PS3 General Discussion

Three things I wanted to share...

Last night, I noticed in the PlayStation Store there is something you can install to play PS2 games that allow HDD support. I think I have one or two PS2 games that have install options. Not sure if I want to give this PS2 thing a whirl or not.

I've been watching certain YouTube videos on various PS3 games. You know, I'm becoming a bit more convinced on the following games:

* MAG
* Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (except I heard the single-player deal can be completed in a few hours)
* Saints Row 2

Part of me just wants to get some more of the big-name titles just to be among the rest of the PS3 crowd. I don't want to be just about racing games. Speaking of which... I am starting to lean more towards getting "NFS: Shift." I do eventually want to get to "NFS: Shift Unleashed 2" (or whatever it's called). And just to say again, if I do get NFS Shift (which is a Greatest Hits title), it will be the first NFS console game I will have ever owned.

Let me get back to Saints Row 2 for a moment. The way I've heard of this game described and in seeing a video on it, I really feel like this game is even more silly than the GTA series, especially GTA3-GTA:VCS. So I am becoming a lot more convinced that the Saints Row series is fairly legit. So much so, that I just can't seem to connect with GTA4. It's like GTA4 became TOO much more realistic and not really as fun as the previous generation of GTA games. I would feel a bit like I am missing out on the real story of the game if I don't play the first Saints Row. With Saints Row 3 to be released in the near future, SR2 should hold me down pretty well. Only negatives I've heard about SR2 are cumbersome controls and not as good driving mechanics. So I may decide to get this game and add it to my collection.

One last thing... I am considering buying some of those PSN cards and redeem them to get stuff off of the PlayStation Store. There are some downloadable games and stuff I wouldn't mind buying online. For instance, I may join the TDU2 crowd that has the Casino feature. I feel this is probably the best way to make money without racing.

So my options are really open now.

I don't think those PS2 data things work, I think they were meant for the old fat PS3s that were backwards compatible, but by all means, give it a shot! :)

Yeah, I read that the PS2 HDD deal doesn't work for the 40GB old PS3 units. I should be in the clear with my 160GB slim.

After watching a few videos on YouTube, I've decided on a few games I want to go get to add to my PS3 collection.

I tell you- I'm becoming really impressed with Saints Row 2. I know the third title is coming out (and looks ridiculously fun), but I think Saints Row 2 is going to keep me busy for a while. The game just looks to be very fun. I guess for me, Saints Row 2 is somewhat the sort of humor and insanity that I wished the GTA games held onto. Maybe not as over-the-top, but Saints Row 2 looks like it will fill a void left over for me from GTA4. One thing I learned is that there was never a Saints Row 1 for the PS3, so Saints Row 2 would be my debut for this series.

The other game series I'm looking into is "Need for Speed: Shift." I seem fairly convinced to start off with "NFS: Shift." It's a "Greatest Hits" title from what I've seen in stores. That way, I won't have to pay as much to get it. Then eventually, I may move up to "NFS: Shift 2 Unleashed." I'm going to tell you the truth- Shift 2 Unleashed scares the hell out of me. It may have the most unreal sense of speed and drama of any racing game I've ever seen or played. Shift 2 Unleashed is the kind of racing game that can give you nightmares just playing it. Once you crash or get taken out, I'd get an uneasy feeling in my stomach after each crash. At least, that's the feeling I got every time I saw the driver crash in a YouTube video review of NFS:S2U.

Part of me was even looking at "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" and "Killzone 3," because part of me says that at some point, I'll have to have at least one modern first-person shooter game like almost everybody else. I don't want to be just racing games, so I feel like I'll have to get a modern first-person shooter. In one of my past posts, someone mentioned MAG. I saw a video on MAG and found it pretty interesting. Can't even imagine 256 players all going at it in the same game!

But I may get Saints Row 2 to add to my collection. If I have a little money left over, I'll get "NFS: Shift" as well.

Any rumor on a new racing game for PS3? This year wasn't that great, only Dirt3 really worth the money, Test Drive Unlimited was a fail, Shift 2 a bug fest, F1 2011 has some frame rate issues, Nascar 2011 is basically oval racing, Need 4 Speed the Run is arcade. I have Dirt 2 and I'll buy Dirt 3 as soon as I finish it, I'm quite happy with the Dirt series but a want another racer, on normal circuits. Grid is very very arcade. We all have GT5 but I think we need at least another decent racing game on PS3. Seems like all these developers only think about the next ultimate crappy first person shooter...

Any new racing game in 2012 for the PS3? Thoughts?

I bought Saints Row 2 earlier today. It was great because it's a Greatest Hits title. I was unable to get "NFS: Shift" in addition to SR2, but I could only manage getting SR2. There was "NFS: Shift 2 Unleashed," but I feared I didn't have enough money to get that along with SR2.

