Nothing to be afraid of... You just have to expect what's coming for ya.

What is to be afraid of, is shooting a 70-90+ year old bolt action, and fearing that you're gonna lose your eye when the bolt slams backwards..

I've shot guns from 1888, and original muzzle loaders from 1700's. I regularly shoot a rifle from 1908 with great success.
I'd not hesitate to shoot A6m5's Arisaka, those guns are known for being built silly strong. I'd check the bore if there are any obstructions or any stress marks on the receiver. If all looks good I'd fire it and it would not be dangerous in the slightest, especially with this gun.

Its that time of the year again, today my shooting range closed for winter break, still managed to shoot a couple of good groups though. 100 meters, 5 shots, scope at 7x magnification, my own handloads.
This includes the cold bore shot!

Mine's got rust too(it was gifted to me), but that's really cool to know. 👍
A little bit of surface pitting wouldn't hurt the integrity of the barrel. Arisakas are know to have bad barrels since a lot of them were used by Japanese troops in the Guadalcanal and Midway campaigns, and that area mainly consist of damp jungle terrain with lots of salty sea water in the air.

You'd just have to make sure the bore diameter is not smaller than it used to be due to the rust buildup, that could behave like a bore obstruction and create pressure spikes which would be bad.
Soak the barrel in oil, let it sit for a day or two and then use a brass bore brush to remove the loose material inside the barrel.

Any particular pattern to where they land, like higher, or lower that you noticed? Probably unpredictable, but I was just wondering. That's really great shooting there Michael!

It's their "last ditch" model, so it got some crude craftsmanship, too. I still can't really entertain the idea of trying to shoot that thing, but thank you very much for info and the valuable tips. Much appreciated. :)👍

Thank you! Usually cold bore shots print low - after the first shot powder residue in the bore is acting against the bullet in the follow up shots, and if you increase resistance pressure goes up which will result in a bit more velocity and a little less bullet drop.
However, for some reason my rifle with my hand loads prints the first and the next two shots exactly in the middle of the target, with 100% reliability. Don't know why or how but I love it. :dopey:

Just remember the Arisaka is considered the strongest bolt action ever made, it even beats the Mauser 98! They can take serious abuse:

You must be compensating for that first shot, because of what you already know! j/k

That was an awesome video. Even the comments were great.

You sick ****s, starving children in Africa could have eaten that gun, but you wasted it

👍

However, I have dry fired the thing quite a few times. The Geissele Lightning Trigger Bow makes a tremendous difference. After seeing their trigger bow and the factory one, it makes sense why the factory one was so sloppy with the Geissele trigger pack. Now all there is left to do is take the rifle to the range.

I made a trip to the range on Friday afternoon. I did really well with the first magazine. After the first magazine, I then proceeded to start stinking up the place. I was on target much of the time, but not nearly as often as I would like to be. I really need to make an effort to go out more often.

Same here. I think it's hard to be a noobie & then expect to have a quality session going shooting for the second time in a year or something like that(personally speaking).

It had been nearly four months since I had last been out to the range. That is much too long. I really need to make a better effort to go out there more often.

Yeah, we both invested time & money into this hobby, so might as well. :D

I just found pics of an astonishingly beautiful Holland & Holland blackpowder cartridge double rifle from 1888. IMO double barrels are the sexiest and most fascinating guns in the world of firearms.
Caliber around 23mm. (.90''), bullet weight around 1400 grains. Almost twice the weight of a .50 BMG projectile.

Been talking about this gun at work. One of the kids there bought the 9mm. Good looking gun.

Man, Hickok can really shoot those pistols!

A co-worker, a friend, and I went Friday afternoon. It was on the cooler side temperature wise. In the shade, it was cold and in the sun, it was not too bad. Unfortunately, all the shooting positions are covered.

I really need to go more often. I pretty much stunk it up again. However, I was able to get the Aimpoint on my Tavor dialed in better. It still need a touch more work, but it much more close to where it needs to be zeroed.

I really stunk it up with a pistol. That is what happens when you have not shot one in some time!

Yesterday I shot a friends PA-63 in 9mm MAK. Thats pretty much a Walther clone in the 9mm Makarov round.
I have VEEERY limited experience with pistols but when I shot this one the holes were touching at 15 meters! I thought I missed entirely but when I walked to the target I was totally surprised to find a group I could cover with my thumb.
 I had no idea tiny pocket pistols could be that accurate, fun and comfortable to shoot.

Thats one:

It had very little recoil, was fast to shoot, ridiculously accurate, it felt surprisingly solid in my hands and the trigger was excellent. The sights were tiny but ok, the size of the entire thing just about right.
My only 9mm pistol comparison is a Glock 17, and this Walther clone felt way better in every way possible.

I had a really hard time giving that lovely little pistol back to its owner, he already gave me the evil eye. Maybe I'll get one in the future, but pistols need a lot of paperwork around here.

View media item 11301This is what I picked up this week. Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag... Now
That thing is a beauty, I applaud your taste in firearms.

Is 9x18 comparable to 9x19 in terms of price? I would think it would be more expensive but I haven't had a chance to look. There's a lot of guns I like in 9x18 but I'm unsure about the ammo costs.

I wish I had the money for these, or that they were cheaper:

Some of you may have seen one on certain magazine cover this month. If I didn't already have rarely shot Ruger SR22, I would have considered this one, even with the price tag. Eye. Candy. And Browning.

Bought a BCG for my AR last night. Ended up going with a nickel boron one, hopefully I won't regret that decision. Still need a carry and charging handle. Just waiting till Palmetto State Armory gets them both back in stock.

Thats Moss Pawn and Gun down here in Atlanta. Sadly Larry is no longer here, which is a big reason i started watching them.

If i ever get a scope for my mosin or mauser thats where im taking it to get milled.

So it's SHOT Show.

I can finally go get a Walther...

edit: God damnit. I just read that the mag release is not interchangeable or ambidextrous. Wtf, Walther.

I'm left handed. Once you adapt to everything being right handed on guns, it's not that big of a deal. A standard AR selector switch is probably the worst thing but everything else is ok.

Yeah but if you're right handed but left-eye dominant like myself that's where it starts to suck... The only thing I have a slight advantage of is bolt action rifles like my Mauser and Nagant I own..

 @Omnis I don't think you actually want to ever buy a gun.

Just shoot right-handed like a normal left-handed person!

It's been a tough sell for me because my aunt has like a bazillion guns and I usually go shooting with her anyway. Waiting for that perfect peach that ticks all the boxes.

But now that apex has a trigger kit for the PPQ I may just get one anyway. Just probably wouldn't carry it.

I know nothing about building AR, but that's pretty reasonable, right? Congrats! 👍

I don't think I saved that much compared to buying one pre assembled. Maybe $50-75. I wanted a pretty basic AR. Pretty much the only thing that sets it apart is the nickel boron BCG.

Building it myself was just a personal goal of mine. I've always wanted an AR and after I started researching them I thought it'd be fun to build one.

Now I want to build another. :)
