PS3 General Discussion

G.T
Not meaning to add to the current discussion... but this is not true. Yes, you have to pay, but it does work. It's only very recently on weekends (and during the last Christmas period) in the evenings it will start to bog down. But other than that, it's been perfectly fine. In some games it's more stable than PSN (ie COD4), but the PSN is getting better, I know. But going as far as saying it doesn't work is completely false.

Ya I would agree, I don't own a 360 but my friends do and playing it on XBL we have not had many problems nor have they really complained about it. Plus if you pay for it to work, so it should be working almost all of the time, but I can understand around Christmas time. The PS3 COD4 servers got a bit log jammed during the Christmas break too.

Anyways completely un-related, will the PS3 play burned/ripped Blue-Ray movies from a Blue-Ray burner. A buddy of mine recently bought one (yes they are like $800 or something) and said he was going to be burning me some stuff on it (legal stuff, movies he has made concerning cars and whatnot). So will it play it or does Sony have some sort of copy protection on it...I vaguely remember hearing this on a forum or two but a lot of that stuff can not be trusted.

I would assume it could, it has no problems playing DVDs with burned stuff.

Ok cool, I'll be getting it tomorrow when I see him at school and I'll give it a try and let everyone know. I can't imagine an issue but as I've said I vaguely remember reading where it couldn't.

I sincerely hope that it doesn't work on the PS3....the last thing this world needs is more pirates. Why don't you have your buddy burn an HD-DVD for you and see if that works on the attachment that you bought for you 360?

There is nothing pirated about what he has, they are movies he shot with his own HD camcorder of his personal car racing around at a local racetrack over the summer. I would never ask about any form of pirated material on GTP.

I do not have an HD DVD drive on my 360 and as far as I know my buddy does not have the proper equipment to burned HD DVD's assuming they use a special burner. He wants me to try the Blue-Ray though since he just bought the burner.

just curious, but what are the chances of a sony ericsson bluetooth headset being compatible with the ps3 ? i'm hoping it does, because then i would be able to use it for my cellphone as well.

If you have the headset you might have used if you owned a PS2, it works on the PS3 too.

But if you're looking to get a headset for your cell phone too, then get it. It should work on the PS3, but i can't vouch for it.

Really? I've never noticed you can see the front label from the back of a DVD

You absolutely can. I just did this with Airplane: Don't Call Me Shirley Edition. Hold it up to the light (not a solar eclipse) with the label side away from you. You will see "Airplane" showing through. CD's and other optical media (MO excepted) will do this. Blu-ray's finer pitch and smaller dot size probably make this effect easier, but it all works the same.

Cheap discs with pasted-on labels will, obviously, not work.

I really like this Folding at Home thing the more I play around with it, quite a bit like the SETI thing I used to do. Do the yellow dots represent PS3's processing the information?

They dots are only rough positions of the PS3's at work. I often leave it on while listening to the music now with the latest update. Although i would say my MP3 phone would be less energy consuming to listen to music!!

Yes, I performed an nearly identical test as well, but it still comes out that Blu-Ray is the easiest (unless there is anything different about HD-DVD, which I never tried).

Gotcha, this is quite cool and I'm leaving it go to 1.) see how the PS3 copes with long term use and 2.) to see how loud it is at night. It ran for about 36 hours straight and felt rather warm and the fans were quite loud but this is to be expected on running electronics for a length of time like that.

My only question is how do you allow it to change the music? When I go under that option they are all blanked out...do you have to unlock them or something?

Also I've been looking at upcoming PS3 games and HAZE looks pretty cool, I'll probably end up getting or at least renting that one.

One more thing, has anyone played Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom? It looks like the Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance games that were out a couple years back for the consoles. The reviews are somewhat mixed on it so I would like to see what members here thought about it.

There really isn't any game out for any system right now that I find appealing so I'm going back and looking at the older ones because I know I skipped over something.

I'd say if you really liked the previous games then its worth playing if not it may be a pass. It was a rushed launch title. I'm a fan of Champions of Norrath but something keeps me from wanting to play Untold legends even though I have both psp games.

I'm not sure what kinda gamer you are but you must only play games to beat them if you always need something new to play. I'm into classic games and I love the nostalgia. Thats why I love my PS3 so much(and the other 10 reasons) and its ability to play my PS1 and PS2 games flawlessly without the need for memory cards.

I just got Final Fantasy 12 for $12 from Amazon, even though I've never really played any of them. i'm very satisfied by the games I own and generally i buy new games with replay value or from my favorite series.

