PS3 General Discussion

I'm too lazy to multi quote at this point Di-Ni.

Yes, you got trophies saying you are a great poster here. Thats great. I may never have earned the Quality post badge, but that maybe a result of me not posting here for over a year, or that most of the forum is slowly degrading into increasingly inane threads. Who really knows. You can be helpful; I've seen it with my own eyes. I've never said you just argue endlessly about stuff.

I have yet to see you make a post being critical of Sony, and I have read a far share of your posts. Please find me some that are critical and I'll happily read them.

The religion bit was an analogy, clearly. If you have ever discussed religion with someone that is remotely zealous, you would understand what I meant by it. You try to tell someone their opinion, their beliefs, are invalid.

Anonymous information... I assume by this you mean Joey stating what his eyes saw. You pulled information from a variety if different sources and used it to say his information was invalid. It wasn't invalid, but it was different. Different sources result in different information, clearly. Just like water boils at different temperatures based on pressure and food can vary in taste from person to person, information can vary based on location and person. You seem very adept at finding the information that supports your opinion strongly while disregarding the sea of data that has different views.

Perhaps I am young and naive; perhaps you are old and stubborn. What I see here is someone with a flexible veiw and another person that seems to think there is an absolute in information.

PS: My pointing our "going at it" out in the Premo thread was not so much me playing a game as you seem to think. People here are far more interested in an actual discussion or debate than people posting about buying socks or ranting about how great this or that car is. Plus, it has the added benefit of bringing in other opinions and views, and more of those never hurt.

And if I wanted to insult you, I would have done so very directly. You at least develop points and ideas, much unlike some other members that I have dealt with in certain topics.

Moving on.

My other half recently bought a laptop. It has Vista Home Premium on it. The second - the second - she switched it on, my PS3 went monkeypoo then, after claming down, detected it as a Media Server (the laptop's name is displayed in "Media Servers"). But I cannot access any of the video or music files on it.

What do I have to do to the PS3 or laptop in order to access the stuff on one from the other?

i belive in media centre you need to allow sharing? i dont have the exact list on me. but something in settings to do with that. pLus you need to have all the content you want shared in your library.

Dude, we get it, you have an uncomfortable love for your 360. Get over it, we don't care. Leave this thread, and never come back, unless you have something important to talk about. This is the PS3 discussion thread, not the 'why I love my 360 so much, but my PS3 isn't my GF' thread.

Wow I'm sorry if that's how it came across mate, all I was trying to do initially was just respond to someone's comments that the PS3 was more well advertised than the 360 in the holiday season, then had a discussion (which was informative for me) with D-N. I thought it was relevant to the thread, since we were discussing PS3 games.

Who put you in charge anyway? That's some pretty aggressive posting there, do you get that way with anyone who doesn't share the same opinion with you? I'm sorry to make you so upset, maybe I'll be a little gentler next time. :)

Famine you could always just download winamp 5.51 that has winamp remote and with a quick 2 minute set up you can stream audio and video between the laptop/pc to your PS3/TV with no probs whatsoever .. I have tried a few with direct streaming between the PC and PS3 and the winamp version just makes it so easy 👍

Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and make sure Media Sharing is turned on and the PS3 is allowed to share with the laptop. The PS3 should display as 'Unknown Device'.

Then go to Windows Media Player 11 > Tools > Options > Library. Add any directory you wish and it will add it to Media Player's library. Once it has finished, restart your PS3 and all available media should display in the XMB.

I would appreciate it if the personal attacks stopped.

Anyways in all of this nonsense Scaff's post seems to have gotten a bit lost where he pointed this remote out to me off of Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MWQTLU/?tag=gtplanet-20

This is $49.99, what make this remote better than this $19.99 one?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000M17AVO/?tag=gtplanet-20

Is it because one is Bluetooth? Amazon doesn't really give me the information I am looking for or maybe I am just the one overlooking it.

Cool, thanks, I went ahead and ordered it so now I can really enjoy watching my Blue Rays.

Point is, this thread came a long way from it's inception, and seeing people come in here to make stupid comparisons about systems just makes it go down hill. Especially when it's someone in your case, who knows too little about the PS3 to make a fair comparison.

And you can do just about everything with it - Surfing the PSN Store is sooo much more relaxed when done single handedly with the remote instead of the controller :-)

Is there anywhere online i could find a .exe file of WMP 11?

EDIT: Oh nevermind, just found the "Check for Updates."

Cool glad to see I didn't make a bad purchase.

You made some excellent points about how the Wii may very well have helped keep PS2 sales as strong as ever.
And if teh PS2 life expanded beyond 10 years I would also not be surprised, especially as PSP games are now being ported to PS2. With the PSP's newest firmware (or was it a few back?) allowing the processor to achieve its full 333mhz I believe we will see more of that. I am willing to bet we will get an entire God of War saga boxed set in a few years with Chains of Olympus.

Grrrr... Resistance 1, Warhawk, COD4, and UT3 are bad enough in terms of tempting me to give FPS military games a "shot", but seeing all the latest info on MGS4 (which is really looking insanely good now!), Killzone 2, and now Resistance 2, I'm feeling a ridiculous amount of pressure to turn to the Dark Side of gaming. :D
Come on over to the dark side. It's fun to shoot GTP members.

I saw Resistance, I saw game play of it, I rented it, I went online, I took it back immediately. Why, why does this game recieve so much hype? I mean, at least Killzone half lived up to it's hype.
I think it's just a matter of taste. I didn't like Halo 2 much and can wait for Halo 3, but I love Resistance. I also like Warhawk which seems to be a love or hate game.

Out of all of my friends, I am the only one who owns a PS3. None of them have ever played a PS3 and are very defensive about Xbox 360's. They assume PS3's are terrible due to reviews they've seen, and because PS3's don't have Halo 3. It's REALLY annoying! They also think that PS3's are copying Xbox 360's. In this day and age of games consoles, how can you not copy each other?
I guess I have less fanboyish friends, or at least less defensive. Thsoe of us who have our one system (two if you count Wii) all plan to get the other eventually, but at the prices this time around it will be a while. Maybe if Sony would quit finding ways to get me to give them more money. Everytime I think the PS Store has gotten to a stale point they throw something else up that I want to buy. December was an expensive month for me.

It's kind of fun. My kids especially liked it when making movies with EyeCreate and the PlayStation Eye. My little girl likes to turn her voice into a chipmunk, while my son likes to make his voice like a demon... should I be worried? ;)
Sounds normal to me.

and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is about pot hunting which I find disgraceful and rather idiotic to make a story out of it...much like Indiana Jones.
Debate aside here, I haven't played teh full game yet. When you say pot hunting do you mean in the sense that archealogists look for pots or as in they are hunting for wild growing marijuana? I had this crazy notion that they were hunting for lost treasure, which I wouldn't refer to as pots. If in the end it is pots, well that is a twist of fate more true to real life treasure hunters than anything in fiction.

Of course, as you are interested in archealogy it could stick out to you as much as bad journalism does to me.

Share the folders.

No, it is quite nice ad as it is Bluetooth there is none of that pointing it at the right spot while in the same room stuff. I mean, if you set up a crazy mirror configuration so you can see the screen from the toilet down the hall you could still use it, as long as you are in range of the bluetooth signal.

Of course, the down side to that is that when your cat or dog steps on the remote that you purposely pointed away it will still do whatever they stepped on.

But as said before, if you are not playing games it is very convenient for most controls.

I guess it's a bit of the jargon for archaeologist, I'm currently in my undergraduate programme to become one. "Pot Hunters" is what we call treasure hunters, basically people looking for artifacts without trying recording when, where and how they were found. Most archaeologist find it disgraceful and I tend to agree with them, I had no idea the game was really about that.

Sony announces Pick N Mix PS3 bundle

A new 40GB PlayStation 3 deal offering the choice of two from a selection of 12 games is coming to the UK January 18 for £349.99.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced a new PlayStation 3 console bundle for consumers in the UK.

The original version of the PS3 in the region, the 60GB, was given a price cut just before Christmas--although shortly afterward an announcement was made that the model would be discontinued. A 40GB machine was also announced, sans backward compatibility and other functionality, but with a lower price tag.

Now, for the new year, there's a new bundle for the 40GB model, called the Pick N Mix. The bundle includes a 40GB console, plus two games from a list of 12, for £349.99. The offer will launch on January 18.

The games are: Resistance: Fall of Man, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition, Ridge Racer 7, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Folklore, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Warhawk (with headset), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and SingStar (with microphones).

