Devkits look nothing like the retail version.
This is what the devkit of the PS4 looked like for example:

Oh my bad. I just hope that the actual one would look really cool and awesome.

Whatever design the PS5 could have in the future, one thing for sure is that a slim version would follow since that's always a norm for Sony's main consoles.

As a person who works within the design industry, I am telling you right now there is no way in all that is heavenly that that will be the final design. Sony is an enormous company with hundreds of minds working on this one product. They simply would never ever let that design through even one level of production. It’s hilariously poor in every conceivable way.

If I turn out to be wrong on this, then I will laugh for about 6 months. I will also potentially perish from shock.

Which design, the dev kit? I mean... no production unit has ever looked like the dev kit, so the vehemence I think is a bit wasted here.

Oh I understand that. There are still some people who seem to think that it’s genuinely likely though. Or even remotely possible.

Which is the whole point of the dev dev kit design. It leaks and people talk about it. That's about as good as free publicity gets.

Maybe it's just were I was in life at those times, but I dont remember seeing much about the PS4 dev kit. I do remember the PS3 though. But also not PS2.
It grows on you. I think it looks cool now and want one.
I honestly liked it from the get go and am sad its the dev kit. I hope they do something similar. I want something less boring than the previous 3 systems. I want to feel bad about it being tucked on a low, out of view shelf, not be inspired to.

Maybe you can provide us some minor details or clues here on how the actual PS5 would look like, considering what you really said

which suggests that you're showing some ingenuity about it.

In what aspect were they boring to you? The looks?

No, it doesn’t. It suggests that I know when a peice of design done by a multi million dollar company with likely tens of designers working on the one product looks like that, it is not the final design.

I just dont like the sorta modern industrial look that started with the ps2. All black and hard lines. They weren't bad designs, I just dont find them very attractive.

It's a shame you dont work for Sony then aye, but idk, maybe that's the difference between a multi millions and a multi billion dollar company?

Yeah, black has been standard for its consoles since the PS2. Should be grey or silver again.

With the PS5 on it’s way in a year, the PS6 should be close behind. Any leaks on the PS6?

I’m building my collection of new and vintage consoles.....it seems like. I’ll have a console collecting dust by every TV in the house! It’ll be like my own private arcade!

It would be cool if they would some special edition runs that ran in the 10s of thousands unit numbers rather than 100 or so. Or like the GB color, where there were several different colors to pick from. Or maybe have swappable inlays and accent pieces, then sell different colored and/or patterned variants so people could build their own theme.

I wonder if specs for PS5 will be as follows:
  • 48 CU (3,072 Stream Processors) Navi GPU (RDNA2 features) at 2GHz giving 12.288 TF rounded up to 12.3TF on TSMC N7P DUV process. Seems like they got a clever cooling solution for it.
  • 3.6 GHz Zen 2 CPU, hopefully it is not lower clocked than that as important for car racing simulation games physics for CPUs to have high clock speeds. Hope they can push it to 4GHz if they do CPU and GPU separately instead of making it into one APU like currently on PS4.
  • SSD I think will likely be using something like 128-layer TLC 3D NAND on launch, hopefully they offer 1TB and 2TB versions at least. Seems like it will be a very custom solution that will ensure better game performance than anything possible currently on PC so quite exciting going back to how things were like in the SNES days of instant loading and low input latency.
  • Hopefully Wi-Fi 6, 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Would make transferring between new PS5's in the future much faster), Bluetooth 5.1, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 ports, spare / upgradeable M.2 Slot and HDMI 2.1 connectivity.
  • A more capable ARM SoC for rest mode that doesn't need to power on main components to download stuff.
  • 4K Blu-ray drive with CD playback support, we need PS1 disc emulation support back hopefully with PS2 and PS3 added in as well as the already known PS4 backward compatibility.
  • I do hope they go for 16GB HBM2E game and UI RAM and 4GB DDR4 system RAM type solution instead of the 16GB GDDR6 solution.
Looks like it is going to be quite a beast, hopefully it is about the £499 or lower mark. Will be a bargain if they manage to make it for that price, even better if no loss to them so they can invest more money into better first-party games. Big up to AMD and all the foundries and designers helping make this possible as otherwise probably need something like $1,000+ subsidy per console to make this happen now. So many years of R&D costing billions of dollars will have gone into making this possible offering it to us consumers at the lowest margins which a lot of people won't appreciate.

Good thing for next-gen consoles affordability is that TSMC look like they will have N6 process ready for end of year 1 revision (2021) to bring the cost of the CPU and GPU down with marginal cost or if they want to invest more to save more they will have option of N5 (2021) and N5P (2022) so they can reduce production costs and form factor quite quickly into the generation and even a further step in 2023 with N3. I wonder if they will improve clock speeds as I can see Microsoft will try and beat them if they get opportunity if they launch weaker. Sony didn't do it for the Slim PS4 unlike Microsoft who did for the S so any marginal clock speed increases could swing performance crown for marketing but also make frame rates more solid. Maybe they won't do a Pro version this time around given how powerful the base system is so they have more room for making a step with PS6 and just focus on getting the PS5 cheaper in the here and now. I think a bridge interconnect system to link two consoles or more up would be another solution to this.

Anyway looking forward to February 2020 when they look like they will announce it maybe with new GT game announcement, I do hope Mark Cerny stays around to deliver a next-gen portable gaming device for 2022/2023 too. This is going to be such a huge leap in performance in all areas, it is like two generations worth given PS4 was more like a PS3 budget remaster. They look like they have got all the low hanging fruit this time around with the right kind of architecture without any big bottlenecks. Going to be quite a landmark for modern gaming, truly a game changer!