I play games until they loose their entertainment value then I either trade them in or stick them on a shelf until later. This is why I enjoy a good RPG so much, they keep their entertainment value much longer then say a sports game or a racing game for that matter.

Is there any telling if i can use an iPod as a media server for the PS3? Or like an external HDD that i can put on my network?

My only question is how do you allow it to change the music? When I go under that option they are all blanked out...do you have to unlock them or something?

By default it's on Shuffle All, but it also tries to auto-scan for different genres. If you hold square you can see all the controls.

I can confirm that the SE HBH-DS970 does indeed NOT work with the PS3 :-|

Well, as I have only rebooted it during a demo freeze since June I would say it will do quite well. Mine has been on longer than it has been off.

Plus, it makes it convenient to just plug your controllers back in to charge when you finish playing without leaving the console on just for the purpose.

2.) to see how loud it is at night. It ran for about 36 hours straight and felt rather warm and the fans were quite loud but this is to be expected on running electronics for a length of time like that.
Mine sits by a window with an A/C unit (window A/c, no heater) in it so I rarely notice heat issues and with my 1,000 sq ft air purifier in the room the sound isn't noticed at all.

So, I can say when placed well it does not get hot and the noise is no worse than some form of fan.

My only question is how do you allow it to change the music? When I go under that option they are all blanked out...do you have to unlock them or something?
Do you have music on your hard drive?

Also I've been looking at upcoming PS3 games and HAZE looks pretty cool, I'll probably end up getting or at least renting that one.
Yeah, that is the next FPS to catch my eye. Check the PS Store for the videos showing some of the gameplay elements. There is enough involved that there are various strategies for defeating your enemies.

Welcome to the post Christmas slump.

Do you have music on your hard drive?

No and when I tried to stream it from my computer it told me it was in an unreadable format, which is odd because most of them are MP3's.

----

In other new Kate and I picked up Star Wars: The Complete Saga this afternoon and pretty much played it the rest of the day. We just stopped for the night because she wants to get ready to go to sleep. It's quite fun and it's pretty easy to get into although there are some decently challenging levels. Pretty much the main reason we got it for the PS3 was because GameStop had a used copy, I was going to get it for whatever system had it used.

I've just let Folding run tonight and I'll pick back up on some more gaming tomorrow.

Hmm probably not .

We both have to be up early tomorrow so I do not believe there is going to be any "additional gaming".

honestly I think you would enjoy playing Uncharted together in the sense that you work together as a team, it's one of those games my gf loves to watch me play especially later on when there are plenty of OH ****!!! moments

The FCC just approved the 40GB Ceramic White PS3 for US consumption. It's apparently the same model announced for Japan back in October. Perfect for the living room laboratory if ever released this side of the Pacific.

Well streaming won't give you in-game/in-Folding music. It has to be on your hard drive.

You are sure you are on the newest firmware? Also in your settings you can turn it on to read either WMA or AAC files. I can't remember which.

Oh, do your MP3s have DRM? That could be doing it.

Also, try a media server that will transcode on the fly. I am getting ready to setup Nero to see how well it works.

Ever get this situation?

Wife on cell phone: I'm just sitting on the couch, with the puppy, watching him play his game. Oh, Warzone or something like that.
Me: WARHAWK!!!
Wife: Oh, Warhawk. Actually, it's pretty fun to watch. It's some sort of Capture the Flag game, but you have to kill each other to get the flag.
Me: Actually, I am playing Team Deathmatch, which should explain that my goal is to kill the other team.
Wife: Well, now he's playing Team Deathmatch. It's got a lot of violence.
Me: It is called Warhawk, not Cuddly-kittenhawk.

^An actual situation from Thursday night.

So - Safe to eat - in the US then ?...
FDA or FCC?

I want to know what they changed to require a new FCC approval. If it is just a color change it should have been fine. Maybe it will be the first packed with the DS3, and as it is technically a new wireless controller it had to get approved.

I think I do, I downloaded something about a week ago when I turned it on and said there was an update. I might be missing something which is entirely possible.

Oh, do your MP3s have DRM? That could be doing it.

My music falls off the back of a virtual e-truck about 90% of the time, funny how it always seems to happen right in front of my computer.

If your MPS3s aren't having DRM issues then I don't know what to say unless you are using some odd form of codec that I'm not aware of. I've used bit rates ranging between 96kbs and 192kbs.

Try copying some to the hard drive and see if it works. It could be your media server. I know mine can't even see MP4s because Media Player doesn't recognize them. That is why I am switching to Nero. If your media server can't read the file/codec then it can't send the proper data to your PS3.
