People controlled their cars exiting tight first corners every race this year though.
I understand the concerns and dislikes of the start line at Spa, but changing the location of where drivers need to be careful doesn't change that they need to be careful.
As we can see, 1 driver wasn't quite careful enough.
As for room to avoid cars, did anyone go wide left at all? (off in that huge runoff area) (Edit: checked and not a single car avoided the accident by going into the large runoff area, nor did a single one try)
I think people are reluctant to drive off track to avoid an accident, so by the time we're willing, a crash is inevitable. That's a decent portion of my reasoning on the Kemmel straight.
The extra room at La Source only counts if people use it to prevent an accident. Just like the extra room to the left in turn 1.
Quite frankly this is 3 cars crashing and only 1 more getting caught up in it, so it's not even an issue of a pileup.
People didn't go off because you have to cross the super slippery greencrete to get to the tarmac run off to the left of La Source. At Les Combes people hit up that black top patch with the speed bumps all the time 'cause of missing their braking points under a heavy draft pull so people would've naturally went for it. Hell, there were two choices, you could've gone right into the grass or even just a bit more to the right still being on track but completely off the racing line.
I wish we could simulate this haha, it would be fun to get a full group of 16 people together just to try starting rollers at different points.
