PS3 General Discussion

I never thought that PS3 was good invest financily. But now if i sell my 60GB version and buy 40GB, i gain ~200€ profit. Currently im still playing couple of ps2 games so trading my ps3 to 40Gb version is not currently my plan.

I saw Resistance, I saw game play of it, I rented it, I went online, I took it back immediately. Why, why does this game receive so much hype? I mean, at least Killzone half lived up to it's hype.

I'm not even gonna waste my time on a sequel. I have however been waiting for Killzone 2 for... ev... er...

Um... there is a single player campaign and its pretty good despite the ending. And it did not receive hype from Sony just like Killzone, It could be its great reviews but I'm guessing that was a rhetorical question, good reviews can generate hype. RFOM's online is very fun. I dont know what you are used to but RFOM is still one the best online FPS's after a year. Remember, its not an online game it has an online component with deep stat tracking. Resistance 2 has loads of new features including an 8 player co op campaign.

Sony clearly has 2 heavy hitters here with Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 in the same year.

Playing a game based on hype is always a bad idea, some people are actually
interested in games and not their hype from gamers and reviews.

Hmm I just noticed that in the Burnout Paradise Demo we can now have 8 people in the room, than the previous 4 when the demo was first released.

wow thanks!!!! im gona get underworld. Can't find it anywhere over here(on Blueray). Managed to get u:evolution, but it cost me NZ$50....Well actually they stuffed up and i managed to straight swap NFS:carbon for it hahaha:D

Out of all of my friends, I am the only one who owns a PS3. None of them have ever played a PS3 and are very defensive about Xbox 360's. They assume PS3's are terrible due to reviews they've seen, and because PS3's don't have Halo 3. It's REALLY annoying! They also think that PS3's are copying Xbox 360's. In this day and age of games consoles, how can you not copy each other?

Have you tried to show your friends how good the PS3 really is? Show them exclusive games, Blu Ray movies, PSP connectively, PSN store, customizable themes... seesh, I could go on and on. Until they played a game on PS3, I would suggest your friends refrain from comment. :)

If anything, Microsoft wouldn't be in the console market if it wasn't for Sony's continued success.

Mine do the same. Just talk about how our online is free rather than their Live which costs...Mine friends who own a 360 usually walk off at that point.

Or as Solid Fro says, let them have a go. I've persuaded at least 2 that the PS3 is the one to go for.

You what i like about the PS3 is, that it is so easy to access and you can install other hardware with some simple clicks. I never regretted buying my PS3:D

I've been having a 'problem' in the last couple of days; the PS3 logs off when I close the web browser, on GTP or any other site.
It usually remembered all passwords so I never had to type them everytime, but not now.

Anyone had this happening? Suggestions?

Maybe because uhhh, you're not the final say one what games deserve hype and praise?

If you were, we'd probably be playing ****ty games. The original Killzone was a terrible game. The original Resistance was a wonderful game.

I'll accept that you don't like it, but please STFU you with your comments, because I'm pretty sure the amount of people who loved it, vs those that didn't, are significantly different (i.e. 98% loved it, and uhh, 2% 'you').

Dude, we get it, you have an uncomfortable love for your 360. Get over it, we don't care. Leave this thread, and never come back, unless you have something important to talk about. This is the PS3 discussion thread, not the 'why I love my 360 so much, but my PS3 isn't my GF' thread.

Have you been drinking again :) No its too early for that.

Every friend I have that has a 360 has seen my ps3 and what it can do and after seeing that they all want to get it. Well one friend has had his 360 replaced 3 times and he's fed up with it. When I showed them PSHome they freaked out. All but a few friends of mine are all older than me(29). I do own a 360 but I'm down to just one game, PGR3 and the air has let out big time in that one.

Beerz. I had the same problem since the last update. all my saved web page logins reset. I haven't reentered anything yet but I'll test it out.

Thats a very good point. Microsoft only make Games Consoles so they can try and be number one with all electronics, they should just stick to making Computers, but then again the Xbox 360 is basically just a Computer that plugs into your TV! Leave Games Consoles to the Japanese!

Thanks for the heads up! 👍

BTW: For those like myself that prefer to own movies on DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray, a really great site is DVD Price Search. It is a very easy to use, yet powerful shopping bot for quickly finding the best prices for DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-rays. 👍

In general though, the retailer that I usually buy my movies from is Deep Discount. They almost always have the lowest price, and their customer service is excellent.

As an example, I bought five copies of Planet Earth on Blu-ray from them, and astonishingly, all but one of the copies had lose discs in the box. Turns out it is a known issue due to the hub design by the manufacturer. One quick call to DD's customer service resulted in them sending me four replacements, all via FedEx over night, free of charge. 👍

They also think that PS3's are copying Xbox 360's.
Considering how mislead they appear to be on the other things they said about the PS3, perhaps its understandable why they think that as well, but honestly, there is almost nothing similar about the PS3 and the 360, and if anything, with new models of the 360, in some ways the 360 is the one doing the copying, like adding HDMI.