Today, I made my debut in Saints Row 2. I made a somewhat nerdy-looking character in the game. Even wearing a backpack! Most of my fun was kind of short-lived since one of my PSN friends wanted to go co-op with me. So I never got to really explore this game as much as I could.

My initial reaction to this game is that this game is vastly more controllable and customizable. The gunplay and some of the combat is very good. The Fine Aim feature really gives you some solid control to take down enemies precisely. Driving and riding are pretty good as well. However, I haven't yet did anything like burnouts or something. Exploring the city was pretty fun as well.

Very interesting game so far. Already having more fun than what I was able to do in GTA4. I do feel a bit sad that there was never a Saints Row 1 for the PS3. I kind of feel like I've missed out on a great deal of the storyline since not having an XBOX 360 to play the first game. Regardless, it is very fun!

I recently bought "NFS: Shift." Now, I could have bought both "Shift" and "Shift 2 Unleashed," but I chose the first one for now. Liking the experience so far.

Nt sure actually...looking pretty bleak for racing games. :nervous: The Run was hilariously bad!

Shift 1 was an interesting game, had some great ideas which were marred by lackluster car graphics and some forced melodrama and broken physics. I bought, and enjoyed it, but always thought it was such a shame to see just how close they got to making a great game.

It was a great game to me once I got past some of physics and sterring issues. But Its an enjoyable racer and a good one. Great rack list too and its drifting mode with a wheel was fantastic once you tweeked the steering. To me it felt like a Sim racer you would find in an arcade.

LaBounti, you make a fair comparison regarding "NFS: Shift." I've stated online that this game provides a racing experience I've never experienced before. It has a character to it that is unique. And needless to say, this experience coming from a Need for Speed game. Most of what I've played so far is just insanely immersive. No Hollywood antics, no illegal street racing nonsense, no "street cred,"... it's just hard-fought racing. Maybe a little overdramatic, but still a great title.

I wanted to talk more about this game elsewhere, but most of the topics in the Shift forum concern "Shift 2 Unleashed." By the way... this is a game where the best way to enjoy the on-track action is from the interior. I've rarely used a chase camera to see the action. I do use it sometimes, only to see who is close by.

Again- this is a Greatest Hits title for a reason.

One thing Shift does better than pretty much every other racer is racing immersion. It never feels boring. The AI is aggressive and the threat of crashing feels real, the motion blur and pov changes really draw you into every race.

After finishing NFS Shift there wasn't much for me to still play it. A shame, because its a good game.

Saturday i bought F1 2010 and Fifa 2009. F1 2010 felt very different from any other racing game i've ever played, and the graphics make me learn some of the tracks over again.

Fifa 2009 is even better, not only i can finally play with my friends, but the matches are good, loads of teams, altrough i miss the PS2 functions of creating your own teams, and having a store to buy stadiums and all. But maybe i'm wrong, they could be there, altrough most of the game goes to a broken server.

Yes, F1 2012 and 2 obviously bad NFS games. :indiff:

Because I am not good at formula racing games and mods, I would be skeptical at even renting the Codemasters' F1 games. I also have my fears of thug AI stemming from my ToCA Race Driver series experience. I've never been intrigued about the DiRT games because I still miss the Colin McRae Rally games. And make one thing clear- ANY racing game will never surpass any first-person shooter or action game. Us racing gamers are basically a niche market. I still want to get "Shift 2 Unleashed" even though people have said it was full of bugs. I am happy with "NFS: Shift" that I want to eventually take on "NFS: Shift 2 Unleashed." The only game in my PS3 collection that has disappointed me to not playing it much anymore was "Grand Theft Auto 4." Only other title I haven't played much recently was Super Street Fighter IV.

Other PSN friends often influence my decision to get certain games. Eventually, I want to get me one of the more popular first-person shooters, just to say I have it and play it. The of-the-moment title these days is "Call of Duty: Black Ops." Some other person suggested MAG. I was even looking at Killzone 3 and the Dead Space games. Even old-fashioned me kind of wants to play and own a good modern first-person shooter.

Though this is not the thread for it, I am looking forward to "Saints Row: The Third." It is a future title I'm looking forward to.

Don't even bother with Killzone 3 until you finish KZ2 :) But get Dead Space, that was my 2008 game of the year. And my only Platinum..

Well I just got a call from my girlfriend and I get to join the extra special club of triple fail PS3s! For the third time a 60gb PS3 has given up on me which leaves me in that lovely time of year where I get to phone Sony seeing as it is becoming a yearly thing for me now. More to the point I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how to retrieve my Battlefield disc if need be or indeed any way to get a more updated version of my saves though I have SOME back ups.

