PS3 General Discussion

Just updated to version 1.5 of the firmware. Nothing much to talk about. I did notice that if you have a friend that is waiting confirmation to be added cough*omnis*cough, it will say so under their username on your friends list.

I don't understand how that is "modding". Woohoo, you put a 750GB HDD in an external enclosure and hooked it up to the PS3. Congratulations!

Or not. ;)
I said it will be a while, before we see a 1TB 2.5 inch HDD sold to the public. Anyway I hope Sony get this official European Price and Date out real soon for today.

Has anyone had games crashing for the PS3? Not demos but full, finished games. I ask because out of all the 360 games I've played (and you're looking at around 30+) at least half crash (Oblivion was terrible for crashing untiul it was patched). Some of them pretty frequently (I recently got a snooker game and it crashes at least once a day - it's not even pushing the 360 like GoW does and that's not crashed once). I just wonder if PS3 games may be a little bit more reliable.

Probably not. I'm sure it's just down to how well a game's been developed. But I know that out of my current library of 20+ games for the PS2 none of them suffer from crashing. Many of the Xbox games I played seemed reliable too. But 360 games...too many. So, how are PS3 games holding up?

It's because the 360 was overheating may be?

Nah, not overheating just bad coding I think.

For us Europeans best go to www.threespeech.com at midnight GMT to get the official launch details. I'd assume it includes price, PS3 SKU (just 60GB I believe) and games available at launch. It would be nice to see if Sony say how many PS3's they're going to ship. Guesses start at 450,000....

Doesn't the 360 run some form of Windows? That is your answer.

Seriously, I fear that the new online abilities of all the new systems is going to lead to more of this. Just think about it, you had a patched version of Oblivion on a console. My favorite thing about console gaming was that a patch wasn't required because there was no downloading, so developers had to be sure to give you a near perfect game. They would have some bugs, but rarely was there anything that would ruin a game, like crashing. If there was word got out fast and no one bought the game until it was fixed and re-released. Now devlopers can be as lazy as PC games are because you can just download the patch.

Heck, the PS3 may not have game issues yet, but we are already on v1.5 of the firmware. $600 better deliver a near-perfect system because I can't upgrade chips and drives and memory and motherboards, etc. the way I can a PC.

Resistance: Fall of Man has crashed on me 3 times during multiplayer - Don't know why.

The nicest thing about consoles is that you don't HAVE to buy new chips & drives & memory & motherboards. All the games will be played on exactly the same hardware. Same hardware = much easier to beta test & debug.

When you say "crashed" do you mean froze online, or you got dropped from the network.

Right, but it should come in near-perfect condition and debugged before it ever hits store shelves, because I do not have the ability to change things for the better. I don't think I should have that ability because of what you said above, but that puts the responsibility on the hardware and software manufacturers to make it work properly, not need to be upgraded and patched.

With online we still have the limits of a console as far as our ability to fix it goes, but developers have allowed themselves slack.

Does this mean you can only do network things on the ps3 when you hardwire it, such as the firmware and demos ?As wireless is really my only choice 👎
Your post is in reference to a statement that I made two days ago. I just got through downloading Firmware Update 1.5 through a wireless connection from about 40 feet and through several walls, and it worked perfectly! Some folk on here had complained in the last day or so that the network was down for a while, and it seems to me that Sony used this downtime to make significant improvements to the system.

I was disappointed when FF XII, and Tales of the Abyss did not look very good when played on the PS3, but unless I'm dreaming, they seem to look better now on the PS3 than they did when played on the PS2. I am very pleased with the improvements to the graphical issues and I just hope that Sony can settle matters so that we can get FFB for GTHD and the future GT5.

Im Dl'ing the 1.5 update as I type this. Not sure what ill notice thought

:::::::::::::::::

I got my plantronics 320 bluetooth headset. Waiting for it to charge and the update to finish to see how its gong to work

The update fixes BC issues and some network issues. Also adds some user customization features.

