PS3 General Discussion

Anyone else have their screen flash bright green a few times while a game or movie is loading? Mine started doing that after I downloaded the TT demo and it's really annoying.

Mine will occasionally flash to the "no signal" screen on my TV as the signal switches, but that is the only flashing I have had. I have never heard of that screen being green before, but that might be what it is doing.

mine has always flickered a little upon switching to HDMI to play the PS3, I'm fairly certain it's the TV though since it's a cheaper model. It's never concerned me much as it doesn't seem to have gotten worse over the years and the worst case scenario is I have to switch back to component then back to HDMI to clear it.

I've just fired up my PS3 again for the first time in ages - for reasons other than watching a Blu-ray anyway - and am checking out the store... great to see you can rent HD films straight from the PS Store, but I don't have enough room on my HDD to download a 9GB file - I take it it doesn't let you save the film to an external drive, or does it stream the movie? If you have to download it to the HDD, does anyone know how long you get the film for?

I'm not positive and I'm too lazy to look it up but my TiVo lets you keep movies for 30 days before it's removed, if you've watched it or not. Once you do start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish it or re-watch it.

Edit: I decided to not be so lazy and discovered that it's not 30 days but 14.

Cheers 👍

I don't think I'll use it much right now anyway, since my Lovefilm subscription works out alot cheaper, but it is quite cool to be able to access some new films in HD earlier than I would if I waited on Lovefilm.

Funnily enough, I have enough space to download it to my Xbox, but not to the PS3... but the same film is 10p more on Xbox, and I also doubt that streaming is a good idea on my connection, and I wonder how long such a huge download would take... for some reason, the same film is 9GB on the PS3, and 11.1GB on Xbox 360

You also have to download the whole thing before you want to watch it...

I did it with XMen:Wolverine - 6.5Gigs in HD (which was a lot lower than I thought it would be) - I downloaded it on the Thursday night so I could watch it on the Friday!!

All in all it worked well - although I have a lovefilm account too - so I'll use that more - it's also cheaper!

Resolution, codec, bitrate, combinations of the three, etc. - there are numerous reasons as to a difference in file size.

The reason I don't use the PS3 rentals is I can rent the same movie at the video store I drive past on my way home for less than half the price.

It doesn't stream? That sucks.

Netflix FTW!

Does the PS3 offer Netflix streaming yet or no?

As far as I know...

But streaming isn't good enough on my connection anyways - it can struggle on iPlayer!!

Same here... I just tried (and failed) to watch the "Preview" of Inglourious Basterds on the PS Store, so I reckon streaming is out for the time being.

£4.49 for an HD rental is very expensive, especially when it takes ages to download. I reckon I'll stick to the Blu-ray disc rental route for the time being...

Agreed - it's OK for the one off film that you fancy for that weekend or something when lovefilm hasn't delivered something you want to watch (i.e. your missus choice!)

Dont worry about preview for IB - just get it!?

It's a great idea, alas, the implementation isn't quite so good. Their market researchers failed, because quite frankly, there is a huge potential there. I've been tempted on numerous ocassions, but why bother? It has to offer something as a product, which afaik, is that you can get them slightly before they come out in the shops. With both price and massive download sizes being two big problems. Particularly considering quite a lot of people have GB limits and/or pretty slow connections. How long would it take me to download 9GB? I can get about 800kb/sec on the PS3. I reckon about 3 hours, quite long. I can go down to my video store and back in 20 minutes.

Of course, in 10 years time, we'll all be laughing, but hey, that's 10 years, when I'll be 31 :nervous:

I cannot confirm anything that I say goes for Europe as this is all based on my SCEA video store experience.

Rentals: Available for 14 days, or 24 hours from when you begin watching it. Attempting to watch it as it downloads counts as your start time. If your connection is fast enough though you can watch it as it downloads, as if it were streaming. Can also watch rentals on PSP if you haven't started it on your PS3 before copying it over (Possibly just SD though). This has come in handy for my hospital stays.

Purchases: You only get to download it once, so don't delete it. Purchases can be backed up on an extrenal HDD, but only viewed from your internal HDD.

My take on the video store is that unless they offer a rental subscription or fix their DRM I am not using it.

Netflix FTW!
Their streaming service is low on new and high quality content though vs watching, say, Gamer in HD now (Just naming a new movie this week).

For months now.

Since October/November, judging by this post: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3617056&highlight=netflix#post3617056

PS3 requires a disc until later this year, but I find its UI better than the 360, and it is less quirky if your connection is slow. On a slow connection (my Internet was acting odd) my 360 just kept saying I would have buffering issues and then appeared to load until I lost patience. On my PS3 it loads up without giving me any sort of warning and just buffers, but will build the buffer if I just pause it, which my 360 doesn't seem to do.

Overall, the PS3 loads the software and videos faster, but the time is lost in digging out the disc. The PS3 also has some odd screen ratio thing where it will stretch a 4:3 image in a lot of the videos without an option to switch it off.

Currently I use the 360 version more just to avoid switching discs out, unless my Internet is acting weird, in which case I move to the PS3.

The other bonus is that the PS3's browser can be used to edit your queue too.

As I announced in the Announcements thread, it seems as if the streaming service has just added Top Gear Series 10. So, last night I watched them sail the English Channel in amphibious vehicles a pickup truck with an outboard motor strapped on.

I probably have already asked this question in this thread, but does the PS3 support the Guncon 2?
Is that the PS2 version? I thought it had to hook up via composite cables and the PS2 controller port. So, possibly not. Maybe with a DS2 adapter and a composite connection.

They did make a new gun with the PS3 version of Time Crisis that, I believe, used a Wii-like sensor bar.

Nah. The Guncon 2 is a composite cable, but it plugs into the USB port instead. The original Guncon is the one that uses the controller port/composite hookup.

Old news is old. I don't know why Yahoo is so late to the game with this, but I'm seeing it posted everywhere again.

I had not seen this news. Thanks for the link R1600Turbo! 👍 Very neat to see the Playstation 3 being further used in this way. I had previously read about a physicist doing something similar, but with eight PS3, instead of 2,000+ that the Air Force is going to procure.

I got a questiion u guys. Before my PS3 got a YLOD, i could turn on my PS3 and it automaticly go to AV and be in XMB. After i got the Ps3 slim i have to manually go the channel to see the XMB. Any idea what happend?

Is it the number one scart/hdmi port on your tv?
When I had my Ps2 in the number one slot it automatically changed AV I think. :)

Finally made the jump to a next gen system!!! My good ol PS2 has served me well over the years but it's time to step up. Already set it up, updated the firmware and ran the first level of MW2. Words cannot describe how epic this thing looks on the 46" HDTV.

Any tips for some cool demos and free stuff to check out on the Playstation store. Not really looking to spend any more money on it until I get paid at the end of the month. Will probably download the Heavy Rain demo tonight since my friend says it's quite good.

U could try checking Home or get some demos like

- LBP
- Heavy Rain
- Super Rub dub :D

U could find some cool themes or the one from alba that is really cool.

Have fun and welcome to the Club:tup:
