I've seen them advertised, but not familiar with these civilian M4s? They are semi-autos, obviously, but are they any different than other AR-15 variants out there?

My buddy has a Benellis(I think it's called Nova), and I don't like how it kicks, but the action's amazing. My 870 has pistol grip stock w/recoil reduction, Benelli is the standard rifle style stock.

As for the noise discussion, I know that rifles in the 30-caliber range & 12-gauge makes the louder boom, but I'm not really experienced.

Edit: I think I really want this.

Left is 2.5" barrel & right is 3". S&W 686(.357 Magnum). For carry. I've yet to check one out though. Might go for U.S. Citizenship first.

It's not the M4 Carbine, it's a Benelli M4 Tactical shotgun. Semi-auto, gas powered. It's supposed to have super low recoil.

It's the civilian version of the Benelli M1014 the Marines use.

I'm curious.

For the more experienced shooters on here: What guns have you shot that were disportionately loud/quiet? (I.E. a handgun with a massive boom or a rifle with a small pop)
.270 for me seems louder than what it should. I've shot .308, .338, .400 win mag, .50s and huge muskets, but damn does .270 seem loud.

The loudest gun I have ever fired was a double barrel shotgun with hot 12 gauge loads. I've been told that because of the relatively low pressure shotguns create the noise isn't so bad but I shot it outdoors with no ear muffs and it nearly blew my eardrums out. Instead of a loud BOOOM like you get with rifle it made an extremely sharp crack sound like getting slapped onto your ears with a phone book really hard. Very uncomfortable, I couldn't hear much for the rest of the day.

I've also shot a K98k Mauser with hot 8x57IS at an outdoor range with no ear protection and this rifle was nowhere near as loud as the shotgun. Yes, it made my ears ring a little bit but the report was not sharp, it was a BOOM sound like from a cannon. You can shoot that one for a while without going completely deaf.

I also had the questionable honor of having a gun go off only couple of steps next to me, which was a 357 mag revolver. No ear protection, it made my ears ring and everything sounded like underwater for a couple of minutes but again it was nowhere near as bad as the shotgun.

These experiences come from a time when I wasn't as worried about my hearing as I am now. Fortunately I started to use good ear protection before losing a good deal of my hearing abilities. I do not suffer from any hearing loss, thank the gods.

Always use ear protection, even when shooting firearms outdoors.

Really like the electronic ear muffs, so you can hear everything around you. Unfortunately, my dumbo-ears suck with the model I have:

It's Howard Leight Impact Sport. Anybody know of electronic ear muff with large(r) ear cups? Long shot, I know. I've looked!
Lol!!!! Benelli makes an M3 tactical shotgun too, those look really interesting as well. It can switch between gas or pump action. That's pretty sweet, it's a little cheaper at around $1,500 new.
I didn't even know that there was such a shotgun that can alternate between pump or semi. Man, back to M4. For couple of grand, you could buy a nice shotgun & a nice AR, but that thing looks amazing. My only gripe with it would be the capacity. If it at least had 6+1, that would've been acceptable , personally. I wouldn't try to talk you out of it though. Military shotgun, Benelli & looks super high quality. 👍

That's what I was saying in my original post, you can get ammo extension tubes for it, but you'd have to make sure it was legal first. There's a law that an imported semi-auto shotgun, has to be modified with at least 3 American parts to legally increase the ammo capacity(ammo tube counts as one so you only need two more). There's a list of parts that are acceptable, so it doesn't look like that big of a deal. Most the extender tubes I've seen are for 2 shells, which would bump it up to 7, so that's not bad at all. 5 really isn't that bad, because you can ghost load a shell. So it's actually 6.

It's a really silly law. It's explained in here.

Edit: there's some confusion on the ammo extender too, that article says it doesn't count as one of the three parts, but I've read on other sites it does.

I thought I read it, but missed the part about how it was mandatory. M4 seems to be perfect just how they come. How frustrating.

I ask the question because I've read that 9MM is louder through a rifle than a handgun.

It might have to do with the close proximity to your ears when you fire a rifle as your head if right beside the gun than a handgun which would be further away from your head and ears.

It should be quite the opposite, rifles operate at MUCH higher pressures, also much more powder is used which is the main factor of muzzle report. Also, the sound comes out of the muzzle only.

.22 sounds about as loud as my little brothers Red Rider, depending on the brand of ammo. .223 isn't all that loud, when I first shot it. AK-47 is quite loud the few times I shot it. .308 equally loud. .17 cal is somewhat loud. 30-06 is loud. I mean in range for most quiet to most loud I've shot, I'd put .22 at the bottom and .308 and .40 at the top.

Yeah they're actually really easy to shoot, well the Super that I shot was. Which is probably one of the reasons why they're a widely used in 3 gun competition.

I think I'm going this weekend to see about ordering one. It's a bunch of money, but man I really want one. I've been doing a bunch of research on accessories for them. I don't want to put a bunch of stuff on it, just a few things to keep it simple, but customize it just a bit to my liking.

I was reading a thread last night where a guy customized one heavily, he would post several pictures each time and show how to do it. He also kept a tab on his prices, he had over $3500 of accessories on a $1800 gun. That's a little over the top.

Yeah it reminds me of the ar-15 of the shotgun category, you wont go wrong with the gun. But it is a nice bit of coin. Good luck.

Me assembling the M4, the instructions weren't that great, so I used a YouTube video to assist as well. Pretty easy to put together really, it's tooless. It will be a breeze to disassemble and clean now that I know how.

Fully assembled.

In my expensive Pelican stormproof case, I'm glad I bought it though.

Some of the accessories and ammo I bought on top of the case. I will shoot it tomorrow and see how much fun I have. :)

Wow. Congrats. 👍 Don't forget to pick up some 12-gauge slugs, too. :D

Edit: WTF

You guys try it first. :D

What the heck? That was strange.

My cousin, that happens to live next door, just bought a Black Rain Spec15 AR15 last week. So I'm going up there with my Benelli tomorrow afternoon, and we are going to shoot a bunch.

I shot 50 shells of target load through my M4 today(didn't take very long at all), and that gun is so bad ass. I had 3 shells that didn't eject properly, but I just had to pull the bolt back and cycle manually. This won't happen once I've broken the gun in a little more. They were only target loads, but there was very little recoil.

I've been looking at accessories for it, and I don't think I want to change the appearance of it too drastically. I will get a extension tube eventually, but even that isn't a must have. I've seen some on the internet that are heavily modified, and they almost look cheesy.

What on earth?
They're making fun of a Facebook comment which said essentially "If you don't understand the forward assist, you don't know how to run the rifle". When in fact, as he points out, the forward assist is a pointless add on. And the dragging the junker through the dirt was poking fun at the "run your rifle"thing. xD

Awesome! Enjoy that thing! I want one, but the price tag is more than I want to spend. Good decision on buying what you actually want and not settling on something less. I did it with my Tavor and am still mostly happy about that decision. If I would stop messing around and just build an AR, then that mostly happy would go away and I would have two nice rifles.

Interesting product. Price is a bit too steep.

That was a good video. I really need to watch more of their stuff.

It looks gorgeous!

Guys from another department at work went shooting over the weekend. My friend was one of them & while I didn't mind that they didn't invite me, last week, after seeing this video, I am now annoyed! j/k

*language warning*

Look above the explosion, right past 20 second mark I think. It's a fire extinguisher. Edit: You have to watch it in full screen. Also, this video is bit grainier than the original, so it's little hard to see. Sorry. It's easier to see it on its way down though. :D

If it works, I think $200 would be okay. If it's a gimmick, it's a overpriced one. :D