The PS3 still has many features that are completely lacking in past and all or some current 360 models, like built-in WiFi, built-in memory card readers, Bluetooth 2.0, Bluetooth controllers (with motion sensitivity) +play & charge support included, 40GB or larger HDD on all models, web browser, video/voice conferencing, SACD player, Blu-ray player, DVD 1080p upscaling, support for games on a blue laser optical disc, support for 3rd party OS and hardware, and of course the PS3 didn't even copy the 360 in terms of CPU technology.

So not only is the PS3 not a copy of the 360, but in some ways the latest 360 models are trying to copy some of the features the PS3 had from the get go.

Actually they don't make computers either. In fact, just about every time Microsoft has tried to get into the consumer electronic hardware business they have failed, at least financially. Microsoft is first and foremost a software company, and many stock holders would really like it if Microsoft would stop wasting billions of dollars on all these failed attempts in making hardware.

That's pretty harsh don't you think. His posts in this thread have largely been between he and I, and while I don't share much of his subjective opinions, I certainly don't see him posting any obvious love of the 360. If anything, it just seems he is unaware and or uninterested in the current choices in PS3 games, that and mistaken about the differences, or lack thereof between most 360 and PS3 editions of multi-platform titles.

Besides, even if he does have an uncomfortable love for the 360 (funny visual BTW :D) , I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to express it, as long as it relates to the topic, which so far it has. As long as facts aren't being exaggerated and or made up, and everyone stays on topic, I would welcome even the most hardcore 360 fans to post here.

The point of these discussion threads is to share information and help each other out, and by welcoming 360 fans to join the discussion, maybe some of them will realize that some of what they thought was true about the differences between the 360 and the PS3 are not true, and also discover the real differences between the two consoles, and might even discover that the PS3 is a perfect fit for them.

Now I agree that hardcore fans of a specific console (or any format) that post in threads about opposing formats with the sole purpose of stirring the pot, misleading others, and attempting to initiate flame wars are as unwelcome as a horde of army ants at a picnic. :)

Thankfully, I don't personally feel that's Vasc0's intention.

That Earth effect in Music player is great! It's nice to finally have a new visual player.
It really is stunning isn't it!

It's especially impressive when playing Gustave Holst's "The Planets", any Star Wars score by John Williams, and of course Johann Strauss' "The Beautiful Blue Danube" and Richard Strauss' "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" - both made famous to modern audiences by Stanley Kubric's masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. 👍

You can also quickly switch to a different earth scene by cycling through the visual player options... although its randomly selected.

I just wish you could pause the video, and or have the option to repeat a scene.

Speaking of features, has anyone messed around with the new Voice Changer yet?

It's kind of fun. My kids especially liked it when making movies with EyeCreate and the PlayStation Eye. My little girl likes to turn her voice into a chipmunk, while my son likes to make his voice like a demon... should I be worried? ;)

I'd definitely be taking her to get checked out. You never know what sort of future problems that could lead her to.

;)

I love the earth visual, but I found out you can control the little square one with the right stick

Microsoft must be adding stuff to Xbox 360's because they're getting nervous now that PS3's are rapidly gaining on them for sales and popularity.

Well the prices were too tempting, so I just ordered the following Blu-ray titles for only $14.50 each with free shipping:
While I was at it, I also ordered the following Blu-ray titles:
I also decided to pre-order Family Guy - Blue Harvest Special Edition (w/ limited-edition collectibles).

Another useful resource for those shopping for Blu-ray and HD DVD discs is High-Def Digest's Review Database. They have some of the best reviews for HD titles I've read, and have yet to steer me in the wrong direction. 👍

Wow DN, you buy a lot of stuff. I guess you like Blue eh? lol
I have a real passion for film, and have long before DVDs even came out. As such I have about 2,500 DVDs and prior to that I had a pretty healthy Laser Disc collection as well. I never liked VHS or Beta so I only had a moderate collection of movies of tape.

The biggest problem with 1080p movies on Blu-ray and HD DVD is that they are for the most part so much nicer, both in sound & vision, than their DVD counterparts, that they make it extremely difficult to go back and watch movies on DVD... which means my collection of DVDs doesn't get used much these days, other than lending them out to friends and family, and watching them on trips.

2500 is a lot of DVD's DN. But if your a fan of films then so be it. But i would love to watch a Blu Ray movie one day on my PS3. Just need a HDTV:ouch:

Believe it or not, I never bought my PS3 for games. I bought it as it was the highest rated and yet least expensive Blu-ray player back when it launched a year ago.

