PS3 Motion Controller 'Playstation Move' Thread

Well thats a relief, I was worried that this functionality wasnt shown in the E3 press conference like when they did the Tiger Woods 11 demo and 'Tiger' wasnt moving on the screen as the guy was, it was just his arms. I hope Sony go off and create something new (even a tech demo) to show that they can offer comparable full motion cap to Kinect.

I could have sworn all this time MS has been saying that full body motion cap is not possible without stereoscopic cameras so its great if the PS eye can do the same with one. The only problem is that it cannot swivel (I sense a base add on coming!).

What would be particularly great would be the have your PS Home avatar mimic all you body movements rather than those pre defined ones we have now. It would make the experience spookily realistic and would add a whole new level to Home.

Robin.

While I of course can't 100% confirm it, it does look like its already integrated in one title.

Download the E3 video for The Fight : Lights Out, in which you see someone 'head-butt' the opponent, which certainly doesn't come from the move controllers, rather from the actual player performing a head-butt.

As I say without trying it personally I can't confirm it 100%, but that's certainly what it looks like its doing.

That or just follow the link I gave for Kung Fu Live. It does not use the Move controllers at all. It uses full body skeleton tracking and even scans your image into the game as your character.

A really good tech demo video from Eurogamer, hit the link for the video as it's not youtube so can't embed it. It also shows the full body and face tracking in action.

The Future of PlayStation Move Tech Demo Video

During E3 2010, Digital Foundry had the chance to sit down and talk in-depth with Dr Richard Marks, one of the creative minds behind EyeToy and the new PlayStation Move. It was a great opportunity to learn more about Move and the creation process behind the project, and the conversation left us hugely enthused about the potential of the new controller.

This week Marks was in the UK to talk in more depth about PlayStation Move and to showcase some of the superb technical demos his team has created. These demonstrations are used by Sony itself to give game-makers some idea of the sheer diversity and flexibility of the new controller - and it's fair to say that the scale and scope of what we saw here far eclipses anything we have seen in any of the launch titles.

Thanks to a superb assist from Eurogamer TV, we're able to bring you Richard Marks' entire presentation, complete with direct feed video of the demos in action. Put simply, this is brilliant stuff.

First impressions of Move - especially from the initial GDC showing - revealed a gameplay experience not a million miles away from what you see on Wii: with a range mostly consisting of fun, bite-sized, mini-game style titles, designed to appeal to a certain type of audience. Titles like Move: Start the Party, Sports Champions and TV Superstar are clearly targeted at the same sort of audience that has lapped up the Wii style of gaming.

But what Richard Marks' presentation shows is that clearly, obviously, Move offers so much more - and the games we've seen to date only hint at the potential. Sure, the utilisation of PlayStation Eye does make its way into the launch titles, working best in Move: Start the Party. Here, the 60FPS camera feed is used in-game, with 3D rendered objects convincingly added into the video in a technique Sony calls "augmented reality" - a unique selling point in the battle of the motion controllers.

But in terms of the gameplay experience itself in these launch titles, the ultra-precision of Move isn't really a major factor in how these games actually play. What Marks' presentation focuses on is how that precision can be factored directly into producing control systems and gameplay we've never experienced before, and how PlayStation Move is capable of things that neither Wii nor Kinect are physically able to replicate.

The tech is there, the libraries are there, the broad concepts are there and the raw potential shown in these demos is startling. The question remains whether the will is there amongst developers and publishers to create Move-exclusive titles that fully utilise the outstanding potential of the technology...

Clearly the Mercedes of motion controls, it will cost more individually but by far the most advanced. And its geared to all gamers and games, not just family games. It will be as good as the games that are made for it. Tech demos show use what it can do, the games will tell us if we should buy it.

Well I have to admit to having two move controllers and a copy of Sport Champions on order.

Getting good write-ups as well

I would love to get a review or gameplay video of the disc golf. In Tiger Woods it had horrible flight physics. The quality of disc golf will likely be make or break for me as the cost is not worth giving my golf simulator (Wii) an HD upgrade.

I had a go with a Move controller at the Sony centre a couple of weeks ago. I didnt realise the glowing ball was squidgy rubber! I suppose thats to stop people smacking it into someones head.

I demo game they had was Kung Fu Rider and my experience with it was utterly terrible. The game was very unresponsive to the movements and there was a massive amount of lag. I am sure it was something to do with the fact the PS Eye was not mounted correctly and was pointing mostly upwards to the ceiling. Not the impression Sony employees should want to give to potential buyers.

Eventhough my experience with it was poor the controller felt great and I'm sure its either the game developers did a rubbish job or the camera wasnt calibrated correctly. All I have heard is good things from everyone else including reviewers. I really want to have a go with Sports Champions but for some stupid reason its not coming to the UK. I might import the US bundle.

Robin.

i preordered it as well (1x move wand, 1x nav controller, 1x starter pack, and the sony recharge station + Sports champions)

Can't wait to try it out with MAG and i was waiting the whole time to replay Heavy Rain.

@Robin : according to the reviews i read, The Kung Fu rider game has it very poorly implemented. Sports Champions got the best reviews and has apparently no lag just could get boring relativly quickly.

I've already got the PS Eye that came with EyePet so I may just get one controller for now and try out the demos before I buy any full games. Also in case you were wondering it's been confirmed that a load of games will be patched to be Move compatible so you don't need to buy the Move edition of them (EyePet, Heavy Rain, Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition etc).

I'd heard the same about Kung Fu Rider being pap but Sports Champions and Start The Party are meant to be good. It's good that these casual games are lower priced (UK £25) with only the more serious games being priced at the normal rate.

Sports Champions is coming to the UK or do you mean as a bundle?

Yeah I meant the bundle, because I also need the camera. Why does the UK have to have just a demo disc bundled?

I'm glad to know that other people had issues with 'KFR' and it wasnt just my experience. When they have Sports Champions on a public demo somewhere I'l give it another go.

Another thing I was wondering is how are people going to play the Sport Champion sports which require 2 move's (like archery) or can you play with just one?

Thats pretty much what the early reviews said. Its one of the worse games but the controller its self is good..

The only thing that mildly attracts me is the gun peripheral. Couple that (a semi-realistic feel of a firearm) with good tracking and good shooting games, and the thing sounds like it might be a good experience. I'm not too big on motion gaming, sadly... but I guess the fact that both the wand and nunchuck (don't know the SONY name) have buttons make it a lot more worth it than the Kinect.

I remember I was very impressed at the first E3 where they presented this, but at the end, it's still motion gaming. I'm not saying what I've seen is not impressive, it definitely is, but in my own humble opinion motion gaming is at least one generation away from the refining it needs.

Robin: you just need one, but enhanced by having two (ign article)

Cool, thanks :)

Sony annouced the other day a recommended 8ft of space to use Move properly (and MS say 10ft for Kinect), so everyone better get organising your rooms!

That sounds like arm span room. If you have used a Wii without hitting anything you should be OK.

Some harsh words from Kevin, its bold. Sony is basically saying Kintecs games suck.
The Kevin Butler angle works. And because these are done in a joking manner Microsoft can't really have another ad that pushes back against anything, like we saw in the early days of this console generation with all the comparison charts. If Microsoft releases another comparison chart in response it will either come off as a copy or them taking a joke too seriously.

In comparison to videos of people flailing about, with or without some form of remote in their hands, these kinds of things are much better. Somewhere in Sony's marketing team someone recognized that people look silly playing motion control games, and decided to embrace that in a way that allows them to mock the console war too.

Even their Move-tage ad showing people playing makes on giant joke of it by comparing you to ancient warriors in a Viking opera.

Let's face it, the whole Kevin Butler thing is genius. SONY really hit the jackpot with that guy and obviously the new advertising agency which is responsible for him.

I really laughed when I saw Kevin Butler in an episode of Greek.

I just got an email from amazon.uk that sport champions has been postponed to next year???
WT*

Has it really changed, or did amazon messed up smething???

Maybe the European version of the game has been postponed because they havent done all the languages. I don't think the US version has been delayed, it can't be because its part of the main selling bundle!!

Robin.

I had move starter pack bundled with my PS3 that was on order from Amazon but the other day they told me it was delayed till 1st October!! So I'm not sure if there is a bigger delay at hand?

Maybe someone at the Sony R&D department of awesomeness (Kevin Butler) tried the Move before going gold and realised that it doesnt actually work!......:scared:

Seriously though they dont want to start this off on a blunder because it will be like the PS3 launch all over again. Any excuse for other systems fanboys to decend like vultures!

Robin.

Yeah like kinect voice recog. working only in 4 countries at start ;)

I think it's amazon.uk releated. amazon.de & .fr still have them on the 15th.

If next week this is not sorted out i will cancel Champions in uk and get it over the .de site.
But it's gonna cost me a few € more ...

Had a check and every other site around still have next week as the date, so it does look like its just an amazon.co.uk issue.
