PS3 General Discussion

How is Hulu? I've seen the commericals, seems promising. Anyways
Hulu is, for me, awesome. It has great quality, which is why I need to let it buffer, and it puts in a single commercial where the usual commercial break would be in order to pay for the service, so its free.

And despite my wishes Eliza Dushku has not shown up to eat my brains (as she claims she will in the ad).

And as it is owned in partnership by NBC and Fox (and all that comes with that) you get a lot of stuff.

I'm thinking of using it to watch Battlestar Gallactica, which I have yet to watch one episode of.

so I installed the 160 gig hard drive with no issues (continued from the ps store thread which I accidentally posted in originally). Everything copied fine about an hour 15 both ways. Unfortunately I accidentally ordered an IDE enclosure instead of eSATA so I don't have that 60 gig external just yet:indiff:.

I'd like to say a couple of words about Sonic: Unleashed at this point.

Sonic: Unleashed is the worst game I've ever played.

And by that, I mean it's the worst 10 hours of cutscenes I've been forced to endure, 20 hours of loading screens and an hour of actual, very linear, gameplay. And the gameplay itself is... just... dreadful.

Please tell me you didn't expect better. I always thought it was a given at this point that Sonic games have rarely been decent since the Dreamcast died.

Every time one comes out I let others, like you, play it first so I can see if it might be worth checking out. I haven't bought a Sonic game that wasn't originally on the Genesis.

You should really check out the video review over on IGN (or was it Game Informer?). There is more disappointment and disdain in that review than i have ever seen for a video game.

Wow that sounds like the review they gave it in Game Informer. What happened to Sonic?

I think they should release another 2D Sonic and put it up on PSN. The development time would probably be pretty short and I'm sure it would be a lot better for everyone.

Or just give up, how many years have they been trying to make a decent Sonic game for now. They should move on with the times, nobody is interested in Sonic any more and the games are rubbish, so what makes you think a change back to 2D will help.

I would suggest an HD upgrade to the original, but that is in the Genesis Collection.

I do think that going the way Mega Man 9 did could do a lot for the franchise.

Sonic is not a game to be played in 3D, plain and simple. In 3D everything is coming straight at you very fast, the world appears to be ridiculously narrow, and developers have this annoying desire to give a more fleshed out story.

In 2D you accept the narrow world as just being a cross cut of a real world, you can see ahead of you more easily and dodging hazards is just a matter of jump or not, and no one expects a complex story or some forced plot device.

Anyone else get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection?

The collection's backgrounds and interface are in HD. The games themselves are merely blown up to fit the screen. Still, I find it a lot of fun and probably easier to get working with my LCD monitor than an old Genesis console.

Anybody "force" 1080p on games? The back of the box of Ninja Gaiden Sigma says it supports 1080p but it always went to 720p while booting. So in the display settings I unchecked all display resolutions except 1080p (and 480p, which is mandatory) and ran the game. Well, it looks great, no slowdown whatsoever. Is there a reason the PS3 would pick 720p over 1080p on a game that supports it?

720p is the optimal performance for game. Though, your system should have defaulted to 1080p, as mine always did when I played NGS. Don't know what to tell you.

:yuck:
Sega at its worst. Not since Smash Pack on the Dreamcast has Sega done something so pathetic.
What do you mean? Is it poorly done or do you not like classic games put into a bundle?

And a WipEout HD update is coming tomorrow.

Hi everybody! I’m excited to bring to you news of an awesome update for WipEout HD. And perhaps the best news is you don’t have to wait long for it. Tomorrow, April 8, 2009, the V1.30 free update for WipEout HD will be available for download. The update will introduce a selection of new multiplayer features to the legendary anti-gravity racer. Check out the full details below.

Online Ranking

With over 50 ranks to progress through, there will be a new edge to online racing in WipEout HD. Your finishing position, speed class and the rank of your opponents will determine how many ranking points you are awarded as you strive to go from a Wipeout Trainee to a Wipeout Legend!

Podium Screen & Online Badges

A new podium screen will now display the top three finishers after each online race or tournament.
Regardless of whether you finish in the Top Three or not, every player has the chance of being awarded an ‘online badge’ in recognition of how they performed in the race.
There are 33 badges in total, examples of which are displayed here.

Connect easily with your friends

Game invites have now been introduced to WipEout HD to make it easy for you to invite your friends to join your game or for them to invite you! In addition, you will also be informed of any friends with an active online game and have the ability to join that game instantly!

Watch races in progress

If a race has started before you have had chance to join it, Spectator mode will allow you to watch that race. Within spectator mode, you can choose from four camera angles and select which ship to watch.

After the race has been completed, you will be taken back to the lobby with the other players so you can compete with them in the next race.

Additional Options

Lastly, to provide more variety when setting up an online race, WipEout HD has added a few additional options:

HUD Weapon Hints on/off.
Opponents - Choose to create a Public, Friends-only or Invite-only game.
Barrel Rolls on/off
Pilot Assist Allowed on/off
Number of laps (max 20)
We hope you enjoy these new features. And it you haven’t played WipEout HD in a while, now is a good time! We’ll see you online.

I adore classic games put into a bundle. Compared to the crap that is VC, classics collections are the best thing in the entire world.
However, Ultimate Genesis Collection manages to be completely inadequate when it comes to being a decent collection for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being because Sega keeps making collections. There are sound problems in some games, graphics problems in others, notable games are missing still (because Sega is too lazy to spend 15 minutes to fix Revenge of Shinobi, for example), some games in previous collections have been taken out (its called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis collection and they didn't even put all of the Sonic games in it, for which Sega made up something on the spot to try and handwave it), the total game list is pretty much identical to the last collection Sega did (which, mind you, was only 2 years ago), and they still refuse to acknowledge that Sega as a company did indeed make games for systems other than the Genesis.

So I guess its a combination of things: The emulation isn't great (which takes some talent, because it is literally Kega Fusion and some roms on a disc with shiny menus), many of the titles on the list seem to be chosen at random (especially compared to Genesis Collection on the PS2), many popular first party games are still missing (no doubt for incentive to release another collection), and Sega seems to do nothing these days but release Genesis games.

Wow, that was a lot bigger answer than I expected.

I have the PS2 Genesis Collection, which saved me from a few overpriced impulse VC buys. I intend to rent this to see if it is worth it, but it is far down on my list of games to rent.

Honestly, I think this is just to grab trophy hunters and anyone without a PS2 BC PS3. If you are just looking for a few of these games this a cheaper route than individual purchase on the Virtual Console.

I don't think Backbone Entertainment uses Kega Fusion. Kega Fusion is written in Intel x86 assembly language, and probably isn't trivial to get working on a PS3. Are the sound and graphics issues still in the PS3 or Xbox 360 version? I haven't noticed any show stoppers so far.

The only thing I think the game is missing is Remote Play, but then I noticed there's a Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP. Meh. :indiff:

I bought the Ultimate Genesis Collection, but I'm also not a looney purist. All of the good Sonic games are on there (and a few bad) but that's all that matters.

Dr Robotniks MBM, Shinobi, Columns, all 3 Streets of Rage titles, and a ton of other random games I was never able to play? How can you call this "Bad"? especially when SoR titles are freaking TEN DOLLARS on XBL?

Cry elsewhere, but there is no reason to shed bitter tears over a game that features so much for such a low price.

Sega has used Kega for emulation since the original Sonic Mega Collection. I also believe (don't quote me, as I read about it last year) Steve said that Sega still owned the licence to use it.

Capcom's John Diamonon just created an epic post where he blatantly makes fun of people that whine in comment sections.

FLOCK! Lands on PSN Today!
Posted by John Diamonon // Capcom

OK, I would like you all to stop with the FLOCK innuendos. I mean, we’re adults here, most of us anyway. Flockin’ stop that sheep now! I’m telling ya, it’s getting real old.

Here were some of your, uh, witty comments:

“What the FLOCK!? I want to play it!” – Thrasher20
“Why the flock won’t John Diamonon respond to my question?” - Realaride
“Give me a FLOCKING prize!” – XxBigP123xX

LOL. I don’t know about you, but no matter how many times I read your flockin’ comments, it never gets old.

So the wait is over. FLOCK! finally lands on PSN today. Here’s what you can expect:

Over 50 levels of intense flocking action!
Level creating, sharing and rating!
Trial mode! (Basically a demo with an in-game purchase option) Trophies!
In game XMB music support!
Two player local co-op!
Cow poop!
Flies on cow poop!
Pigs rolling on cow poop with flies!
UFOs and a Motherflocker!
A $14.99 price point.
Commenters complaining about said price point!

Gamers purchasing FLOCK and exclaiming that it’s totally worth it!
More harassment about trophy support for previously released games!
Shameless cameo appearance by Blanka from Street Fighter!
Many more surprises and prizes!

I want to set the record straight because I’m not one to hide from anything. We will NOT, I repeat, NOT be charging for extra animals in FLOCK! Yes, the game will be complete with all the sheep, roosters, pigs and cows you can herd to your heart’s desire.

I want to congratulate last week’s contest winners: Jon_Mclane and Corran. Jon won a FLOCK code and a copy of SF4. Corran was the lucky winner of a FLOCK code, FLOCK play set and a Mega Man 9 press kit. If you want to purchase the FLOCK play set, you can buy this extremely limited collectors piece at the Capcom Store tomorrow.

This wouldn’t be a John D blog without a crazy contest now would it? Post #1000 gets a FLOCK code, play set and Mega Man 9 press kit. Only continental US and Puerto Rico will be eligible for the play set and press kit. Please type complete sentences and no consecutive posting. You can post more than once just not consecutively. PM me if you’re the winner.

Also, check here at the end of the month for an awesome announcement!

Oh, he also gave details on Flock coming out today, and codes for what was apparently SF2THD.

This was definitely well played on his part though.

Oh, and regarding the recent discussion on Sega's Sonic. Just a couple heads-up.

The NA PSN store now has the demo for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and the JP PSN store has available for download a free HD copy of the digitally animated short film Sonic: Night of the Werehog

SonicNotW.jpg

Seeing as the film never had any dialogue, there is no need for a dub or subtitles.

It's also noteworthy to mention that the JP version of Home is now showing a full feature anime film (I'm not an expert on anime so I'm not familiar with the title) in theater #3... which I believe is the first time in Home that Sony has shown a full length film... but seeing as it is in the JP Home Theater, there are no English subtitles. :indiff:

Dont take one opinion and run with it. I have it even though i have every rom ever made for gen on my laptop and two pc's. Its still nice to play with other who played them to death when we were kids. Not perfect but far from horrible.

Everyone should try out the Flock! demo. I haven't laughed like this since LBP. Tons of fun!

C'mon *****s... before I tractor-beam your ass! Oh! I made the horny sheep have sex with the regular sheep and they had little baabiieeeezzz!

👍

To Quote Stephen Fry when narrating on LBP: Every time you do a naughty, a little sack-person somewhere dies.:(

Well, it's still on my Gamefly rental list, but after playing the demo I am not sure if it offers anything more than the PS2 version did, other than trophies.
