I don't get this. Sure, Mattrick still works there (though I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was thrown on a sword as an olive branch) so all the inane and obnoxious stuff he said is still the division's opinion, but they still reversed a major corporate decision when they didn't have to (and, since it is Microsoft, rarely do). This is what people wanted, yet when Microsoft decides to do it, screw them anyway.
How long ago was it where everyone was assuming Sony would be doing the same things that Microsoft was trying? Not even a week before E3 people were still so deathly afraid of it that there was a massive push from GAF to appeal to Sony directly over the issue. I would even bet money that Sony fully intended to do the same until they were presented with the perfect marketing condition Microsoft presented them with after all the bad press. Remember the mess that happened with OtherOS? Remember Kutaragi's infamous "we want people to get a second job" statement in response to the PS3's original price? Or the mess a bit before that where they justified that people didn't want backwards compatibility in the PS3 right before announcing PSN Classics? The mess with the hack attempt which, while outside of their control, they still felt fit to hide from the public at first rather than try to get everything under control?
Yet people still trust Sony well enough.
