Chinese commentary only. The SRO GT Cup, a new category for GT4 cars in China, has attracted a bumper entry of 33 cars for its inaugural races this weekend at Shanghai International Circuit.
Announced last December, the SRO GT Cup is a single-driver series with a calendar made up of seven races across four rounds, the first two of which feature on the support bill for this weekend’s Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai.
Further rounds will then be held at Zhuhai and on the new Beijing Street Circuit in support of this year’s GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS event in October, while the Greater Bay Area GT4 Cup in Macau serves as the finale in November.
No fewer than 10 manufacturers will be represented at Shanghai for what SRO claims to be the largest grid of GT4 cars to have ever been assembled on Asian soil.
Mercedes-AMG is the best represented marque with seven cars, followed by Porsche with six and Toyota with four, while the grid also features machinery from Audi, BMW, Ginetta, Lotus, McLaren, Aston Martin and KTM.
A total of 31 cars across three classes of competition, Silver, Pro-Am, and Am, will be awaiting the drop of the green flag to commence their 2025 campaigns, all vying for their first podiums of the season. This also marks the beginning of a new Global GT4 Manufacturers Championship format, featuring a refreshed points system. Six of the eight global manufacturers in contention will be present within the American division of the championship.
“There’s already been great acceptance, especially through Andrew Miedecke, to have the Mustang GT4 here, and I think we’re approaching eight Mustang GT4s,” he said.
A record-breaking field of 31 cars will grace the famous Victorian circuit during the first Shannons SpeedSeries event for the year, with a diverse range of returning stars, race winners and new faces making up the entry list.
In addition to the impressive cast of driving power set to get the season underway is the number of manufacturers to feature throughout the season, with eight different brands locked in for Phillip Island.
Many of the regular brands will return for the series’ second full season, including BMW, Ginetta, McLaren, Ford, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche. However, the new arrival of Toyota has been one of the major talking points in the off-season, with two cars entered for the season opener.
