PS3 General Discussion

Anyone check out Bonus Round for this week? David Jaffe is on and takes on what's his name's loaded questioning and defends the PS3.

I may not agree with most of what Jaffe says, but he's dead on with this one.

I don't even know what Bonus Round is, but I do believe that Jaffe is one of the more reasonable guys when it comes to PS3 development. He actually started doing things correctly though, by making a small PSN game (Calling all Cars) to start off with and then after that he was familiar enough with the new structure to take on bigger projects. And when you look at what he has been involved with (Twisted Metal, God of War) he has never been one to shy away from putting effort into making great games on the PlayStation platform.

So apparently Netflix is talking about having streaming movies to other consoles, which I would assume means the PS3. I have it on the 360 and it works wonderfully so I would have to imagine it would work the same on the PS3. It's been a life saver on those nights when the weather just plain sucks and there is nothing on TV. Although if there is something I can't find to stream then all I do is throw it in the Netflix queue and its in my mailbox a couple days later.

Netflix job posting hints at movie streaming for other consoles
A curious new job listing for Netflix seeks an "Engineering Leader -- Gaming Platforms," reports Gamasutra. The applicant is expected to have experience developing and testing media rich applications, and should be prepared to "rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms."

Either Netflix is getting into the game streaming space, or this may be another sign that Netflix streaming is coming to other consoles. Considering the relative success of Netflix on Xbox 360, it's not surprising that the company would like to expand its service and branding to other consoles -- that is, if this "Engineering Leader" can figure it out.

Hopefully if it does come to the PS3 I can link my account with both consoles since I would imagine there would be content solely for one console or another. I may be wrong but I believe you can not stream Sony movies to the 360, however that might have been a rumour floating around the net. I haven't actually looked to see yet since I can typically find something to stream.

Although I wonder how the Sony movie store would take to this?

That is the big question. About a month ago Netflix sent out a random survey to customers and one of the questions asked if they would use a streaming system where you put a disc in your PS3 and ran the software to connect to Netflix Streaming. So, what they are doing might not be specifically planned with Sony.

They also had a similar survey a while back that asked the same question about the Wii.

Fortunately for Sony, Netflix streaming still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to movie selection. As much as I love Troma (Toxie forever!!!) I often find myself not finding a movie I want at that exact moment.

But then I have an abnormally large movie collection, so it could just be my perspective.

I read somewhere that if the sales for the new Sonic game aren't good enough they may cancel the series.
Really? I think you'll find that's what will happen with any game series. Basic economics.

Considering it had already sold around two million before it even came out in Japan, its safe to say that Sega's genius strategy of basing their entire profits around mediocre Sonic games will continue for years to come.

And this explains why the majority of games now have titles ending in numbers or subtitles.

Its $20, During X-mas time it was an easy gift idea or a cruel inexpensive joke.

Not strictly PS3 related, but is the PSP version of flOw the same game as the PS3 version? I saw it at Wal-Mart and was wondering whether I should pick it up.

Pretty much, except without motion control, obviously. I would get it on PS3 instead. It's only like $7.

Possibly one of the funniest and game related ways of selecting beta testers ever...

Well... one of our PS3s has developed an interesting fault. It's refusing to obtain an IP address from the router.

Salient points:
  • Wired & Wireless connection settings tests fail at Obtaining IP Address phase
  • No settings have changed on that machine between the last successful attempt to go online (a COD4 night last weekend) and the present.
  • No settings have changed on the router between the last successful attempt to go online and the present.
  • All other machines on the network connect fine, including the 60Gb PS3, wirelessly, downstairs

I haven't checked the integrity of the wired connection in that room yet (that's on tomorrow's "To-do" list) but the PS3 won't connect wirelessly either. The only recent change is the most recent Firmware update, but that has been applied to the 60Gb console also.

Apart from "Network card is fried", I'm scratching my head. There's little help on the EU.PS site. It's almost a brand new console so it's no problem if it's gonaded - still has most of the first year remaining on its warranty :D - but any thoughts and assistance which can be given will be received gratefully. Or pithily.

