Alright, here is my attempt at a race report of my experience at the Ring yesterday.
Lap 1 was uneventful compared to what others have reported with me simply following Dennis wake while trying to not overshoot any corners since the draft made trailing another car a horrendous experience. Coming onto the straight at the end of the lap I used the tow from Dennis Honda to slingshot past at 190+ MPH. I looked back to see if Ansem was on my derrière but was surprised to see that he was unable to keep pace. I figured he had run out of gear and was bouncing off the limiter. Across the stripe it was Brosif, Den, Tony, and Ansem.
At the end of Lap 3 I made my first pit stop, coming in with a ~2 second lead over Tony. I took 25 (or 22, cant remember) units of fuel and exited with Tony directly behind me. We eventually swapped positions on the Lap 4. My objective was to stay close to Tony so that I could take advantage of any mistake he made since I could tell that he was fighting his fat GT-R more and more the deeper he got into a tire stint. The only problem was that the draft was killing my rhythm so I decided that I was going to back off a couple seconds then slingshot past right before our next scheduled pitstops.
Well Pflanzgarten had other plans and on Lap 5, just as I told myself to back off Tony, I tried to carry too much speed through the right-hander after the jump and put my left side tires on the turf. I knew I was on my way so I whoa-ed up as much as I could and managed to get away with a lazy quarter-spin that had me nosed in against the inside Armco. I checked my map and saw Ansem down the road a bit so I backed it up to get off the racing line and waited for him to come through. When I saw the interval to P1 at the next split I told myself good job, Jamen, way to muck it all up and put my head down to see if I could eat away at the ~20 second gap to Tony.
I made my second stop at the end of Lap 6 while in P3 having whittled a few seconds off the gap to P1. I took 20 units of fuel. Dennis either forgot to pit or was out of sync because when I exited the order was Tony, Den, Ansem, then me with P3 still out of sight. Well Den must have made a mistake going into Aremberg because he was way off pace and on the outside of the turn. I went to the inside of the track to overtake him but he came back across the track so I checked up and went around the outside. I could now see Ansem in P2 and, remembering he was short on gear, knew I could slingshot past him and break the draft.
The gap to P1 had shrunk to ~7 seconds by the time I made my third and final stop at the end of Lap 9. Having taken extra fuel in my first two stops my crew chief/race strategist recommended taking 15 units of fuel, I opted for 16 units. Well, I dont know if Tonys crew decided he needed 40 units of fuel or he had damage to repair but I ended up getting out of the pits a full two seconds ahead of him. For the next lap and half I focused on driving as fast as I could while ensuring I didnt make any mistakes. Tony must have had a few moments with his porky, blue godzirra which allowed me to pull out a 10-12 second lead.
Then I looked at my fuel gauge and grew slightly (understatement) alarmed by the seemingly insufficient amount of fuel remaining in the tank. At that point, I cursed my race strategist (and myself) and decided I needed to start conserving fuel if I wanted to make it to the end. I dont know if it actually helps in GT5 but I was lifting off the throttle, rolling through corners and short shifting everywhere I had the chance. It wasnt until two-thirds of the way through Lap 12 that I realized I was going to make it and that I better step on the GO pedal if I wanted to keep my ~3 second lead and bring this victory home.
I gave a Hans Stuck fist pump as I crossed the line (10:16)
... while bellowing VICTORY a la Johnny Drama.