The symptoms are identical to my last one, it turns on, goes green then yellow before flashing red and won't eject in that time from what I'm told.

I have to say the recent PS3 advertisements are showing false advertisements and misleading customers. They keep saying "Play online for free". I realize its their slogan against the 360 but its not "free" anymore. If you rent or buy certain used games you have to purchase the online pass to play them. Plus there is the full updated version of PS3 online called "PSN plus" I think its called which gives you all the goodies for online. So the PS3 technically isnt so free anymore if you want all the features or want to play used or rented games. I realize its not as expensive as the 360 but its still not "free" anymore. $49.99 for a year. http://us.playstation.com/psn/playstation-plus/

Playstation plus doesn't have to do with playing online though, just discounts in the ps store and some added functionality. Also Sony is not responsible for games that decide you have to play online. I wouldn't consider it false advertising at all. If you have a PS3 you can play other people online without paying a dime.

Perfect example. See even YOU are mislead. I have a PS3 and rented Uncharted 3, I cant play online without PAYING for the online pass. I cant play online for free. Battlefield 3 is the same way. This is happening with more and more games. Also without the PSN plus you dont have all the features the PSN has to offer. It is no longer free thus false advertising.

I haven't been misled and I do understand the point you are making (I think it's a despicable trend and one that hopefully goes by the wayside). It's not true for all (or even most?) games, and it's not something Sony has direct control over (though naughty dog is a sony subsidiary I think so it does get a little foggy there). If you own an X box you have to pay Microsoft in order to use this functionality and that is the distinction IMO it's obvious that Sony is making. Again, I don't see how this is false advertising.

Its false advertising because if someone rents a game or buys a used game they WILL have to pay to play it online. Which means it is not free to play the PS3 online. THATS the false advertisement. And unfortunately the online pass trend crap is growing. I seriously had no idea the PS3 was doing it too until I rented Uncharted 3 this week and went to play online. I just couldnt believe it. The selling point of the PS2 and PS3 was that you could play online for free no strings attached. They are going to start losing that selling point if they start charging to play online. Thats not going to be good for Sony Playstation marketing. All these years of "well at least we can play online for free" are disappearing. Its also the one feature I loved of the PS3 was that I could indeed play online for free.

I think the understanding that most people have is that free to play was in regard to monthly fees. Online passes are not monthly fees that compare to an xboxlive subscription. I don't like it either, but somewhere along the way they decided that the licenses they are giving you to use their software are only for one PSN account. When you rent a game, you have not purchased the license to get full functionality. Charging for additional online passes has nothing to do with Sony so I'm not sure how you can twist this to be false advertising. Since online passes started, used games (and I would think rentals, but I never rent games) have had warnings with them that the additional pass would need to be purchased to get full functionality. The PSN service is still free...

Its not false advertising in the slightest. The Online eco system Sony has created has never required its users to pay a dime to play online.

PlayStation Plus isn't required. I have it because is just awesome to get free content and the "additional" fetures are a nice bonus.

Renting is just like borrowing, finding, stealling or buying used. Sony or its Publishers are not seeing any profits for those methods of obtaining games yet have to support the servers. The passes make up some loss profits. Even some XBlive games have online passes. It doesn't even apply to all games as that how you make it sound.

I'm not a big online gamer. So XBL is worthless to me and a poor value. PS+ is a great value and the 3mo I paid $17 was well worth the money that I will buy a full year. I've gotten my monies worth in 2 months.

No, you just want to blame Sony for something they didn't do, or did you conviently forget that it was EA that started project tendollar as a way to combat used game sales?

He cant blame Sony, only himself...

"Part of the reason for the online pass is that when that stuff goes online, it isn't free. We have to pay for servers and all this different stuff to maintain it, and so at some point, you know, games have to make money.

"It is a business, and we just wanna be able to continue to provide that kind of content. If Sony ever comes to us and says 'You're not making enough money on this, you need to cut it' or whatever, that's not something that we want. We want to be able to maintain the level of quality of the product that we're giving out."

"The other thing is that even if you do buy it used, it's worth the price of that online pass just to get all that content, because there's so much stuff.
"It's either that or we offer online completely in its entirety also, so we have a complete offline package as well, so if you want to play the co-op with a friend, you can do that offline."

The only Advice is beat the single player and move on :)

True. Now I don't want to go off tangent, but in the publisher's eyes, buying used is piracy because the profits are going straight to the game store, and not them. That is why Capcom pulled the non-eraseable save in that Resident Evil DS game. Any little thing to convince us to buy new.

I have a quick question concerning the 12 games being given away by PS+ this December. Is it only SCEE? As I am not seeing anything to deal with it in the PS Store.
