Silvia and Miata both get 80/100
now how 'bout them 95 Celica GT-Fours?
I went and bought a light green metallic. I love the color even though it's gay (not that there's anything wrong with that
$17,166 from used car lot. Quoted at 251 hp. Sounds like a good deal to me. I took it to Tahiti for some track tests (seemed an appropriate place to be, what with that fruity color and all). Now I'm here. Bags unpacked. Coconut Maitai in hand. \\
Pleasantly surprised by the dyno results...it's actually got 253 hp, and the torque band from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm is as flat as a mesa.
Decent redline (6,500)...should provide a great launch with the 4 wheel drive and all.
But not as good as I'd hoped. 0 to 60 mph in 6.468 seconds is a lot slower than many stock Lancers and WRXs or 2wd Supras can crank out, but 2nd gear gets you all the way to 61, so that's a bonus.
From there on up it gets worse. The Celica GT-Four slowly builds up steam in the first corner and up the hill, but this is mostly due to tall gearing. From here, you gotta brake. Yup, brake response is okay if kept well-timed and not too heavy. I tried a drift into the chapel corner and had to fight a little to get the car lined up correctly out of the corner.
The handling? Eeesh. The front-end is grippy but the actual steering feels unprecise. The car wallowed around a bit and leans A LOT. I didn't lose much speed in the corners, but this was due to last-minute countersteers and a bit of guessing!
So if you're a newb, don't buy this car, it's a tad more advanced. If you're more experienced, you'll need a suspension right off the bat ($3,000 for sports or $8,000 for semi-racing) ..and a shorter transmission ($6,000) . And let's remove some weight ($32,500 w/o race kit). And full brake upgrades ($16,000). The tires are okay if the car is kept with low power. Now we're cooking! Now it's like a different, car! Much more responsive.
So it is possible to take the Celica GT-Four from a sluggish car towards stardom. Also, we got 3 stages of turbos, intercoolers, etc. which push the power past 450. Good power for lots of racing in GT2, but at this level, the car still seems unsure and sometimes difficult.
It's always gonna be a tuner's project car...not an easy one to win with, but for someone with exp. it can rock.
66/100