The hard disks on my PC failed last night and now my PS3 has become my main device. For the most part, I can do everything I would have done on my now dead PC. Adding a wireless keyboard makes it so much easier.

I think a couple of Mac Minis and dual boot Windows Vista are in order for myself :)
Yay! I'll send you a PM for some tips soon. :)
Well, there you go then.. hehe. I stand corrected. Probably just older pictures (they're from before launch, I kept them because they're stupid-high-res, they probably changed it after the pics were taken.. hell, for all I know, they might be CGI.. they have that look about 'em). :)
Yeah, they are. If they weren't you'd see Ken Kutaragi and the words "The PS3 will run at 120fps in the 4D!" ;)
Apparently this firmware update fixes compatibility problems with old PSone and PS2 games, and no more jaggies on them anymore.

It does. Thank god. My 8-year-old PS1 demo disc looks better.

I'm thinking it's your 360. On my first 360, many more games froze, but now, with my second 360, only Need for Speed games (go figure )freeze up occasionally.

As for PS3 problems, I've had absolutely none. Nothing. 100% bug free.

It's because the 360 was overheating may be?
It's not that. When it overheats the lights in the ring of light flash red in random quadrants.
Doesn't the 360 run some form of Windows? That is your answer.
 👍

EDIT: Also, I'd like to point out my downloads aren't broken anymore. 👍

Firmware v1.5 fixes problems with PS2 games when viewed on HDTV's via component and HDMI, very sweet indeed!

Awesome! I can start playing MGS3 online and Black. Both looked bad on the PS3, but MGS3 online was worse. Much worse!

Too bad I'm too busy doing my guitar restoration to play with my PS3. :grumpy:

Okay, European launch details.

http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=264

Instead of carving this up into a news story, we thought Three Speech regulars would rather get to see the press release verbatim:

STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY 24th JANUARY GMT

PS3 to Launch in UK on 23rd March 2007
Over 30 Titles for Launch Period
1 Million units forecast for Initial European Launch Period

London, 24 January 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

Announcing the launch details, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, “Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.”

Looks real good, but where's Rainbow Six?

Just like the PSP launch the PS3's Euro titles are much better than the U.S. Thats a good reason the system may sell more over there than in the U.S. They dont have to sit on one game to get that next great game fix. They get so many titles off the bat.

It is sort of like the chicken and the egg paradox. At least the US and Japanese market got to have it early and play some games and movies on it, and it isn't like they are getting games before the US market. :)

OK, so I'm not a big gamer like I was in my youth, but I would like to get some games so I'd love to get some advice from you all.

What I do not like are first person shooters, and arcade style games.

What I really like are simulator games, and driving and flying games. I also really like puzzle games... like how the Myst series was for the PC. I also like mystery/thriller games like the Silent Hill series.

I'd really like to start experimenting with online gaming, so games that have good online suport would be a big bonus.

While normally I do not like arcade games, I do think I'll be picking up Motorstorm, only because at least it offers some decent driving experiences, and it could be a lot of fun online!

I also think I'll be getting the F1 Championship Edition as I have been a big fan of F1 for a very long tme.

I'd really like to get some good Rally racing games!

I know the reviews have not been great for Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWll, but I am still tempted only because it seems like the only flying game currently available. When ever a PS3 Ace Combat game comes out I'll be ALLLLLL over that!

I'll probably pick-up Tiger Woods golf, although I think it would only make me want to turn the PS3 off and go hit a few with my golfing budies. How is the online play for that game?

No free Blu-ray movie? Shame... Hoping for Casino Royale but I guess that wouldn't have been good business sense giving that away free.:dunce:
1 million for launch!? Well, launch "period". What's that, 2 months? If there's around 100,000 to 200,000 PS3's for the UK then that's cool. Won't satisfy everyone but hopefully they'll keep coming, unlike the 360 which virtually vanished for 2 months.

I'm pretty sure that Sony is poised for success now. We'll see what the world wide sales numbers look like in May...I'm going to guess Sony has an installed user base of around 2.5 Million by May, at a minimum.

