Still more muscular than a Sunbird.

Still more muscular than a Sunbird.

Depends. The Quad Four was a quick engine, but IIRC it had most of its power up high, and it came with a bonus self-destruct mechanism - only you had no way of knowing or controlling when it was going to go off (a general rule of thumb is fairly low mileage).

That car was also available with the V6-190, with a few extra horsepower in later years. From what I've heard though, a V6/5MT variant of that car is rarer than an actual unicorn... and that's the Beretta I heard that about. It'd probably be even worse with the Oldsmobile version, seeing as how Oldsmobile hadn't been GM's performance brand in over 20 years at that point.

The Airflow I nominated is next up to be polled.

I got something truly awesome yet hilarious to nominate later this week once the Airflow poll is made.

1929 Hungerford Rocket Car Prototype
(aka Shirley Lois Moon Girl)

976795b163a4691830903794d97637aa.jpg

Production: 1929
Chassis: 1921 Chevrolet 490 Touring Car
Engine: (Chevrolet) 171 ci I4, 26hp (no torque rating) + 1 gasoline powered forced air rocket (unknown power)
Transmission: Selective-sliding 3 speed cone clutch (Chevrolet)
Body Material: Wood frame covered in 1/8" thick cardboard & linoleum.
Top speed: ~50mph (gas engine), 70+mph (rocket power)
MPG (US): 2
Length of flame out the back: 20 feet

Not the first rocket car, but this holds the title as the world's first commercially built rocket car, as well as the world's first rocket car to be licensed and registered for use on public roads (upstate NY). Yes, it was a fully functioning car.

While this was just the prototype, the Hungerford brothers had planned to produce them. (only the production cars would have been more conventional in appearance) Unfortunately, they were never able to find funding or enough prospective buyers, this was the only one they built.

Is this the coolest car not yet polled or even nominated?

Renault-Avantime-Blue-Side.jpg
Renault Avantime (2001-2003)
Engines: 2.0 turbo straight 4 16v petrol (161hp/184lbfft), 3.0 V6 24v petrol (204hp/206lbfft), 2.2 dCi straight 4 16v diesel (150hp/241lbfft)
Transmission: 6 speed manual, with 5 speed automatic option on V6
Performance: 0-60mph 9.9s (2.0)/8.6s (3.0), Top Speed 126mph (2.0)/138mph (3.0)
Economy: 30.6mpg Imp (2.0)/24.7mpg Imp (3.0)

Possibly the world's only full size 3 door coupe MPV, the Avantime was a catastrophic sales disaster. Just over 8,500 were made in three years and in 2003 they sold just eight in the UK - its biggest export market.

The massive doors were cleverly hinged so they didn't open any wider than a standard 5 door hatchback, the rear windows were dropped when the front seats were folded so you could get into the back more easily, there was a single button that opened the sunroof AND lowered all of the windows at the same time and the rear seats were mounted higher than the front so occupants got a better view.

You'd have to be as mad as hammers to buy one.

1987-1994 Grumman Long Life Vehicle (LLV)

Small_USPS_Truck.jpg

Engine: General Motors Iron Duke ( 2.5 L straight 4 piston )

Transmission: Turbo-Hydramatic 1803 ( 3 speed automatic )

Body: Made by Grumman ( Aluminum )

Chassis: Made by GM

Although production stopped in 1994, the LLV lives up to its name and is still the main delivery truck for the U.S.P.S. They have been in service for 27 years and still have plenty more ahead.

They are well built with all features serving a function. The steering wheel is on the right side for easier entering/exiting the vehicle. The sliding doors allow for more parking options. The rubber bumpers prevent damage to the vehicle and mail inside. The area where a passenger would sit is used as a table to sort mail on.

"Neither Rain Nor Sleet nor Snow" will stop these vans from getting your mail to you on time.

Being the son of a mail man, this vehicle is special to me.

(The information below has been added later)

Wheelbase: 8 ft 4.5 in (2.553 m)
Length: 14 ft 7.5 in (4.458 m)
Width: 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m)
Height: 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m)
Curb weight: 2,700 lb (1,200 kg)

Horse Power: About 90
Top speed: About 70 mph (possibly more, I saw somewhere they could get up to 85)

Current U.S.P.S vehicle inventory: Over 100,000

In 2009 $524 million was spent to refurbish the vehicles, this saved an estimated $3.676 billion that would have been spent on replacing the entire fleet.

They use serial numbers instead of license plates.

They are also used with Canada Post.

(I know one of the rules states to get it right the first time so if you don't want to use this new info, that's ok.)

1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429

96541_Side_Profile_Web.jpg

Layout: Front Engine, Rear Wheel Drive
Style: 2 Door Fastback

Engine: 429ci 7.0L N/A Semi-Hemi V8
Horsepower: 375 (deliberately underrated from 500+)
Torque: 450 lb-ft

Transmission: 4 Speed Manual (No Automatics Offered)

Weight: 3,870 lbs

Length: 187"
Width: 72"
Height: 50.4

Other Info: First Mustang ever to feature a factory rear sway bar, could rev over 8,500rpm for extended periods of time, 1" lower ride height than all other cars as well as other minor features. The engine liked to rev, so lack of low end power made 0-60 times suffer. Unlimited, it's said the car can exceed 175mph top speed (which I believe given Shelby's personal GT500 did it). No confirmed proof however. Power steering was mandatory, but no automatic transmission or air conditioning was offered.
