Ahh...apparently the sight of that car has managed to break the Iceman's state of unflappability? Surely it's a hell of a beautiful thing.

I like to see it as a missing link between the 356 and the 911, even though it's not really that. To my eyes, the intensity of its exterior styling is between that of the 356 and the 911. I'd describe it as having the grace of the former and the sportiness of the latter, making it one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

It's a road-legal racing Porsche with multiple class wins in endurance events, and for that, it's playing a part of what constitutes Porsche's legendary status to automotive enthusiasts.

Yes, it's not as memorable as the racing variants of the 911, or the Group C cars like the 956 and the 962. Its success is not that prominent. Maybe how it's co-developed with an Italian racing firm will make it seem a little bit special. Still, I really expect to see this getting a "cool", at least.

Can't wait for the TVR so I can nominate what could very well knock the Miura straight out of the Garage. Don't you dare vote SU "fer da lulz".

Almost bought an 05 model of this car, it was so damn nice.

Fuel mileage and the shoddy transmission prevented that though.

I bet the 787B thread will unfortunately be flooded with "Seriously Uncool because race car", just look at the McLaren MP4/4 and Porsche 917 threads.

Different thinking is needed when deciding is a race car is cool or not.

Here's how I look at it:

  • Competition history
  • Notable drivers
  • Overall success
  • Design
  • General appearance (Doesn't actually matter, but hey, the Mercedes W05 looks a lot better than pretty much every other F1 car this year.)

For me it's partially that, but, especially if I don't know much about those things, the coolness of the racing series it competed in is also a factor.

2014 KAMAZ Master 4326 Dakar

kamaz-truck-dakar-2014.jpg

KAMAZ are one of the most successful manufacturers ever to compete in the Dakar rally, winning a record 12 times.

The 16.5-litre turbodiesel V8 makes 1,000bhp and Lorde knows how much torque. This particular one was raced by the factory KAMAZ Master team in the 2014 event - yes, once again, winning.

Powertrain: 16.5-litre turbodiesel V8
Layout: mid-engined, selectable 4WD

Power: 1,000bhp
Torque: loads

Good luck, and goodbye Mustang GT-R Concept! Expecting to see you in the wastelands!

And say hello to my next nominee: something of an obscurity.

Isdera Imperator 108i

Isdera_imperator.jpg

Source: This, this and this.

Isdera was a little known German engineering and sports car specialist. Few people were aware of its existence until the mid-1980s, when it launched a supercar called the Imperator 108i. Although it was not the fastest supercar then, it had performance strong enough to challenge many famous supercars. Its futuristic, monospace design had some similarities with Lamborghini Countach (and curiously similar to the later Vector W8). Moreover, with only 30 cars produced, it was one of the rarest supercars in modern time.

The Imperator 108i was originally born as a Mercedes-Benz concept car. Isdera's founder Eberhard Schulz had a close relationship with Stuttgart as he worked as design engineer at Mercedes for 5 years. With the blessing and financial support of Mercedes, his engineering company developed a mid-engined supercar study called Mercedes CW311. Though having no interest to put it into production, Mercedes was willing to supply engines and other components and let Isdera to build the car under its own name. In this way, Isdera Imperator 108i was born.

Despite of its futuristic exterior design, the technology this car employed was not too radical. Like Lamborghini, its chassis was constructed in tubular steel spaceframe. Very wide and tall sills provided the necessary rigidity, but they created problems for accessing the cockpit. Never mind, Eberhard Schulz was a fan of Mercedes C111 gull-wing concept car, so he adopted gull-wing doors in his car to solve the problem.

To keep weight low, the bodyshell was made of glass-fiber. Although the body looked smooth, its aerodynamic drag coefficient was a disappointing 0.38. Well, at least its frontal area was reduced by using a roof-mounted periscope as rear-view mirror. This was the most distinctive feature of the Imperator, although Lamborghini tried that already with its early Countach LP400.

Behind the cockpit was a Mercedes V8 and ZF 5-speed gearbox, both mounted longitudinally. The earliest car used a standard 5-liter V8 with 235 horsepower as you would find in Mercedes 500SEC. That did no justice to its supercar looks and chassis. However, whenever a more powerful V8 was available, Mercedes would generously allow Isdera to share it. In this way, the subsequent cars were powered by 300hp 5.6-liter V8 (from 560SEC), 390hp 5.6-liter AMG V8 and eventually 420hp 6.0-liter AMG V8. Both AMG engines got advanced 32-valve cylinder heads.

According to a supercars group test conducted by German magazine Auto Motor und Sport in 1987 at Volkswagen's Ehra-Leissen test track (which was also published by Road & Track magazine), a 390hp Imperator 108i topped 176 mph, accelerated from rest to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and 100 mph in 10.8 seconds. Although it turned out to be the slowest in the field, its performance was nearly as good as the mighty Lamborghini Countach QV, which was quite an achievement for a little known German supercar maker.

However, speed alone does not sell. The public had never accepted Isdera Imperator 108i as a match to Italian supercars. After 10 years of struggling, Isdera finally went out of business in 1993.

Production Year: 1984 - 1993

Price: $135,000.

Layout: Mid engined, rear wheel drive.

Engine: AMG V8, 390 bhp, 525 nm.

Top speed: 176 mph/ 283 kmh.

0-60: 5.8 seconds.

Length: 4220 mm / 166.1 in.

Width: 1835 mm / 72.2 in.

Height: 1135 mm / 44.7 in.

Weight: 1350 kg / 2976 lb

Transmission: 5 speed Manual.

Parts: Gullwing doors, a rear view periscope in place of side mirrors. Double wishbone suspention.

Tires: Street legal sports tires.

My take On this: In a fit of finding something out of place (and over exaggerated), i had to decide on this than the Spada Codatronca, the Mitsuoka Orochi, the W Lykan Hypersports (on the rise with TopGear making it's review), the Wiegert Vector, the Giugiaro Brivido and the Genty Akylone.

But i think this is cooler. Why? If it's trying to compete with the legendary Countach.. yeah.

The Benz Patent Motorwagen aka the first car.

I'm always confused on what was the actual first car. A lot of us like to think that it's Benz Patent-Motorwagen, but that's more like the first petrol-engined car, I believe. (I'm not sure if there were petrol-engined automobiles before it) There were steam-engined cars before it, like the 1884 De Dion-Bouton Et Trepardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout.

2013+ TAGAZ Aquila (PS511)
tagaz_aquila_1280x1024.jpg

Engine: Mitsubishi 1584cc I4 107 hp, 138 Nm
(150 hp version coming December 2014)
Transmission: 5-speed manual or auto (coming), front wheel drive
Length: 4683 mm
Width: 1824 mm
Height: 1388 mm
Curb weight: 1410 kg
I think it's the first really good production car made in this country after the collapse of the Evil Empire (Marussia B1 & B2 don't count). Introduced in 2011, but the production started two years later. A successful project, but it's possibly about to fail: TagAZ company is now a bankrupt. However, the Aquila is still in production, slowly but sure. There are around 50 of them made for now, so it's a real rarity (there are some in Moscow, but I've never seen one in person yet). The project PS511 is possibly the only chance for TagAZ to survive.

As you may have noticed, there was no CW post yesterday. This is because I kind of forgot until I was almost in bed. Probably has something to do with me not getting enough sleep over the past few weeks.

As a result, we will now have polls on two days in a row. Hopefully this won't throw everything off like the last schedule disruption.
