I think the pile-up in D2 first corner was mainly down to different lines 2 drivers took, and once the first hit had happened, that just caused a chain reaction. I didn't know what happened until I saw the replay, I had basically taken La Source very conservatively on the inside, just started to accelerate out, and suddenly was hit in the left back. Didn't see it coming, especially since I thought I was already past the problematic zone. Well, my race was basically done, I got hit one more time in an unlucky incident later on, and yet, I feel like I rarely did such a consistently good race. Just a shame it was in the same race as getting hit.

What I think we could learn from this:
  • If we had actually started at the last line on the floor before La Source, the field would have been more spaced out and probably none of this would have happened. I think the leaders started on start/finish despite what had been said, or at least way before the intended point. I just saw the guys in front of me accelerating suddenly and then we passed a red line and another white line. In any case, the objective has to be to avoid a telescope-effect, and in this kind of situation, where you have a very slow corner pretty soon, I think you have to get the speed down. Adhering to the last line as a starting point could have been enough, but maybe also slower speeds (80 or 60 kph) might be beneficial.
  • Something like a safety-car period after first lap carnage involving a bunch of cars would be a good idea as not someone's whole race is ruined (and I say that from experiencing both sides). The problem with calling for it as one of the "victims" is though, that sometimes you simply have no idea what actually happened. I guess there should be some automatism for crashes involving more than x cars. Otherwise it might get abused for any first lap incident.

Pretty :indiff: weekend for me. The short of it is I brought a qualifying car to a race.

First... did anyone else have frame rate issues? All through sector2 I kept getting inconsistent frame rate, lasted the whole race. Sometimes I'd be coming out of Rivage and the textures would tear while I was trying to find the entrance to turn 11. Really bizzare, came and went randomly from Les Combes to Rivage and then through Fanges and Stavelot.

Trying to qualify for D1 I made the rear so dangerously loose it was a nightmare in the draft and when the tires started to wear. So basically my race was a gifted p5 after the T1 debacle I avoided by being really careful on the outside of the turn, then a first stint of trying to fend off eager beavers behind me while holding on to RT and Dennis.

As the first 10 laps were closing the defending position broke my hold on the Honda/Nissan fight; and then when finally in clean air the tires were rubbish after sliding around in the beginning... and I spun on the hard kerb outside the first turn of stavelot.
Fell from 5th to the 9th I started in between Eddie and Ren.

Pitted on 15... ran around by myself in 10th doing ok pace. Passed petros and nige when they cracked up on kemmel... then passed Eddie for 7th when he decided to do celebratory donuts a lap early. I'll certainly take the finish. Think I got everything I could from the car. Just don't have it at Spa; never really have. Only fun I've had at Spa was the Lambo triplet finale. *shrug*

So I knew this was going to be the worst race for Lexi and I, but I have high hopes for the return to Japan. Congrats to the great pace at the front very rarely did I see a split go by without the gap getting bigger. 👍

Anyone know the time to beat at motegi? I have only done a few practice runs there before. Maybe done 15 laps total, all new to me :)

I haven't run any laps there in the Z yet, but have hundreds of laps in other cars. Love that track. Hoping to do well there next week.

Report.

First of all, I'm so greatful that you guys waited for me.
I think I was lucky this race was already looking at a later start due to the F1 race. So I fighured I had an "extra" 15 minutes to connect.
Once the electricity guy (it was'nt "just a fuse") came (around 18.05), he said he could'nt fix it and need to call another guy to come and sort the electricity outage.
He showed at around 18.30 (GMT), and it only took him a few minutes to sort it.
And with everybody in the room waiting for me made me make the race.
So greatful for that.

Q: Started in 2nd and was really pleased with that.
I ran tons of practice laps and found a close to perfect setup.

R: Once the race started, I had major trouble during my first stint.
Cause once I entered the lobby, I went straight to track. No time for practice (fully understandable).
And since I had'nt touched the car or GT5 since Friday noon (GMT), and had 2 rough nights out, I felt like a sitting duck once the race went green.
Struggled hard to find any kind of rythm, and with maxking39 not leaving me any space, I had to let him go and just try to focus on my own race to find my "groove".
Well, that did'nt work out at all, cause as soon as I had let go of maxking, Jason was on my tail.
At this point, I had a decent pace, and my "groove" at least felt present at times.
With me and Jason batteling allowed maxking to get away safely.
Had a few really nice laps there with him. Good fights.
We had a :scared: moment in the end of kemmel when he outbraked me on my inside, and we touched while turning.. Glad we both stayed on track there. 👍

And towards lap 11, I started thinking about my strategy a bit.
Since I had found the rythm at this point, but my tires was not in perfect shape and us batteling made me decide on an early pit.
And I decided to go in on lap 13.
And exactly during this lap, Jason pulled away from me, and my good old buddy Pag was getting too close for comfort.

Once we reached the bus stop, Pag followed me in to the pits.
He was close to me, and I think he got held up in the pits since his car had to slow down while mine was turning in to my slot.
That extra 1-2 seconds proved crucial.
I entered the track with open track, while Pag ended up in a battle with skengdigi.
But I was now back in my quali "groove" and started to put in decent laps. I believe I had at least 6-8 laps straight in the 14's (have'nt watched replay yet though so could be wrong), and on my 15th lap, I saw Jason leaving the pits just out of draft distance. I pushed and pushed and pushed to reach his draft before his tires was up to temp (and fresher than mine), but failed by what felt like a 1/10 away from succeeding.
Then he found a great pace and slowly but steadely pulled away by what seemed to be somewhere in the 3/10 / lap region.
A really low 2:14 in there I guess.
But as Jason increased his distance to me, I also increased my distance to the 3 following GT-R's. Skengdigi, Pag and Eddie.

So ended up in 4th, and concidering how I started the race, I have to be pretty pleased.

And it's always a pleassure to be on top of my GF as usual. 👍 ;)

I'm looking much forward to Motegi. Think a 1:45 is decent there. (Edit: Listen to Dom's post below instead of the time I thought we should aim for.)
However, I'm going to Copenhagen on Thursday, and will leave Sunday at 11.00 AM (GMT), and since it's a 6.5-7 hour drive from there, I'm 99% sure I'll not be able to host.
And I'm 50/50 of making the race.
Will practice as much as possible during Monday and Tursday, and set my Q on Wednesday.

:gtplanet:

I got every car between 48.2 and 48.5 in pre-season testing at Motegi Basse. 👍

The last 2 races should be extremely even among all cars, no favorites at all. :)

Was going to say 48s CSL, or 47s for Tony ;). Update so I am 50/50 for Motegi as my shift is 12 till rush (When it dies down on orders 5-7pm for day shift drivers..) but I 100% can't make the finale at Suzuka as I am 4pm to close. (Close is midnight)

I aim to Q in the 47's myself Paul, those are test laps from 2.08. ;)

By the way guys, since I couldn't race I jumped onto Spa offline practice quick, to truly test online vs offline, and see if they've become the same as I was told.
Answer: 2:13.1xx 1st lap = couldn't be more definitive.

Still about the same as fast offline as before. Not surprising.

True, but when the physics actually changed along with tuning, I believed it when I was told they were the same now. Just thought I'd share. :)

My day wasn't as eventful as you guys'.

Dom, did you have tyre wear 'on' for that? Personally I've found both Offline and Online to be very close since 2.09. I haven't run much offline though, but I have run some.

Welp, here's how our start went. It was botched because of a lag spike, racing incident I'd say since he waited back:
Had I'd been able to race, I probably would've been caught up in that.

Anyways, hope I can get my team out of the dumps with actually being allowed to finish a good finish at Motegi.

This should be more than enough reason to revert to the Total sign. What exactly was wrong with it in the first place?

That's a good question.
Especially since it was debated a lot prior to the race.

I think we need to put this on the admins.
It was not a good decition from us, no excuses.

Why? If it was caused by a lag spike, that could happen anywhere. We would have got through just fine without it, so I don't see the problem.

Just what I was going to say. I've been testing for the Touge Showdown stuff on Eiger and although the offline seemed to have more grip (both of them set to wear 'OFF') the times were very similar. I would imagine with tire wear 'ON' it would be the same.

I'm not sure I get the reasoning for this. PURE is supposed to be professional drivers, no? We should be able to keep the starting line where it is and not have any issues.

results are up, just need to fill in the D1 finishing times
now that our p6 three-way is broken up... I'll be back Dennis. only 4 wee little points. :D

already have the rolling start, thought that was supposed to make it safer too ;)

No, I have no idea what I was doing, totally forgot grip to real and tire/fuel.

Ran a 2:14.8 just now and seemed identical to online. 👍

2nd place is still up for grabs as I'm away for the next round and Suzuka is looking doubtful too at the moment :(

Well, there was a T1 incident in both races.
And lag will have a greater impact when racing close.
To spread out the field a bit more is always going to reduce the risk. Lag or not.

Incidents due to lag or not will always occur.
If we have 2 T1 incidents resulting in X number of cars getting damaged, the administration need to take the responsibility.
We can't just say "it was because of lag"..

I don't say lag did'nt cause an incident, cause it did (in D1 at least).
But how do we reduce the risk for lag to play such a huge part?
Imo, it's to remove dangerous situations as far as possible, and in this case, the suggestion of starting at poles descretion on kemmel was the best one, and by doing so, reduce the risk of lag effecting the outcome in T1 or in a draft train/pack at high speed approaching a heavy braking zone.

Yeah... hindsightms 20/20 but hopefully Tony and my arguments for the starting point of races should carry more weight by now :P

Would've been funner to start that way too.

@Nige
Very true, if it wasn't for the lag spike there would've been no issue. I don't know what the cause of the incident in D2 was but anyway, we're all up to standard, to the point where we should be able to start wherever we want. As the group gains more experience with eachother these challenging first turn issues should disappear. If we had no one new it would probably be different as well.

@Mule
We wanted to change it up in order to give the pole sitters more of an advantage. Although they still become sitting ducks to the guy behind them directly after the first turn, going through Eau Rouge and Kemmel, it's less than if the race were to actually start on the downhill. Starting under the Total sign also allows multiple cars to leap frog the leaders where starting from before La Source fans out the cars more and in theory (which actually worked in practice, not considering the accident) should be more of a safe lead in to Les Combes.

I find it interesting how 2 lag accidents are bringing up the starting point in discussion.

Can someone fill me in as to how lag cannot happen or is less likely to happen in certain corners/areas of the track? Or did I miss something in translation?

I don't see a problem discussing the start line, but relating lag accidents to the start line is laughable at best.
Every scenario starts with a turn 1.

It's just a matter of damage control, e.g. which starting point can make for, in the event of a lag spike, less cars involved. So, had we used Les Combes as turn one there would've been a lot more space and run off in the case of an accident, less walls as well; the turn was much more mellow of an angle, and just look at how easy people start to fishtail on exit there at La Source by themselves, and we were on cold tires so even if the same type of lag spike happened going into Les Combes I believe we would have better been able to avoid each other as a result of the initial accident, like how I bumped into Nige which didn't have to happen at all.

Got some laps in tonight. Managed a high 48 after about an hour, but I can't even get close to that time until Lap 5. It's going to be a struggle just to reach D1 this time around.

Can you post up a replay or quick video btw? I'd appreciate it.