Have you tried reentering all the settings? Have you tried moving it downstairs? Have you tried resetting the router? I dont know what system restore (or factory settings, whatever it is) is but do you know if that might help your case?

Also, apparently sonys phone service is good, so you should try and give them a buzz.

Have you tried reentering all the settings?

Yes.

Have you tried moving it downstairs?

No, but the PS3s are about as far from the router as each other for wireless purposes. Plus the issue is also present on the wired connection which is only available upstairs (though I have several other points to try it on, which I might attempt tomorrow).

Have you tried resetting the router?

Yes. The router is power cycled daily (not least as I have a dynamic IP and it allows me to change it :D )

I dont know what system restore (or factory settings, whatever it is) is but do you know if that might help your case?

I'd prefer to avoid that, if possible.

Well Famine, I can tell you I know the wireless might have failed, as mine no longer works. My first PS3's wireless was fine right up until the PS3 failed, but my refurb's wireless worked for about a week and then one day it just wouldn't connect, I think it did indeed fail to get an IP, the wireless indicator light didn't light up either, however I now have it connected with a wire and that works fine. I recommend you try a different wired connection to see if that works, if not you'll probably have to contact Sony. Out of interest does the light on the PS3's Ethernet port light up at all when you plug in the cable.

I've actually managed to fix the issue - though I will be realistic and say "temporarily" - with an "Hmm, I wonder..." moment.

Instead of allowing the PS3 to obtain it IP address from the range permitted, I've assigned a static IP to that MAC. Two reboots later (PS3, router) and it all seems to be functioning - certainly at least enough to download High Stakes poker and its update (600Mb total).

It's a little confusing why this wasn't apparently necessary before, but at least it means I now don't have a gap in my routing table :D

That is a little confusing, maybe someone who knows a bit more about these things can explain it. At least it's working, lets hope it stays that way.

SCEA: “We’ve captured the hardcore” with PS3, will push for casual later this year

Sony has told VG247 that it’s “captured the hardcore” with PS3, and while it will serve that central user with titles such as Heavy Rain and God of War III later this year, it plans on pushing further into the casual space with the console.

“There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer,” said SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller, speaking at GDC.

“We’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcore’s purchased. We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.”

Koller told us to look to the past for hints to PS3’s future.

“Think of some of the latter-half PS2 franchises,” he said.

Linky.

Quite an interesting change in strategy. While I highly doubt anything will come of it simply because it doesn't seem feasible (not to mention sounds just like made-up PR speech), I do wonder the ramifications if it did happen. At the very least, I'm guessing there would be a massive (360 levels would probably be necessary, as that is the only way the "casuals" would find owning the PS3 to be worth it) price drop; and I've heard of ideas towards Sony trying to start up a system similar to the Touch! Generations line at the traditional $50 price point.

Their strategy to hook the casual gamer wont be games, it will be a price drop or some kind of device to play unique games. Or Massive advertising like M$ does which Sony never does.

Actually you can already see their focus on casual gaming as they now have PSN deals with all the mobile game developers. Gameloft and Pop Cap are the most notable, but EA and a few others also make a fair share of casual style mobile games.

I knew they were working on the casual games a bit more, but didn't realize it was going to be a full focus. I may not be as impressed with E3 as John Koller has been telling me I will be. I hope they don't turn their E3 2009 into a Nintendo E3 2008 presentation.

Since it's a wired device, you could always just assign it a static address. It's generally suggested that all wired devices (printers, wireless access points, etc.) are given a static address since, in all likelihood, they won't be moving. A laptop or netbook, however, should be given addresses dynamically, as it definitely moves from place to place, and that range should be outside the range of those you have statically assigned.

Just a suggestion...from someone with 29 years in the business.

I always wanted a reason to post this video:

Apparently E3 will have an announcement for a US$100 price drop for ps3 among psp2 news.https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3373487&postcount=84

This is what Sony should do: $100 price drop, throw in Motorstorm and Ratchet, a free voucher to download a PSN game, Bluetooth headset, and a HDMI cable. This will finally shut up the elite "gaming media" once and for all.

As long as it draws attention to them (thus making them money) it is very unlikely they will ever stop griping about this or that... regardless of any lack of logic or facts. :indiff:
