PS3 General Discussion

It also plays several games much better than when they were on the PSX. For example, Driver 2, which had hideous slowdown on the original PSX, stays planted at 60 FPS no matter what is happening on screen (though there are occasional graphical glitches).
For Driver 2 in particular, the performance was so much better that I had to relearn how to play the game.

I have never been able to play PS1 games on my PS3 successfully, they always lag really bad. I have no idea what I am doing wrong either.

I don't know which games you tried, might be a good idea to change the playback options of you have problems (texture filtering).

Not everyone though, it has the same PS1 emulation as the PS2, some games don't work properly.

PS2 fats ran them in hardware. Ps2 slims was software and did not run ps1 games in progressive scan or upscale them like PS3 does. Best feature will always be unlimited memory cards.

I still think it's a bit strange that the Slim plays PS1 games but not PS2...maybe Sony can release a PS2 emulation firmware update in the future for the PS3.

Not going to happen - Sony removed PS2 backwards compatibility from certain models for a reason (whatever that reason was); they won't be adding it back in.

they never said they wouldn't add it back in. It is a little crazy that they got rid of it, though. It shouldn't be too hard to firmware it back in, though.

It is impossible to add using firmware alone.

Its becoming more and more obvious that the reason was so various publishers, including Sony, could squeeze more money out of people by offering HD reissues.

that's true, I guess. The GoW Collection, the Sly Collection and the possibility of the Ico Collection have all been released or announced. It's an awesome idea, though. :P

The fat PS2 couldn't playback all PS1 games though.
NASCAR '98 for example didn't work on mine and there were some more.
I think the official number was ~800 games that were supported.

Colony Wars would freeze before the ship launched on Ps2. I have not tried in on PS3 though.

There were benefits to PS2 playback on PS3, dare I say again, unlimited memory cards plus all games in progressive scan. Ther should be no worry about HD versions PS2 games. I doubt there will be more than 1-2 per year. Sly Collection is a fantastic deal for $40. I never played the sly games and i have more interest in that than the ps2 versions i could get for less money.

I am not that interested in the Sly Collection, but I bought the GOW Collection
even though my PS3 has PS2 capabilities. The price difference wasn't very big and it had HD and trophies.

I would be suspicious of HD collections being the reason for the removal if it weren't for the fact that the collections I would want I will buy anyway.

Now, the rumors of downloadable PS2 titles on the PlayStation Store sounds like a much more likely candidate.

Or it could simply be that we should take Sony at face value that they saved $28 a system without PS2 compatibility and now all these new possible ways to get PS2 games added in are them trying to respond to consumer demand.

my next two games will officially be Tales of Monkey Island ('cause I LOVE that series and that's the only one I haven't played) and GT5 Prologue.

Anyone else having problems logging on?
Cant reach any playstation server at all (even the website is down...)

Properly maintenance, which could be better done on a monday... not in the weekend :(

I was experiencing a similar issue earlier, it logged in fine at first but then kept disconnecting and eventually I couldn't sign in at all. It's only just resolved itself within the last hour or so. My brother's XBOX Live connection has been fine all day.

EDIT: It's back again...

btw. for anyone looking to buy a 120GB PS3 Slim, there is something you should know. My PS3 only reads 111GB total. That's probably because of all the firmware updates and things, but, just a warning. If you're expecting to get a full 120GB of room, you won't be.

No, that's because it's 120 "short" GB - 1 "short" GB = 10^9 bytes, so 120 "short" GB is 120 x 10^9 bytes; a "long" (ie proper) GB is 2^30 bytes (1,073,741,824 bytes). 120 "short" GB is 111.7 "long" GB (120 x 10^9 / 2^30). Similarly, the 250GB unit is actually 232.8 GB.

Companies always use base 10 when describing drive capacities, even though that's not the system the drives themselves use :)

Yeah, I would hope anyone who knows anything about computers and such would know that. It's nothing new. Put the same HDD in your PC, format it, and it'll still read 111gb.

Because I have absolutely NO knowledge of computers, whatsoever... could someone please tell me whether a HDD like this would work flawlessly for a PS3?
I'd like to pimp my playstation.

Quick question

For pretty long time PC monitors have been selling with 3D feature.

So any 3D monitor will work on the PS3 and 3D? Its so much cheaper over HDTV 3Ds as well it would be awesome for Multi Screen PS3 GT5 game, if it supports it. All in 3d!

nVidia 3D Vision is different from the 3D technology that most HDTV manufacturers have been pushing. It is a proprietary technology that only works with nVidia cards and certain monitors.