I tested a few games and now all games are forced 480p. Some games like GT4 and Burnout Revenge that have 480p options booted in 480i. GT4's menus were 480i and now they are 480p. Burnout only used 480p when selected but now is forced. GT4's 1080i mode looks better for some reason. Killzone was the worse example before and now its looks better than the PS2 version thanks to proper 480P before it was 480p but it look down right awful, it got better with 1.3 but now 1.5 fixes it. Things just appear a little blurry.

More testing coming up MGS3 and Front mission 4.

Well, there's the GTHD demo for simulators... Motorstorm and F1, maybe RR7 are good racers... and Sudoku is about as good as you get for puzzle games.

I'd really like to start experimenting with online gaming, so games that have good online suport would be a big bonus.
Well, Resistance has great online, though it's an FPS. Motorstorm should also have good online, and Burnout 5 whenever it comes out.

I'd really like to get some good Rally racing games!
Colin McRae comes out in June (with the most photorealistic graphics EVER).

I know the reviews have not been great for Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWll, but I am still tempted only because it seems like the only flying game currently available. When ever a PS3 Ace Combat game comes out I'll be ALLLLLL over that!
Ace Combat + Next-Gen Power + Sixaxis = goodness. And for the love of god, rent Blazing Angels.

How is the online play for that game?
Judging from other EA Sports titles, probably crappy.

If they ship and sell a million then they'll have a 2.55 million install base, plus how ever many they sell in the US and Japan from now until May.

World Wide Sales through 1/15/2007

(.xx) = average per month since launch

North America:
  • 5.18m 11/22/05 (.38) XB360
  • 1.48m 11/19/06 (.74) Wii
  • 0.94m 11/17/06 (.47) PS3
Japan:

  • 0.61m 11/11/06 (.30) PS3
  • 0.33m 12/10/05 (.02) XB360
Other:

Nintendo Wii sales rates are truly impressive!

Nintendo Wii sales rates are truly impressive!

That's what I'm thinking. If you asked me several months ago, I would've thought you could walk into a store weeks after Christmas and pick one up easily. The PS3 would sell out, and be that way until at least March.

Guess I was wrong.

Duck, thanks for all the recommendations!

Sudoku is about as good as you get for puzzle games.
I may be the only person on earth that doesn't get giddy over Sudoku puzzles. ;) The kind of puzzles I most enjoy are problem solving engineering type... which is why I enjoyed the Myst games so much. 👍

Colin McRae comes out in June (with the most photorealistic graphics EVER).
Thanks for the heads up. I'll be picking this up as soon as it comes out!

Ace Combat + Next-Gen Power + Sixaxis = goodness. And for the love of god, rent Blazing Angels.
:) I know, I know... but it may be a long time before any other flying ga,e is available... I'll try and resist for a little more longer. :D

EA really does seem like they lower the bar rather than raise it, or is that being unfair? It just seems like they spend more time and money on buying exclusive rights to sports titles then they do on development. Thus, with little competition, they aren't exactly motivated to push the envelope on creating better games.

No problem. :)

Well, you're spot on. NBA 2K7 absolutely plays much better than any of the Live games, Madden 07 only features a new gimmicky feature and updated rosters, etc. I think one game to watch out for is MLB 2K7. It looks extremely realistic...

Also, has anyone noticed how refined the web browser has become? Moving the pointer is faster, and when you use the D-Pad to move by links, it visibly moves there, instead of suddenly appearing there.

In one day, Sony has solved a lot of problems and niggles. However, there's another temporary niggle.

My XMB looks like piss!

I much preffered Visual Concepts' NFL 2K series as well.

I always felt Monster Games' NASCAR HEAT, and then NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona were far better games than any of EA's NASCAR games, even today... and HEAT is over five years old already! Go figure. Unfortunately, like NFL 2K, EA has monopolized NASCAR games, and the "HEAT" series was forced to end in 2002. 👎
