Sony's put in a new patent for a potential Wii killer controller which has an interchanble button layout (via faceplates) and can also split apart.. so you could arrange a side in the shape of a gun, sword etc etc with the buttons of your choice. It also uses ultrasonic location (like bats) to locate where it is... they have used this to likely get around some of the Wii's IR patents.

From Gamespot...

Sony patents new motion-sensing tech

USPTO filing reveals break-apart controller that incorporates ultrasonic sound capture to improve console's ability to judge distance and movement.

At the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata debuted the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to much fanfare and intrigue. Not a year later, former Sony execs Ken Kutaragi and Phil Harrison used Sony's E3 2006 stage to reveal the game maker's own motion-sensing controller, later dubbed the Sixaxis. However, rather than the universal interest that greeted its contemporary, Sony's device quickly drew fire as an "us too" peripheral that was as much of a surprise to the development community as it was to gamers.

While Sony has since distanced itself from the Sixaxis, the motion-sensing tech, along with rumble support, returned with the controller's successor, the DualShock 3. Now, it appears as if Sony has further plans to iterate on its visceral input device.

Last week, Sony Computer Entertainment of America's patent application for a new input device emerged in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database. The application, which was first filed in June, details a new motion-sensing controller whose most distinguishing feature is its ability to break apart and be put back together in a variety of formations. The patent application also details a "hybrid video capture and ultrasonic tracking system" to deal with motion-sensing.

Detailing the need for the sound component of the tracking system, Sony's patent application reads: "Current object tracking suffers in capture accuracy. This problem arises because conventional image analysis can only produce somewhat reliable measurements of the location of the user in two dimensions...Broadly speaking, the present invention fills these needs by providing methods and systems for establishing communication between a computer program in a computing system and a controller to be held by a user in order to determine the three-dimensional location of the controller."

Sony's pending patent then details how its new motion-detection method "captures one-way sound communication" to provide the gaming console with a third dimension of where a player is, while a video device such as the PlayStation Eye handles the other two dimensions. The device also accommodates accelerometer support to determine the controller's orientation.

Along with an exceedingly lengthy and esoteric description of how, exactly, the device works its mojo, Sony also submitted a wealth of pictures demonstrating the controller's practical use. In one sketch, a man stands several feet away from a wall-mounted TV equipped with a PSEye-like device. In his hand is a mock-up of the controller, which has been assembled into a rod formation. On each bulbous end of the rod, sound emitters complement the image captured by the digital camera.

A second image of the device shows a traditional gamepad layout. It also shows how the face buttons can be removed, presumably to allow for the device to be reoriented in a new position. As seen in one other drawing, these button face plates can be secured to the individual pieces of the device.

Yet one more image shows what clearly is PlayStation 3, appearing to indicate the new controller will be introduced for use with the resurgent console. However, often patent illustrations are for illustration purposes only, and do not serve as confirmation of use with a particular piece of hardware.

Doesnt look particularly attractive at the moment but if this goes through we can all get rid of the Wii and have next gen motion games on the PS3... YAY!

Looks like Sony want's to take a slice of Nintendo's cash printer, not for me though :)

It looks like two Wiimotes that can be assembled in different ways, including something that looks like a conventional controller. Very nice. 👍 I think we will see similar controllers emerging for Xbox 360 as well.

Am I going to be the first one to say this? It looks like a strange female sex toy.....

Sadly I think so.

I like the idea but...ugh, I got rid of the wii for a reason. Poor graphics and childish games. The ps3 will have childish games with good graphics. It's just not a good thing for the ps3. I like how the sixaxis is hardly used in most games but in the games it is, it is used well. If the controller becomes something where you control everything with the it, I dont want a ps3 anymore. Go back to ps1, everything was done with buttons, the way it should be done. I dont want sony to become a nintendo clone. We have already stolen triggers and thumb sticks and motion sensor off of nintendo. That is as far as I think it should go.

Hope your listening Sony:) Good job on the ps3:tup:

It's not like everyone would STOP making other games just because a new controller released.

If this comes out, it will likely come bundled with a PSEye and some other software.

I think we should let this come in the next generation of the Playstation as I'm just fine with a sixaxis.

@ND4SPD: I agree with you.

interchangeable button plate? Pretty cool. One device multiple configurations? nice. Eye Toy required? expensive!

If it is true, I'll buy it.
I never bought wii, because of simplistic games for all E (everyone) and not too many ADULT games like Sony offers. So yeah PS3 might become a Wii for adults in HD

What does a type of controller have to do with the type of game you're playing with it? Games on Wii are mostly childish because that is their target market, it has nothing to do with the controller.

Have you ever played an FPS like Red Steel or Resident Evil 4 on the Wii? Hardly childish, and the Wiimote + Nunchuk works really well for FPS games. 👍

So yeah PS3 might become a Wii for adults in HD
+1

If they could make games like Resident Evil 4 with PS3 graphics, sound and possibly a bit more accurate controller, it would be awesome!

Think wii with PS3 graphics. Thats how amazing this could be.
I for one can see the possibilities, it could be awesome! :)

Agreed. I can't believe some people are complaining that Sony are opening up possibilities to give better control and feel in shooters & sports games on a forum where said same people are willing to spend £150+ on a steering wheel to turn imaginary cars.

I'd be all over this if the software backed it up :)

Having motion controls doesnt mean the PS3 will turn into the Wii, it will just mean that Sony will be able to claw more of the casual market particularly with young and old gamers which that console is aimed at...so games that a Wii esque will be develop but normal titels will not be effected.

Think of it potentially being the best of both worlds on the PS3.

Time to bump this back up, today we finally saw the result of the patent made last october. Its still an engineering prototype but what did people think of the device and the demonstration?

Robin.

I pretty much crapped my pants when I saw it in action, and for a prototype it looks very well made. I then continued to crap my pants at the GT5 trailer!

That is insane, I will totally buy that when it comes out. The bow and arrow mechanics do look pretty awesome as well. Something like this would be great in a game like Assassin's Creed 2 or something similar.

I saw the demonstration live yesterday, and it looks very cool! Opens up tons of possibilities indeed! 👍

The arrow bow was awesome! :D

When I saw it, the first thing that came to my mind is the fact that for the first time, I was looking at something that could come close to the precision of a computer mouse for gaming.

Some new news!

Sony has just filled a patent for Emotion Detection technology which will be used as part of the motion controller, PS Eye etc etc package of interative technologies everyone is trying to push seeing the success of the Wii.

The system will detect smiling, laughing and a range of other emotions I guess adding other level to the gaming experience. So if you look scared the game will make it even scarier! :nervous::sly:
