PS3 Media Server was the easiest to get working for me.
GT PSP has kind of been advertised on its own, away from the other games. The best I can tell is that as it is more of a niche game it doesn't fit in well in a multiple game ad, or it looks so awesome that it is best to not show other PSP games next to it.@Foolkiller: The PSP advert I saw was for the old version, and it mentioned three games specifically: LBP, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and Ratchet and Klank what ever game that is now. The reason I was surprised about GT Mobile not being included in the advert was because of Motorstorm. I havent played GT Moblie or Motorstorm, but I would hazard a guess, that GT Moblie is the better game, so why choose to promote Motorstorm over it?
All you are seeing is Sony Europe. If you could find and post the ad I may be able to see what you are talking about better.Maybe it is just me, but I don't have any confidence in the way Sony is handling their promotional work, its patchy, very thin on the ground, and not as prevelant as the 360 campaign. 👍
I've got a bit of an unusual question I've got a friend trying to get his PS3 connected to the internet but his house phone line isn't adequate to sustain a proper connection (probably too far from his nearest exchange or something). Anyway so now he's looking into 3G wireless broadband, but for this to work with his PS he'll need to convert the 3G into Wifi or just direct ethernet right?
I've seen Fonera routers that do this but also a lot of other unnecessary things so I'm looking for something cheaper for him, all suggestions or other ways of going about this would be greatly appreciated. 👍
But as for Sony America, their It Only Does Everything campaign has been made of pure win, and after third party title ads they have worked in the PS3 now $299 similar to how the XBox has been doing for a year.
I did some searching and i got this. Hope this can help you
Hehe, yeah. The PS3 is great but I do wish for some kind of upgrade so I can play my PS2 collection; my kid stole my PS2 off to her room. She's on some strange Kingdom Hearts kick and has to play all of them to the finish...I'll never get my PS2 back. hahaExcept it doesn't do everything! Like play my PS2 and PSOne games that are sitting in my closet collecting dust.

Mine does.Except it doesn't do everything! Like play my PS2 and PSOne games that are sitting in my closet collecting dust.
There has been rumors and even notes from a Sony meeting with Sega regarding PS2 games sold through the PSN.Hehe, yeah. And if yours isn't playing PSOne games it has a problem that's not from the manufacturer. All PS3s play PSOne titles, and will even remote play them with the PSP.
Both. All PS1 games play on all PS3s and even disc based ones will remote play. Are you talking about the PSOne game available for download through PSN, or straight from the disk? Cause if you're talking about the disks, I never stuck one in the system to see if it would play it. Gotta see if my Colin McRae Rally 2 will work tonight.
Something I've wondered: When you remote play games, does it play games that have issues running off the PSP by itself? I don't really expect an answer to this, to be honest, but if it does play them fine than a new PSP shot up my needs list. Hot Pursuit, being the reason I bought the original PSP in the first place, doesn't work correctly on the PSP, but if it works on Remote Play...And if yours isn't playing PSOne games it has a problem that's not from the manufacturer. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean a PSP version of Hot Pursuit, or a PS1 rip?Something I've wondered: When you remote play games, does it play games that have issues running off the PSP by itself? Any features added after custom themes often has problems like that if new versions of themes aren't created, which is why Alba is constantly updating his GT theme. When did they add "Power Saving Options" to the XMB? I know its been there for a while (at least since I've owned a PS3), but I just noticed that it screws up in most of my themes, completely ruining my Thundercats Logo Wallpaper + Mirrors Edge theme combo.

I guess what I'm asking is does PSOne games on remote play send the game to the PSP to process, or does it process the game on the PS3 and just send the video.I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean a PSP version of Hot Pursuit, or a PS1 rip?
Where would I look? I downloaded the Mirrors Edge theme just yesterday off of PSN...Any features added after custom themes often has problems like that if new versions of themes aren't created, which is why Alba is constantly updating his GT theme.
Your best bet is looking for updated versions of your theme.
Hey guys. What FILES type for videos can my PS3 play? I have some movies on my PC that I would like to transfer to my PS3. What is the best quality file that it can play? Memory is not a factor so it does not matter if file is super compressed or not, quality comes first.
Also my PS3 is up to date. Thanks
To start with: File types when it comes to video is really just a container. You can have any codec compression contained in almost any kind of file type (mpg, .avi, .divx, etc). This is why you will still on occasion find people who have problems running something like a .mpg.I think .avc is the file type for true HD movie files that the PS3 can play.
Processed on PS3. PSP doesn't have the memory to temporarily copy over all the game files and process them. Of course, this means you may be dealing with some lag issues.I guess what I'm asking is does PSOne games on remote play send the game to the PSP to process, or does it process the game on the PS3 and just send the video.
To my knowledge none of the official themes have gotten updated. But there are plenty of sites where people make their own, many that are often equal to or better than official ones (see alba's), and if you use your PS3's browser it will copy the file directly to your PS3 for you.Where would I look? I downloaded the Mirrors Edge theme just yesterday off of PSN...
FREE MOVIE ALERT
In case anyone hasn't heard yet, if you register your PS3 with DivX.com you will get to choose a free movie download from: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Two Weeks Notice, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Batman Begins and Green Lantern: First Flight. I got Green Lantern, as I already have Batman Begins on Blu-Ray.
I have no clue. I saw it on Joystiq last week and tried it out over the weekend. You will have to install free DivX software on your PC. I already had the software, so I didn't even have to do that. Then the download goes to your PC and you need to find a way to move it to your PS3. Green Lantern was ~800MB.How long is this going to last?
I thought that the PS3 still couldn't do .mkv. If it can I'll be fairly angry at the dozens of hours I spent converting my ripped DVDs to .mpg.If you have surround sound in the video then you want something like mkv or divx that can handle it. Some mp4 converters may do surround sound too. If you want to keep subtitles then definitely want something that can do mkv (mkv is what the PSN Video Store uses, even though they don't have subtitles on their movies).
Hmm. I'll have to look into it more. Am I correct in thinking that you don't need a wireless router to use Remote Play? Back when my PSP was working, I think I set it up on a friend's PS3, but I can't remember if that was before or after we set up his router. My PS3 as it is has a hard line, but I don't own a wireless router.Processed on PS3. PSP doesn't have the memory to temporarily copy over all the game files and process them. Of course, this means you may be dealing with some lag issues.
Wait, you can do unofficial themes on the PS3? I did not know that. I think I should read around some more.To my knowledge none of the official themes have gotten updated. Oh, I'm all over Ace Ventura. I hope it will fit on my hard drive.FREE MOVIE ALERT

Well, I could be mistaken because whatever their DRM'd videos are using is placed in an .mkv container. I may have fallen into the very trap I warned about regarding file extensions as containers. I just didn't think they would be hiding codecs inside containers.I thought that the PS3 still couldn't do .mkv. When doing Remote Play locally your PSP can access the PS3 directly as a hot spot. When looking for an access point it will see the PS3 (assuming the PS3 is in remote play mode. Thsi is how Ad-Hoc Party works too. For that your PS3 must be hard wired and then the PSP uses the Wifi to connect. But if you are away from home your PSP must be able to access wifi.Hmm. Yes, but the newer dynamic themes can only be made on a dev kit. Custom themes can be made and plenty do them, and you can have multiple wallpaper images so that they switch out every time you come back to the XMB. Alba would be better at giving you info on this than me.Wait, you can do unofficial themes on the PS3? I did not know that. I think I should read around some more.
It should be under a gig. So, it is likely.Oh, I'm all over Ace Ventura. I hope it will fit on my hard drive.
Keep in mind that I never actually tried running them. I just assumed that they wouldn't run based on anecdotes I had heard (usually along the lines of "PS3 is teh suck for not playing my illegally downloaded anime"). I'll check when I get home.Well, I could be mistaken because whatever their DRM'd videos are using is placed in an .mkv container. So lets say I was at school (which has Wifi) and wanted to play the PSX game that is in my PS3 at home. Would the PS3 need to be connected to a Wifi network in order to play, or would it work with the hard-line?When doing Remote Play locally your PSP can access the PS3 directly as a hot spot. At worst a simple DivX conversion is all those guys need.Keep in mind that I never actually tried running them. Assuming your school's firewall plays nice this setup should work. In the settings you can also set your PS3 to start up on connect. Just make sure your PS3 is set to auto-login to the same account you are using on your PSP.So lets say I was at school (which has Wifi) and wanted to play the PSX game that is in my PS3 at home. Yeah, they don't work natively. Maybe PSN videos have special types of .mkv files. At worst a simple DivX conversion is all those guys need.

Thanks for the info.it will actually work a little bit better that way, however there will still probably be lag issues which for many games is a PITA. I just switched my PS3 back to a hard line and I've noticed much more smooth remote play since then.
Thanks a lotNow, to the original question: What would be best for you is based on what you have. If you have surround sound in the video then you want something like mkv or divx that can handle it. But what the PS3 can play is a lot. It can even play ripped raw DVD .vob files, but then you are using a ton of HDD space. If I have something that is in an mpg or avi or similar format and isn't too big already the first thing I do is copy it over to see if it will work without any editing. That will be your best quality.
I personally like DivX as the PS3 is an official DivX player. I use Dr. DivX to convert, and it has tons of options for resolutions, bit rates, sound type and quality, .etc to allow you to find your preferred balance of quality vs file size. You can get that for free online. Just Google it.