The 40GB PS3 has a recommended retail price of £299.99 on its own, with the games on the list costing in the region of £39.99 and £49.99--the most expensive being Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and SingStar with two microphones, for those determined to get their money's worth.

7? what ridge racer are we on? xD

 Yeah they do tend to over do it but I loved RR5, was the game I bought with my PS3 and I loved it!

That deal I posted sounds quite good considering the games you can choose... I would probably go for Uncharted and Warhawk or HS or F1:CE..

But hey already got mine!.. :sly:

I figured that is what you meant, but I just wanted to clarify so that I wasn't confused. The first thing that went through my head was that Sir Francis Drake was suddenly a drug runner, on top of everything else.

If it helps your enjoyment you could always say he is just trying to claim his family inheritance.

And in the defense of Dr. Jones, he was trying to get them to a museum to be studied, he just ignored all the proper science between discovery and museum. :D

But seeing your take on archeology you may enjoy some of the novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They have teamed up on a number of books, many of which involve proper archeology with creepy suspense surrounding it. It all has a relatively scientific explanation (although somewhat stretching) in the end. I believe it is Thunderhead where they actually have a small rant about improperly studied sites and how past archaeologists just snatched stuff up and took it to museums, ala Indiana Jones style, with little respect for the site in hopes of fame and glory.

And Clive Cussler's non-fiction Treasure Hunters books (two of them) are interesting, although it is sunken ships they are studying and not ancient ruins. But he has a good rant about the dredging of rivers and oceans destroying important archaeological sites. And his fiction novels do mention the hours of sweeping searches involved, but merely mentions that they took place.

And while that kind of story may offend your professional sensibilities, you have to recognize that a game that involves laying out rope grids, digging with the tiniest of tools to prevent damaging artifacts, and then brushing them of, cataloging them and their position, and then doing whatever preservation techniques are necessary, all before even trying to study them doesn't exactly make for an exciting time.

However, that may be an idea for archeology courses to weed out those lacking the proper aptitude to handle the truly repetitive tasks involved and often long stretches of finding nothing new.

I love Preston and Child's books, especially the Pendergast novels, I'm reading The Wheel of Darkness right now. Granted they are a bit far out but I like that in a story. Some of their books would actually make a pretty entertaining game, so would Clive Cusslers.

And I agree a game about true archaeology would be boring as hell, the real thing isn't even that exciting to tell you the truth (I've been on a few "digs" before).

I just didn't really care for U: DF though, it's up there with Indiana Jones, the Mummy, and all those other Hollywood images of what archaeologist do. The game play itself was fine, I just don't like how the story was laid out.

I said the same thing about Halo 2, so I completely understand. I obvioulsy also understand being on the unpopular side of an opinion.

 It would be like Time Team : The Game... oh lord!

oh and if your not in the UK time team is a archeology programme on now and then where they usually dig for days and find not a lot!

I am not a Halo fan, I don't understand what the big deal is with the game. Yes it's a huge boost to the sales of the Xbox system but I just never thought it was all that great. The online features were full of asshats and eleven year olds who swore all the time.

This is one thing I like about the PS3 online, there seems to be less asshatery on it but I'm guessing that was because an older crowd was the initial purchasers of it due to the higher price.

And Robin I've seen Time Team or whatever it's called before, I have a professor who lived in Oxfordshire for a number of years and has a collection of them she shows to the class from time to time.

A little more gravy for us PS3 purchasers, Warner has finally officially announed their exclusive HD media support for BluRay.

Breaking: Warner Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Warner: No Payoff for Move to Blu-ray

Although with the 80,000lb gorilla of MS still playing in this game there are no guarantees this commitment, in all likelihood, should help kill off HD-DVD as a viable format towards the end of this year. So good new for us 👍

Yeah....I know it has been sometime since this announcement, but I just saw a link to the following video on GameFaqs and I thought it was humorous (possible language warning)

xbox live average age of player = 12 years old.
PSN average age of player = about 19 years old.

xbox live just like all xbox fans are to young why do you think they support xbox they all most likely started gaming with the xbox and are very young and annoying.

Poor Hitler, he can't catch a break. First his Xbox Live account and now his HD-DVD player.

Hey, whats the title of the other video? I saw this one yesterday and my friend could not under stand why i was laughing so hard. I'm must be a real geek.

This is the 'clean' version of the XBOX Live video: It would be nice if they would produce a 'clean' version of the one that I previously posted.