I've never been much of a console gamer, and was only into PC and arcade games when I was younger. Despite owning a PS2, I only played racing sim-style games on it, like GT, F1, WRX, NASCAR HEAT, Le Mans, etc. and a few sports games. Oh, and Silent Hill 2 and GTA3 and maybe a small hand full of others.

The problem I had with video games was the poor video and sound quality, and lack of any or little online gaming modes.

The PS3 has certainly changed my opinion on all of those categories, and am now finding myself becoming a semi-serious gamer... which is eating into my movie watching time. :odd:

2500 is a lot of DVD's DN. But if your a fan of films then so be it.

The problem is the amount of space they take up, and trying to keep track of them and organized so that it isn't hard to find what I'm looking for...

From the Post pics of your PS3 setup! thread:

Had I taken a pic of it in my home office you would not have said that:

:ouch:
...How can anyone have all those movies?!?
Unfortunately, that is but the tip of a very large iceberg...

Guilty as charged, but actually that mess is more of a reflection of the current state of affairs in my home theater, which is in the midst of being remodeled. In addition, my DVD collection is rather unwieldy and is spread over several rooms.. and large storage boxes.

 I know the feeling. I actually have set aside a separate area for all her "chick flicks" (truth be told though, I do like some of them). :sly:

I gave up trying to sort them alphabetically a very long time ago. Now I sort them by genres, and while that can sometimes be difficult, as most films have many different genres, there is usually one category that best fits the film. My wife and guests prefers having them organized this way as it makes it easy to browse for types of movies, rather than just a specific title.

I also use DVD Profiler to keep my collection organized. If you haven't heard of this program before, I strongly suggest you check it out! I have tried several different competing DVD and film database programs and this easily was the best for me. It is not only a great program for organizing your titles, but it gives very in depth information on each title as well as detailed stats about your collection.

Here is a list of my DVD collection (currently over 2,000 titles) . I know that seems like a lot, but not only have I been collecting DVDs since its rollout in 1997, but I also have a very broad interest in genres and styles of filmmaking. I prefer to own rather than rent, not just for the convenience of having the DVD readily available, but I have found that many superior DVD editions are not available for rent, and that when a title has multiple release editions, rental companies generally only offer the lesser quality edition.

I also really enjoy sharing my passion for film, so I am regularly lending out my DVDs to family and friends... at any given time I probably have at least 100 DVDs from my collection that are being lent out. I find it immensely rewarding to introduce someone to film or director that they may not have heard of before and it becomes one of their personal favorites (one of my current favorite titles to recommend is L4YER CAK3). I also hate the idea of DVDs just sitting on shelves and never getting played. :)

I have toyed with the idea of putting them all on multiple hard drives in a RAID system, but I'd need more than 20 terabytes of disc space which isn’t very cost effective, and would in itself require a lot of room and generate a lot of heat.

Not to mention the time it would take me to copy them all on to hard drives and then the time to enter them into a new database that would manage all those files on all those terabyte drives. Just thinking about it gives me little motivation to actually do it, regardless of the fact that terabyte drives are dramatically coming down in price.

I really should buy my first blu ray movie at some point! Need to find one thats either region free or whatever blu ray region HK is...

DN, you got LOADS of media, like games DVD's n stuff! I've got like maybe 50 things in DVD cases in total!

I believe I finally found a use for the PS3, I bought my HDTV today (a 40" Sony 1080p) and I watch the special edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I'm impressed with Blue Ray for the most part, other then the ludicrously high price of the films I don't really have a complaint about it. The PS3 is still the cheapest Blue Ray you can buy, Best Buy is still getting $649.99 and up for most of there player (they might have cheaper one but I did not see them), that alone makes it a good investment now...unlike before which it was just an object that sat around collection dust. I really wish some titles would come out that I was remotely interested in, I rented that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune game and didn't really care for it, but I think it was the sheer idiocy of the story line that irked me the most.

One thing that irritated me about the PS3 though was you have to buy an HDMI cable in order to watch or play anything in HD. The 360 at least gave me those orange, green and blue connectors (I have no idea when they are called) with the system so I could play around on that with having to get an HDMI cable. Granted I am going to buy more cables online in order to hook every thing up with them, but since I wanted to play with my new toys today I needed to spend $24.99 on the damn thing. I know HDMI is better but I just think I should have gotten the stuff in the beginning.

Oh is there a remote I can get for the PS3? Using the controller sucks for trying to play movies. I don't need anything epic or expensive, just something to make using the controls either while I'm kicking back in my Lazy Boy.

To sum it all up I do dislike the game selection since there is nothing that suits my tastes but the Blue Ray makes up for that.
