PS3 General Discussion

I think I have to renew soon, Its been well worth the $18 I paid for the 3+1 months, WELL worth it. Will pay end up getting the 1 year deal for $50.

But I have not heard about the U.S. content yet.

Its false advertising because if someone rents a game or buys a used game they WILL have to pay to play it online. Which means it is not free to play the PS3 online. THATS the false advertisement. And unfortunately the online pass trend crap is growing. I seriously had no idea the PS3 was doing it too until I rented Uncharted 3 this week and went to play online. I just couldnt believe it. The selling point of the PS2 and PS3 was that you could play online for free no strings attached. They are going to start losing that selling point if they start charging to play online. Thats not going to be good for Sony Playstation marketing. All these years of "well at least we can play online for free" are disappearing. Its also the one feature I loved of the PS3 was that I could indeed play online for free.

I agree, with the on-line pass thing Sony, EA etc has effectively killed off the PS3 rental and game trade in market. I think its disgusting that they should take a cut for what is private property and when they launched the PS3 they promised free on-line gaming for everyone owning the system, not free on-line gaming only for those who buy brand new games.

You have to understand that games costs money to develop. Especially multiplayer games. It takes a lot of man hours to design, code and develop them with alot of bug creating possibilities.

Online pass is a way by which publishers can see some money at least funnelled to developers. You see in the movie industry when you rent a film some money does go to the studios but nothing happens when you rent games.

So if you pay for a full game then there is no online pass but if you rent then expect to pay some cash. I see no problem with this. Personally i buy my games all new but i am i am incredibly choicy on what i buy

Comparing used & rented games to stolen games is a massive fallacy.

Are you referring to my statement? The only common "fact" is they are all means of obtaining a game without supporting the publisher or the hardware manufacturer, that's it.

I do not think Sony, EA, Activision etc. cares about non paying customers, and why should they? My PS3 is free to play and always will be.

I'm referring to anyone who says it, and the truth of that "fact" is incredibly shaky because it ignores how used and rented games had already been purchased once whereas a stolen game (obviously) was not.

I'm referring to games already purchased that were stolen. I should have made that clear.

My curiousities continue with the PS3. Over the weekend, I had to buy a new keyboard for my PC since the one I've used for nearly six years finally decided to quit on me. So I found me a USB-powered HP keyboard (not wireless) that I attached to my PS3. It worked right away without having to configure anything. I had gotten the hang of typing up stuff using the DualShock 3. With the keyboard, it's MUCH easier to type things up. Not that I've gauged myself, but I think my Words Per Minute is twice to thrice times better using the keyboard as opposed to using the DS3 to put in messages.

I know I have the 160 GB slim model, but I actually wanted to see if my system could even read my PS2 games. And... all I'd get is "Unsupported Data" when trying to load them. It is pretty sad reverse compatibility was sacked. That's why I'd see certain full PS2 (and even PS1) games in the PlayStation Store. I wonder if there were memory limitations or something to where PS1 and PS2 games. You almost basically will have to sell off your PS1 and PS2 games if you don't have at least a PS2 to play.

They do sell many PS1/2 on the store and that's probably the reason they got rid of the compatibility, they could have lost a lot of money.

I am still unsure of this, as you can still buy PS2s. If the PS2 as a whole was off the market I would have no trouble believing this was the case. But you can still buy the system, it did have backward compatibility at one point, and it was a year later that downloaded PS2 games became available, and not teh greatest titles at that.

Now, if we want to talk about HD upgrade collections, I think that has more merit.

I THINK that originally (can't remember which model) it was reduced to software based emulation when it was originally hardware?? If that is true then I think that could have been an effort to reduce the cost.

I had the original 60GB "PHAT" and the emulation on that wasn't great, definitely didn't show off the PS2s best capabilities. Could have been to prevent the PS"s rep from being tarnished?

Except the US (and Asia?) had hardware compatibility at launch. They even released PS2 titles in boxed sets, like the MGS collection (which now has a nifty HD collection), and there were even new games for PS2 being released that were comparable to Wii titles.

I've got a USB problem. It shows up fine on the computer for the record.

I put the usb stick in and it shows up but get this it then disappears and then re-appears over and over like a connection problem. I press triangle I only get info and not display all, sometimes it'll allow me to see the content but then boom it disappears again. I managed to back up GT and fifa but that was pure luck. Basically it disappears and re-appears and I can't see anything on it now.
Maybe a fluke when I saw content on it last.

It's almost as if the Ps3 is saying " Here you go...woops, you can't use this stick" every time the tease of a thing! Lol.

does it do this with everything thats plugged into that port? If not it might not like that particular one for some reason.

Back up the data on your computer then format the USB stick? That might help.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU KEEP A COPY OF THE STUFF ON THERE!! :dopey:

I need some advice from FPS junkies. My girlfriend got me the Move sharp shooter for Christmas but I'm torn between the software available for it. KZ3 looks very appealing but I see SOCOM 4 also has support for it, or is there another game I should consider? Many thanks.

I have only played the Kz3 Demo as I have not fired up the full game yet but I've had a great time with the Sharpshooter with it. Socom4 isn't bad with it either. I'd go KZ3.

When you have correctly calibrated the sharpshooter, Killzone 3 is excellent! It takes a bit of jiggling around to get it so it stays correct, I found to have the camera slightly to one side.

Being playing with GT5 Wipeout HD, GTR2, rFactor.. sometimes I feel the need a game to slow down and chill a bit, I need something not very tricky, but not a piece of crap and not a racing game. I played Art of Murder on pc and it was nice, (a point and click adventure) I also read some ebooks here and then but I'm wandering if there's something interesting for PS3. Nowdays developers and pubblishers only care about the ultimate FPS which is kind of lame. Anyway thanks in advance.

With a bit more money, I've long wanted to get "Saints Row the Third." However, it's still about $60 USD. So I started to think of what else to get. I kind of want to play my first DiRT... which would be "DiRT 3." Being the purist, I haven't been sold on the DiRT series because I am such a veteran of the Colin McRae Rally series (I still want to get CMR 2005 for my PC) that I usually fail to give any DiRT a chance. But if I do jump into the DiRT series, my first one will be DiRT 3.

I think the old girl is deteriorating :(

Don't get me wrong as some people on my friends list will testify, its had some good quality usage out of it. Bought it in June 2009 (Its a fat), so its about two and a half years old. I should mention I look after it properly, always dusted it, unfortunately the vents on the side don't have much ventilation but there's not a lot I can do. I'd been worried about the state of it since GT5 and all the things people spoke about their system dying. It all really started about a week ago when I wanted to free up space on the HDD, so I attempted to delete my Resistance 3 game data. Only for it to take an age counting it and crashing when trying to delete it. Its still on there as corrupted data.

Then the last couple of days I've had network issues, which although some can be attributed to my router (PS3 is listed as Nat 2) the real drama happened a couple of hours ago. When booting up GT5, it crashed during loading so I decided to do a reset via the power button. Which didn't happen so I had to use the emergency switch at the back for the first time since I bought it. That bought up a "Not properly shut down" hoo-ha. After searching the file system it seemed happy enough. Then when trying GT5 again I was getting some silly numbered errors I'd never seen before. Right thats it, disc out, don't wanna lose it in a YLOD. Then when I try shutting down, it takes an eternity, with the green light flashing on and off for ages before coming to a halt.

I'm out of warranty so if I wanna have another go, I'll either need to buy a new one or repair the old one. Only going to do the former because I'm useless at consoles. Do you guys think this set of circumstances I should worry about or just go about my normal business? I'm going to try backing up and formatting tomorrow, is it really worth the hassle?

Furthermore for a new one, I want to ensure a smooth transition to it so I need advice. If I was to backup and use the restore function on a new Slim, would that be possible? Will it be simple to log back into the PlayStation Store and download everything I've bought? How do Trophies work with this sort of thing? And is the new Slim also reliable and can I put my faith into it? And to be honest, how much better is it then a Fat?

Thanks guys.

Definitely back up the data asap, as far as I know the restore function should work fine on any ps3 but someone else will have to say for sure. You can always copy your games saves separately on to a thumb drive so if it goes all at once you'll have the most important things.

Unfortunately my Iomega HDD isn't recognised by the PS3 :(

Plugged it into the USB port and still it says "Please plug storage media into save destination"

Buggeration, got most of my saves done though. Except for Saints Row 3 which won't copy. Assholes :(
