PS3 General Discussion

Maybe Jordan can increase just the .zip file size to 300k for PlayStation game saves only. Starting a thread for only ultimate game saves can be something that could attract new people to the forum looking for certain game saves.

Does the PS3 have the function of digital partitioning within the HDD? Just a thought.

When you install "OtherOS", i.e. Linux, yes. Not sure what you mean by 'digital' as it's all zero's and one's. There is no Analog process to partitioning a hard drive, it's all digital. ;)

Alright, here's a GT4 saved replay. It's just me bashing my way through the track. The file directory is how it saved it on my Memory Stick.

So, has anyone had problems with their PS3s yet, or even heard of anyone having any problems? You know, things like overheating, freezing, etc.

It's interesting to know because I don't really want to be plagued with problems like with the 360. We're on our 3rd replacement already.

Sweet, I'll check it out once I get home :) I was looking forward to sharing one of my replays though :( I think I had a really good one that was amazingly close at the end, very exciting to watch, lol (not the best racing though).

Not many, any cases are isolated and few and far between, nothing near as bad as the 360, or even the PS2 for that matter.

My system runs very stable. Some members on GTP ran their PS3's for over 70 hours IIRC, with a possible single freeze up I think? Very very stable system, the build quality is immaculate.

Wow! this ability to share files now over the web with ease it great! if you were stuck on a level you could put it on the net, someone could kindly do it for you then send it back to continue playing..... also shaing maybe future settings (thinking GT) and maybe even custom paint jobs!

:)

I have my PS3 sitting on top of my Dish Receiver. I had my PS3 freeze up twice until I figured out that the Dish Receiver was cranking out some heat underneath the PS3. I haven't had it lock up once now that I leave the Dish receiver turned off during PS3 play. I am going to relocate the PS3 soon. No problems since.

    HOW COULD YOU!!! Put such a piece of electronic god-ness on such a thing as a dish reciever! It deserves to sit on a diamond cut platform that rotates!

No but seriously I wouldnt be stacking it on anything because all the heat from the stuff below will rise up..... it should be on its own in the room away from other stuff on a shelf that sits below all the other stuff...

Overheating in the UK is not an issue! :nervous:

It is for me.

Air conditioning FTW.

I know, I know..... I'm working on getting it setup the way I want. I need a few more cables before I can set it up the way I really want. :)

I don't know. It was one of the hottest summers on record in the UK this year. But it's no Arizona! Got to keep equipment away from central heating though.

The only problems I've heard of are one or two disc drive faults (not loading/taking discs), one or two dead ones (red light and beeps but no start up) and a few niggling issues like a weak wireless signal and HDMI. But I think most gripes are users not getting their heads around the technology (got to the US PS3 forum to see what I mean). From what I've read the PS3 looks a more complicated piece of hardware than the 360. I don't know if that's a good thing or not but it certainly means more options and stuff to tweak and play around with!

Here's a little rundown for you.

The disc drive faults and dead PS3's have happened, in VERY isolated incedents. Sony, however, has replaced this in an extremely timely manner, some in as little as 5 days, others around 7-10.

The wireless signal has more to do with peoples Wi-Fi set up than the signal strength of the PS3. Wi-Fi in itself is very tempermental. I have had my PS3 set up in my room, 40 feet away from my Wi-Fi router, and the signal was fine. When I visted my parents over the holidays, I connected via Wi-Fi from their router in their basement, through a concrete floor, and it was fine. But, on the flip side, my parents have a very nice wireless network setup. I wouldn't expect users with Wireless-B routers to get too good of a signal, and Wireless-G users should configure their routers accordingly, i.e. WEP, DMZ accounts, Static IP's, and adjust the MTU etc to maintain a consistent connection. Granted, there is an auto setup, but it's very poor, and anyone with a Wi-Fi network who uses auto setup is going to get a poor signal anyway.

Really, the PS3 isn't "more complicated" however it may require you to be a little more tech saavy for some things (like Wi-Fi) however, the 360's wireless adapater ($100) is the same, and has the same issues if not manually setup.

I recall someone talking about Madden 360 v PS3, and I have to say...

The PS3 version shines IMO.

With more accurate stadium lighting (i.e. Shadows cast at 4:25 instead of 1pm) and significantly improved Jersey Details (I remember someone saying you couldn't see the fabric etc, which isn't true). The Jersy Details in the PS3 version benefit from improved normal mapping, so details like shadows, wrinkles, and folds come out a lot better on the PS3 version.

The addition of more presnap animations and sequences, as well as improved post play animations make this version shine a lot more than the 360 version IMO.

The PS3 may like scratched discs better than 360

Nothing's important really, but it's nice to know.
One of the advantages of Blu-ray is the proprietary disc coating it uses. It is said to be as much as ten times more resistent to to scratches then standard DVD and HD DVD, both of which use the exact same disc coating technology designed over ten years ago.

At CEDIA the Blu-ray Disc Association held a demonstration that included an opportunity for audience members to run a screwdriver over a demo disc and then pop it back in the player and it played without any problems. It was quite impressive, but I wouldn't recommend making it a habbit of scratching your discs with steel tipped tools. :)

BTW: I just read the latest NPD sales report, and it appears XB360 sales are well below expectations and earlier estimates. This means any hope of Microsoft selling 10 million units by the end of the year is not going to happen. Now they may still be able to "ship" 10 million, but with sales currently at only 3.4 million in the US (estimated 4.6 million world wide), that's going to mean a whole lot of XB360's in warehouses. Miscrosoft has also only sold 42,000 (1% of instal base) of HD DVD add-ons.

3.4 million XB360's is still a very nice lead to have in regards to market share. Until Sony is able to ramp up production to meet demmand it will be hard to tell how much ground Sony will be able to make up from their late start.

Million Dollar Question: Will titles like Fatal Inertia (which were originally developed on PS3) look better or worse on the 360 since they are being ported?

Time will tell. In the mean time, here is a current shot of Fatal INertia, which is stunning IMO.

Yeah I keep all my electronics well away for central heating but I doubt it gets to like 34 degrees or something!

I could not tolerate watching that for more than 2 minutes. That guy was soooo annoying. lol

This vid is good because ive been waiting for someone to test this so called region free gaming! I think we know US and Japan are compatable but I want someone to test UK games on a Japaniese console, which wont happen for a while.

The problem is the guy in the vid! OMG is he super slow or something..... does he have to repeat himself over and over...... what a dumbass! Talk about stating the obvious, he seemed to be obessed with the fact he can see Japaniese!

First thing that comes to mind when I saw that pic was its motorstorm but in jets! Probably the same damn canyon!

Umm, first of all, there's almost 8.5 million 360s sold worldwide, not 4.6. Second of all, if Sony by the year's end has sold 500,000 PS3s worldwide, and the 360 sells 9 million (and that's a conservative estimate), the 360 will have an 8.5 million lead.

My guess is that it'd probably look the same, maybe a bit worse, since it's a port.

FA looks pretty good, almost a blend of podracing and F-Zero.

Citation please.

That 8.5 million figure was from Microsoft on shipped, not sold XB360s... and even that figure is in doubt consider they had claimed to have shipped only 6 million back in October despite sales tracking figures at less than half that and plenty of units still on store shelves.

More importantly, current sales tracking figures aren't even close to that. US sales of XB360 account for more than 75% of all sales (2006Q3 NPD report), and they know for a fact that only 3.4 million XB360 have sold in the US. By comparrsion, three years ago, during the same amount of time, Microsoft claimed to have sold over 9 million of the original Xboxes.

"If" Microsoft has in fact "shipped" 8.5 million XB360, then there are a few million sitting on shelves and in warehouse around the world.

Pretty much, just google "sold 6 million xbox 360s" and you'll find pertaining to this everywhere.

As for the 8.5 million current sales...

http://nexgenwars.com/

It's an estimate, but it's definitely very accurate. Not 100% mind you, but when MS announced their 6 million number back in September they were about 10,000 units off.
