

^^ He's totally right. I was in exactly the same mindset as you way back when I was looking for my first car. Decided to just put up with the 80s Vitara I got handed down, and it was a great decision. Car got me from A to B no trouble, was manual, and has served me well until now...but since I now have a full time job I can afford a proper car. The last thing you want when you're on your Ps is a car which will be a constant work to get running. Those Zs you're looking at are more likely than not beat to hell and will fall apart after a few thousand Ks max. Not too fun!

I don't believe that you own that many cars. I mean who would want to own 3 Eagle Talons never mind one.

I most certainly do own all of these vehicles. It's not like they are 6 figure cars. I was in a motorcycle accident on my way to work in 2002. I was cut off on the Taconic state parkway and suffered a compound fracture to my right leg that resulted in several weeks in the hospitol and a severed nerve hat has left me without any feeling in the skin from my knee to my toes. I've gone through a lot of pain and frustration over the last 8 years and I was compensated for that. So I went ahead and bought a few cars that I had my eye on. It's not fun living on workers compensation. So when I recieved my settlement check I have to admit I went a little spending crazy. But I think I deserved it. My bills are up to date,I don't have any kids,so I think I'm entitled to buy myself what I want.

Yeah I mean, afterall, the 4G63 was a TERRIBLE engine.

Thats the most un-informed comment I've ever read. The 4g63 is one of the most potent and durable DOHC 4 cylinder motors ever built. Strong Cast-iron block, good flowing aluminum head, EFI, quick spooling TD05-14B Mitsubishi turbo. The only problem the DSM's ever had centered around the drivetrain. Which does'nt become an issue until you start dipping into the low 11's and start playing with aftermarket clutches. Most issues came from using a very heavy duty single disc clutch. Most issues have been avoided now a days by utilizing twin disc setups. This greatly reduces the blow to the driveline and ultimately leads to a much longer life for the drive parts. (Axles,gearboxes,transfer-cases,differentials)
I've owned over a dozen since 1995. Why would I want to own more than one? Because for very little money I've spanked all kinds of Vette's, Porsche's, Lambo's,Ferrari's, crotch rockets and imports on the track, off the track, and in my wallet. I'm not the type that gets a lump sum of cash and goes out and buys an exotic. I'm the type that builds his own toys and for a lot less cash than these overpriced exotics and so called "super cars" than beats the p i s s out of them wth a car that came with a sticker price of under $30,000.
Lets see. I ran 11.03 in my 93' Talon TSi on pump gas and 10.66 @ 137mph on C-16. Don't believe it? Go to www.dsmtimes.org and see for yourself.
I've also spent $1,500 total to make a 91' Talon TSi AWD run 11.90's @ 120mph. And at the moment I have a 92' that has gone 9.41 @ 151. Come summer the car will be laying down over 1,000whp and putting down 8 second passes.

Now I ask the question, what do you drive?
