PS3 General Discussion

I have no clue. I saw it on Joystiq last week and tried it out over the weekend. You will have to install free DivX software on your PC. I already had the software, so I didn't even have to do that. Then the download goes to your PC and you need to find a way to move it to your PS3. Green Lantern was ~800MB.

I signed up with Divx and downloaded Green Lantern. I didn't download their software because they don't have a Linux compatible version :ouch:👎

Has anyone played the PSP F1 games and F1 Championship Edition? I loved the PSP games, and I would be all over F1:CE if it was roughly the same thing (from the demo it appears that the games would be, with the same menu structure and the same developer, but I'm not sure).

Umm, I don't know if you still want to know, but yes, they're almost the same, just graphics are better on PS3, obviously. 👍

I just got myself a new PS3 (250GB Slim) for my bedroom to use as a media hub and Blu-ray player. But for some reason I can't get the BBC iPlayer icon to show up on my XMB. I have the most recent Firmware, it's a UK model PS3 and my PSNID is on it and that has a UK address. My other PS3 has the iPlayer icon but for some reason this one doesn't. I wonder if it was because I got the Firmware download before I put my PSNID in? Os course, you can only do it that way round as I couldn't go onto the PSN until I got the latest Firmware. Anyone know how to solve this? I can get the iPlayer via the browser but I'd prefer the XMB icon.

Finally, it's here. :) After almost 3 years of wanting it, dreaming about it (literally - 3 times lol), I have it :) It's unreal.

I was the biggest duncecap ever.

I got hold of a deal that was a steal. The Boxing Day Sale started at 8pm last tuesday, and there were limited in stock, I got hold of one, feeling ever so proud as the next morning that console was wiped off the website.

160gb + Uncharted: Drake's Fortune + Infamous + Killzone 2 for $299.

When I got it i played for about 30 mins and had set up everything, HDMI and surround sound. I come back after dinner and suddenly no discs were being read, I did a bit of research and was determined to try and fix it next morning. The stupidest part was that there were about 3 more other things I could have tried to get discs to be read and shown in the Game menu, but I FORGOT. I could have sent it in to Sony while I was under Warranty, but I FORGOT. I could have even went as far as asking my friends for help, but I FORGOT.

The next day I was walking to Future Shop with a PS3 bundle in my hand. Can you possibly imagine someone walking to the store with a ps3 rather than walking out?

I'm still dwelling over this absurd loss. I'm an idiot, [/end whine & rant]

Thanks for the heads up, though I've already bought F1:CE.

You know, I had never been able to partake in the awesome of Remote Play with my old PSP. Now that I have, I have to say that it is the coolest thing you can do on the handheld (that Sony approves of).

I couldn't find YLOD topic + there is no specific topic for PS3 malfunctions so I decided to write in here - hope you don't mind ?

Well my PS3 ALMOST "died".

The symptoms are as fallows:

There is no picture via HDMI cable. I have checked 2 cables and nothing helps + it is not the case that there is no picture at all, the problem is - my TV recognizes that there is some signal but picture is totally grey, you can't see anything else. I switched to 576p via scart cable and it works :/
So it is possibly HDMI port problem - any suggestions what could I do on my own ? Maintenance is going to be too expensive for me at the moment :/

60GB version, bought May2007 so no warranty :/ and to be clear I do care of my PS3 - I mean I clear it with vacuum cleaner every week or two...

I was playing a lot of MAG beta last few days and the PS3 was at the highest or almost highest cooling level all the time... I noticed that hot air has an "exit" right next to HDMI port... + only recently I started to turn the PS3 with the button at the beck (after of course turning it off via XMB first) maybe that has something to do with that.. - any suggestions ?

PS: I am sorry for such a long post.

Hi
I just encountered a problem that is probably very easily solved.
Earlier today I plugged my PS3 into the TV with an HDMI cable, no problems there, it auto-recognised the HDMI cable and I had a beautiful picture in 1080P. I am back in my room now without an HD TV and so am trying to use the scart cable. But oh no, all I get is a blank screen... Nothing comes up on the screen saying "Oh look, your back to a scart cable, lets sort that for you sir". Nope, all I get is a blank screen. All I see is myself staring gormlessly back at myself.
Any clues?
Thanks
Allyn

I am pretty sure the issue is the PS3 still thinks it is seeing through a HDMI cable and with you try to use a non-HDMI after that it kinda freaks out. There is a way to reset the video setting when starting up the PS3, but I am not exactly sure what that is. Someone else should be able to chime in and help you out.

Found this:
Playstation 3 Forum
Turn the console off, and turn it back on by holding the power button for 5 seconds. This resets the AV settings.

Did a bit of reading on another thread on where I got the above quote and apparently the PS3 will bleep a second time.

