PS3 General Discussion

Flow has co-op play. It's pretty cool to have your friends over to play and have two fishies going on at the same time.

I wish Tekken looked just as good as VF5 does. :indiff:

Well, you can't give a polished turd an excellent score. Heck, there's like a 45% review average on GameRankings (even though there's only 2 reviews so far), and that can't be a good sign.
I havn't played it other than the demo, but come on Duck... you should know that taking an average from only two reviews is nearly meaningless. Instead of saying "even though", you should have said "although". In other words, to say that it can’t be a good sign based on only two reviews is absurd at best.

After all, The Godfather, considered by many film critics and fans to be the greatest film ever made, and is ranked accordingly on IMDB with an average rating from users at 9.1 (out of 10), and yet despite this, over 12,000 users also gave it a rating of 1... Obviously if the first two votes were from those that gave this film a rating of 1, you would have been very foolish to have jumped to the conclusion that this was a bad sign for this film.

The point should be obvious, average ratings only mean something when you have LOTS of reviews that are included in the average.

That being said, although I have only played the demo, I would say from what I have seen so far and from the many F1 games I have played on the PS2, it is the best Formula 1 game I have played so far.

I think it's more important which games are or are not compatible. Major franchises like Tekken, Final Fantasy (particularly the recently released FFXII), Resident Evil etc need to be backwards compatible. But if the ones we're losing in the EU are small fry then it's not a problem. I would guess there are fewer games for the PS2 in the EU then Japan or the US anyway. I guess we need to wait and see.

That's bad news, but atleast the situation will improve over time, as firmware updates are made available, making more PS2 games playable on the PS3 in future.

Bad news. I was hoping to eventually sell one of our PS2s in the future as the PS3 will take over, but now it will have games that may not work (I sure hope GT4 does...), I'll have to keep the darned thing.

That's a huge blow.

While I was never intending to get rid of my PS2, I was hoping to relegate it to my Little Bro's room like the PS1 is currently (we just had a huge Fifa 99 revival! ).

There'll be updates for PS2 games on the PS3 though, just like the 360 does (or did - when was the last Xbox game to be made BC?). But I've aslo heard a rumour that Sony are working on making PS2 games play in 720p/1080i/1080p via patches etc (Tekken 5 already does but that was Namco's effort for download). Anyway, all my PS2 games are from the US (even though I live in the UK). It does'nt bother me personally.

YET.

Chances are, since this is a cost-cutting measure, that same BC limitation will make its way into US and Japanese PS3s shortly after the European launch.

You're fine if you already own a PS3. But if you're going to be getting one "eventually" or if your current system craps out and has to be replaced, you might end up somewhat screwed.

Personally, I seriously doubt that will ever happen. If anything Sony will likely be making subtle improvements to the PS3 over time just as they did with the PS2.

For those in Europe, before getting all upset I think it would be a good idea to see a confirmed list of all the hardware differences between the European PS3 and North American and Japanese versions. Software is irrelevant as it can be easily updated at no cost to Sony or their customers.

In addition, before lighting the torches, maybe it would be a good idea to see a confirmed list of what PS2 games are not compatible.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is mostly a software issue due to PAL video, and once Sony is able to resolve these software issues, updates will be posted for PS3 owners.

However, from what I can tell it appears there is very little in the way of confirmed facts on this issue. Hopefully this will change as more facts are discovered and/or released.

And let's not forget that at least you guys are going to have a broader selections of games to purchase from launch date. We didn't and we kinda had to keep playing PS2 tittles for a while. Yes they are more expensive but it's not like you won't have any options.

Nevertheless, I feel sorry that some PS-PS2 tittles won't be played in the PS3, specially if you like some of those games. Although I really doubt Gran Turismo or Final Fantasy or sport games won't be played on it because those are pretty much the most popular ones. :)

I know its not a huge blow with the EU backwards compatibility thing (im sure lots of people will keep their ps2's) but its still annoying that you pay double for something thats not the same as the rest of the world! This is why I am buying my PS3 abroad were it does play most of the old games and im just hoping the region free stuff they said was right!

Sheesh, you all act like most of your games won't work and the sky is falling. $10 says there's going to be 200 games that won't work normally like on US systems, and 98% of those games will be dippy oddball Japanese games.

Not to mention that since they're going with the emulation route, you guys will probably get your BC games in 720p/1080i with a good amount of anti-aliasing.

.........for double the price!

Time to get a new calculator.

JP = ¥59,980 = £252 : x2 = £512
US = $600 = £306 : x2 = £612
UK = £425

Besides, currency exchanges and import fees will always affect pricing. If you don't like it take it up with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

That said, even if you bought the PS3 in the states for $600 (£306), after the shipping and import taxes how much of that $233 (£119) savings would be left over? Doesn’t seem like it would be worth the effort.

No, I am merely highlighting that it is unfair for the UK to pay such a high price. As for the double the price bit I was talking about it being compared to the Japaniese price of 95,980 yen which is £252 pounds... so that is about double. I know importing it and adding tax all would probably not make it viable but I am not suggesting importing, I am just saying its unfair as it is to ask such a high price, and then to remove features adds insult!

But even still, that's not close to double.

£252 x 2 = £504. £504 - £425 = £79 difference.

And Sony doesn't think about what the consumer wants if it contradicts their bottom line. For them, leaving out the EE+GS (PS2 hardware) in all Euro PS3s saves them $27,000,000. I'd do the same thing.

But hey, in the end, your games will all probably be backward compatible and get 720p upscaling and AA thrown in. And then we'll be singing Sony's praises and sell our PS2s and throwing a Ferrari around a track in GTHD.

It's not like the PS3's backward compatible games catalog got slashed in half.

Well, he could be making a trip to Japan or the US to buy one... or have a friend to do it for him...
That's importing... unless he plans on also keeping it in the same region it was bought in. :)

So much for your crying.

With the onslaught of websites like this (no offense, me!), people have grown more and more impatient with things like release dates, prices, promise fulfillment, hype, flaming, along with numerous other things. The other day, we posted about the European PS3's getting a hardware "downgrade", meaning that there's simply less hardware and more software-involved computing. If you scroll down the comments, it's kind of funny how it starts out at "less backwards compatibility for a short while? Oh no!" and near the end people are saying "why did PS3 scrap backwards compatibility completely? We're screwed!" This is not the case.

1UP took the time to get in touch with some of Sony's henchmen and do a bit of the complaining for the web-surfing crowd. Why the lack of certain bits of hardware? Simple: "This move is a part of our cost saving measures, similar to the wide variety of cost saving measures we have applied with both the original PlayStation and with PS2. In time this leads to a reduction in the cost of manufacture and over time allows us to reduce the cost of the PS3 to consumers." Sony is doing all they can to stop selling at a loss so they can instigate a price drop. Already. Because the internet spreads pricing complaints faster than a wildfire in a rainforest.

What isn't talked about much is that the backwards compatibility issue is very temporary. Most of your PS-One titles are going to work. Recent PS2 titles will work. Older PS2 titles will be added through software updates in a matter of months. It's temporary, guys. Very temporary and not a big deal. Unless, of course, you'd rather not see a price drop for over a year...

^^^^ Excellent link. I read that part the first time i saw the news. But the way the media creates their headlines is just twisting the facts. Like all the guys upset in this thread. Full emulation was talked about a long time ago, when rumors started about the first run of ps3 would have the EE/GS but soon after it would be removed, thats exactly whats happening. Also this new software emulator could be the start of downloadable Psone games playable on Ps3 plus 720p upscaled AA ps2 games like duck mentioned. Europe is not getting the short end of any stick because this will follow globally with Sonys effort to reduce costs. The hacked verison of Sony's PSP's official ps1 emulator played pretty much every game.

PS3 littered with problems
A fix for all coming shortly

Really? Then someone hijacked your GTP account:

My situation is different because when im on holiday I will pick one up and bring it back, if it is truely region free then the games in the UK will work (I don't really care about Blu Ray movies or DVD's at the moment).....

.....Don't just assume I contradicted myself.

That's still importing, only instead of paying for a company to ship it, you'll be doing it yourself. Importing is the action of bringing a good, service, or capital from one country to another. So yes, you did contradict yourself... without anyone needing to make any assumptions.

Also, last time I checked, PS3's are not duty free... and of course depending on the region you'll also have to pay a sales tax as well.

I'm not suggesting that importing is a bad idea, as I have occasionally imported electronics from retailers and manufacturers outside the US. My point is that the PS3 in the UK is not selling for twice as much as any place else (which is what you said twice already), and after all the extra cost and inconvenience of buying it in the US or Japan and importing it back to the UK, any cost savings will be trimmed further.

First of all I am not making the trip especially for it, I will be going abroad anyway. I think you just being over the top with the importing definition! Im on holiday and I will purchase one whilst im there. The duty in other countries is far less than that of the UK... I already have a quoted price of £246 pounds from Sony Style Hong Kong.... and that is all I will pay, sales tax included (HK doesn't have a high sales tax).

Besides all of this, I don't even understand why you care about what I personally do! Its simple... Its £246 there and £424 pounds here... If you happen to be going abroad anyway then the travel fair is not a factor in its cost......end of story

However if you are going abroad to especially do it then it does not make sense, AS I SAID BEFORE!
