PS3 General Discussion

I think it's hit or miss, I've rented games where I get the manual and others where I don't. I would say a majority didn't have them though.

What Joey said, essentially. I've gotten games with the manuals, I've gotten games without them, and I've gotten games with the wrong manuals. Though I've never rented any PS3 games, so they might be better at including them for those.

My PS3 has just packed up, I was playing on GTA4 and it just turned its self off with the red light flashing apparently meaning the system has over heated (which is strange because it hadn't even activated all of it fans) so I have left it to cool down for a few hours, now every time I turn it on the green light turns on for about 2 seconds it then turns orange for a split second then it shuts down & I just get a flashing red light. It could not of happened at a worse time because I've been tempted to buy a PS3 Slim but I have no money at all for about 2 weeks & when I get Sony to replace it, it will probably take about the same time so I'm screwed either way.:grumpy:

This is the second PS3 that has just packed up on me, the first one Sony replaced because all of a sudden it just stopped reading discs.:banghead:

I took mine apart this weekend for the second time to clean it because the fan noise was getting sort of ridiculous. Seems to have worked pretty well and again I would recommend it to anyone who is confident they can handle it. I bet it increases the life of the system as long as you don't screw up.

Well I've just phoned Sony and they said they will replace it if I pay them £128 which is probably to be expected since the guarantee expired 4 months ago however last time I had one replaced for free and that was 2 months after the guarantee expired so I was expecting the same thing this time.

So the choice is pay £128 for a big bulky 60 gig that doesn't even last for 18 months or pay £250 for a more compact and possibly more reliable 120 gig unit that I can get as soon as I have the money. Not a tough decision really, its got to be a new PS3 Slim, it's just so annoying that I've lost all my downloaded & saved data, I've got to go 2 weeks with no PS3 & my broken PS3 won't release GTA4, I think its time to introduce it to my friend Mr Sledge-Hammer!

That actually brings up a good point, it should actually be pretty simple to add parts from a dead 60 gig to a model that doesn't have some of it's features such as wifi or a card reader, the bluray drives don't appear to be able to switch between systems but the power supply (which can go bad) does. I wonder if the card reader/wifi can just be swapped and plugged in to another system.

You know...this just happened to me two days ago. You didn't buy yours around Ocotober/November of 07 did you...?

Hey, if you've got any 2.5" HDDs you should see if putting one in does anything. But first see if you can make any use out of the restore menu. My second PS3 failed, but after doing a full factory restore, it failing again, then trying a different hard drive, it was fine.

No my first PS3 just stoped reading discs so Sony replaced it in May 2008.

Yeah I tried restoring the system by holding the power button but it was no use it would just turn off after 3 seconds. I havn't got a another compatable HDD but I tried starting it up with no HDD at all as some people have suggested but it makes no difference.:grumpy:

It is beyond repair now anyway, I had to take it apart to get GTA4 which was inside. Hopefully I should get a new PS3 this week. :)

If the HDD was at fault I wouldn't have had the same problem when I tried it without the HDD in it.

I'll be fair: I looked into your problem more.

My point and facepalming remain. The first hit of a 5 second Yahoo search tells me what you had was probably a bad PSU, with the most likely second place being a fan malfunction. The cost for a replacement for that is around $60. Broken CECHAxx and CECHExx PS3s can still go for $100-120 even if you didn't want to bother fixing it. So perhaps you can understand my lulz when you decide to just destroy the thing rather than attempt to minimize the damage.

I agree with you I could of saved a bit of money if I got it fixed or sold it.

If you have time take a look at this:

But to be honest I was looking for a good excuse to get a new PS3 Slim and this is the perfect opportunity, its just a lot easier taking the game out myself & buying a new PS3 rather than going to the hassle of trying to find the right people to fix it or buy it for the small amount of money I would save.

Courtesy of Sega's typical idiocy, it seems that a whole crap load of Sony info has been leaked (some stuff highlighted for emphasis):

Motion Controller being released in Spring 2010, bundles planned, no prices yet.

Planet 51 might come on a BD Movie/Game Combo

Bayonetta demo launching around XMAS, bayonetta figure as pre-order bonus

Sony wants Vancouver 2010 items in HOME

SEGA open to SONY characters as DLC for PS3 version of SEGA All Stars Racing

Yakuza games might be put up on a "Import" service on PSN.

Aliens VS Predator presence in PS HOME

Iron Man 2 presence in PSHOME

PSP2 and Valkryria Chronicles 2 might get PSP bundles

Aliens to have PS3/PSP connectivity

PS2 emulator on PS3 confirmed

London Olympics perfect for motion control

Digital Dreamcast Titles on PSN

something about PSP specific titles

99 Sonic bluray compilation of all old Sonic games

I'm looking for sources (Sega immediately went after those who posted it), but that seems to be a straight-from-the-horses'-mouth transcript.

What would they mean by "PS2 emulator on PS3"? Some sort of future download that lets you play PS2 discs on any system?

Screw it:
SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 – DRAFT FOR COMMENTS

Objectives of Meeting
Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA

Sony PS3
SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year

Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment.

Motion Controller
Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)

No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.

Alpha Protocol
Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. “Mass Effect felt more RPG.”
Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team.

Planet 51
Sell in of PS3 SKU – SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle.
Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc)
Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc).

Bayonetta
Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure
Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch.
3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs).

Vancouver 2010
HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA
Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories.
HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc).

Sonic Racing
Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU – not ratchet and clank but other characters
maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes

Yakuza
Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles.
SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity.

AVP
Another great HOME candidate
AVP avatars
Hybrid BD disc with movie

Iron Man 2
Great candidate for HOME space – explore Tony Stark’s lab etc.
Should have one for Marvel in general.

PSU2
Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both.

Valkyria 1937
Could bundle with PSP as well.

Vanquish and Aliens: CM
Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin’s Creed for good examples).
If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3.

Thor
SCEA would like a look at the code soon.

Sonic Anniversary
Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
“Best of Sonic” for around $99.
SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards)

PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…

London Olympics
Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.

DC Digital Titles
If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.

PSP Titles

For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises.
SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.
Official transcript of meeting.

You know, Sega should probably stop posting important things on the company's public FTP server. But hey, we might know the skinny on Sony every 3 months if they continue quarterly meetings!

@ LaBounti: I'm assuming they mean a general purpose one (they want all PS2 games on PSN), but I'm not sure if the PS3 is powerful enough. Sony would know better than me, of course.

Toronado, is there a link that still has that info anywhere? I want to send it to some friends but, "I got it on a message board" won't go over well.

I can post an outside download link to the official transcript (ie. Mediafire), but Sega forced the news site originally reporting the leak to take it down and they finally removed the memo from their FTP server.

Kotaku reported on it too, but they only talked about a few things.

The Kotaku link is good enough for my purposes. Thanks.