Found another bit of information that be helpful:
Another PS3 Forum
Turn off the power to your PS3 and then turn it back on again. But when you turn it on, hold down the power button until you see something on the screen.

When you hold down the power button of the PS3 when you are turning it on, it completely resets the video settings to the most basic settings (480p I think) so that it'll work on any TV or monitor.

Once you can then get something on the screen, you can configure the video settings to match the TV you are hooking up to. You'll probably have to do the same thing when you take it back to your original location.

If you need further help, just Google PS3 HDMI to SD and you should get quite a few results.

Have you tried to use other stuff with that particular HDMI port and/or tried your PS3 on other TVs?

Now I'm a little bit astonished - I got up turned on my PS3 just out of curiosity and it works back again ...
This time I plugged it into port 3 in my TV..
So there are 3 possibilities - 2 out of 3 HDMI ports in my TV got broken (and all 3 are next to each other, probably on the same electronic tile...) or there is some mechanical damage to my PS3 HDMI port, or some electronics in my console got overhited after all these MAG sessions...
Any ideas which one is the most probable ?
I do not want to do a test and switch to port 1 or 2 in my TV at the moment :D

Worked like a charm! Thanks bud! 👍

I have tested HDMI ports 1&2 and console works on them too, so it is definitely PS3 problem. I have remembered one more symptom - from time to time (like once per 5 days) while I watch some avi files (like game trailers) or play games picture would simply go "snowy" (black and white dots and nothing else) for about 4seconds and then go back normal... - anyone had the same thing ? or have you heard about that kind of thing before ? If that is electronics in my PS3 I'm cooked because only buying new one could help me with current service prices :/ I'll play some more MAG if picture goes down again due to overheat its definitely electronics :/

Looks like I'm having an overheating issue lately, my PS3 goes on higher fan mode really quick after I turn it on, but that's ok, what's alarming tho is if I play certain games it goes on highest fan mode very soon ( after ~10 minutes ). And I mean highest, just like when you do a fan test. It's really irritating and I'm not sure how to fix.
Games running fine ( for many hours ) :
Tekken 6
RE5
GT5:P
NFS:Shift
GOW Collection
there's more, but can't remember now...

Games with issue (after ~10 minutes ,everytime ) :
GT5TT Demo
Home
Dirt2

:(

Any ideas what I could do? Maybe open console and clean?

FYI I'm on FW 3.15 and out of warranty :/

What part of the world do you live in? This past summer my PS3 would go into its higher fan cycle pretty frequently, but with the recent cold spell it has been as quiet as ever.

Just buy some compressed air to dislodge the dust inside (careful to keep the can upright so you don't accidentally put liquid into the console) and then vacuum it out. See if that helps.

Strange that some cause a problem, and other don't. Just check those discs aren't scratched.

Yeah, kinda strange, but I think it's just applications that 'stress' the PS3 more than others (... like home e.g.) and I checked the discs don't have the slightest scratches, also GT5TT demo or PS Home isn't on a disc, obviously. :)
However I'll try cleaning it somehow and maybe replace the cooling thingy on the processor as I have a strong feeling it'll die soon if I don't do anything. :ill:

Heh, that's good on you, but I live in Germany, it's winter here and it's extremly cold ATM... in summer it was superhot, but my PS3 was super-silent. :sly:

I guess it's just dust, but I have to open it in order to clean, cause if it's dust, it would be in the bottom, where the huge fan is located.
Well it's really irritating, because it gets so loud... just thought maybe it goes away after it cooled down again or something, I really hate the idea to open my ps3. :dunce:
Thanks guys. 👍

I just replaced my 40GB HDD with a brand new 320GB HDD. I ran into a problem halfway through, but it just turned out I needed to download the latest firmware and install it via USB. I'm just waiting for my data to restore now, then I can play Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (yes, I'm a bit late for the bandwagon) and install PlayTV. 👍

Anyone else having problems with BBC iPlayer working properly?

I click on say, Episode 4 of the latest season of Top Gear, and it takes me out of iPlayer and to a Top Gear website. Likewise, it's done it with QI too iirc.

Every time I try using it I get a message saying that it isn't available in my region.

But I am sure that doesn't help you at all.

:D

No it is going to happen. It's already been confirmed straight from the horse's mouth. It's nothing to worry about though, they're just going to start charging for access to betas, Facebook connectivity, and other stuff like that which many people (such as myself) were never that interested in to begin with. The basic PSN access will still be free.

Wow, I can't believe how quiet my new Slim PS3 is. Money well spent, I hope. So long it doesn't break down, again.

I do notice the BD noise, more. Now, I know I can hear it more since the fan noise is so low, but not just that, the BD makes more noise. I could be the smaller size allowing me to hear more of it, too.
